Upper dwellings now closed to visits. The guided hikes are still going on but you hike to the front of the dwellings and look at them, you cannot go through them.

We enjoyed this guided hike. We had done a few hikes in recent weeks just assure ourselves that we wouldn't hold the group back and Yay! We did not embarrass ourselves. Ranger Katie B. was our guide and she made sure everyone was able to keep up and had plenty of details about the history of the dwellings. We had enough ambition left after the Upper Dwellings to tackle the Lower Dwellings too. Being later in the day and a little warmer this was almost too much but we made it up.

I've driven by the Tonto National Monument many times, but never stopped in for a visit--until today. Earlier this week, I called to see if there were any last-minute openings for the guided tour to the upper dwelling. They only do the tours November to April and only on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. And only 10 spots per day. While they are generally booked solid, they had a few last-minute cancellations, so we snuck in. Ended up being only 6 of us on the tour.

The tour guide was very knowledgeable and we definitely took our time getting up to the ruin, with numerous stops along the way. The ruin itself is impressive, and we got a fairly up close and personal tour. The Woodbury fire burned all through the area, but a lot of effort was made to preserve the ruins.

On the way back to the visitor center, we decided to go up to the lower ruins as well (which don't require any permit and no limit on visitation). The lower ruins are also impressive.

It was a beautiful day, and this is a gem definitely worth a visit.

I had been wanting to do the Upper Ruins for almost a decade now after having visited the lower ruins. SCA, Henry, Jan, and Yolanda joined me for this trip. TNM now charges an entry fee, so be sure to bring your National Park Pass if you have one. I had to make this reservation 5 weeks out to get in and lucky we did as this is the last weekend of the season for the ranger led tours to the upper ruins. We had 14 total in our group not including the two rangers. The trek stops on a regular basis on the way to the ruins to allow the non-hardcore hikers a chance to catch up and take a breather. There's a spring that runs year round that you get to walk through, which on our trip, was a gauntlet of flying insects. Keep your head down and you'll be through in no time :) At a break after the spring, enjoying the shade of the sycamore trees and a ranger story, I spotted a snake, in a tree no less. Since when did they start putting snakes in trees? It's bad enough I have to look for them under my feet, but above my head, that's just not fair! Anyway, the group checked out my easter egg discovery and we continued up the switchbacks to the ruins. Much of the ruins are now off limits to tours due to stabilization issues and may reopen in the future once some restoration has been completed. The views and ranger stories were excellent, my group all enjoyed our visit to this hidden gem.

You usually need reservations to see the Upper Dwelling. It seems whenever I have a chance it is booked up. This time I called and it was booked for Friday but the Ranger told me Heritage weekend you don't need a reservation so I was in. Wally and I were at the lower dwelling when we heard on the Ranger radio that they opened the Upper one a half hour early. Cars were starting to roll in so we heading over. Wally passed everyone so we managed to hit both dwellings first. Not a big deal but it helps if you want photos without people in them. Cool ruin and a few more Metates here as well. The Rangers here were nice and informative. The views are very nice from here. At the trailhead there was a few booths set up that were cool. One guy showed us how to start a fire with string stick and bark. He did it pretty quick too. I saw Wally do it with vasoline and steel wool in the snow one time that was pretty cool too! The next booth was Indian stuff. I never knew they used such small arrowheads. Other Indian tools were cool too. Next booth pelts. Wally new them all :) :app: . The last booth we checked out was a few snakes and a healthy Gila Monster. The Western Diamond Back they had must have been twice as wide as any I have ever seen. He said it was 5 and a half feet long also. Only saw the end button the way he was laying but it was huge too. Checked out the little Museum before we left. Interesting seeing the different styles. Afterwords we got to Big Daddy's Pizza at 10:55. They open at 11am....... on Tuesday! ](*,) This hike is in the 60HIKES book so I'm down to 4 to go! Thanks Wally! :y:

After a quiet night in camp, we enjoyed a hearty breakfast at Butcher Hook and then eased over to the Tonto Monument to start our second day of a run to Roosevelt Lake and the Sierra Anchas.

The only way to visit the upper cliff dwellings is to take a ranger guided tour. Our group was about 9 folks. The hike up is fairly easy with lots of stops for the ranger to explain how the Salados used the environment to live here. The upper ruins are fairly well preserved. Enjoyed seeing some of the artifacts they have found in the ruins -- 600 year old corn cobs and squash stems were pretty cool.

1st Time to the Monument. A Tour was getting ready to go so I jumped on the Opportunity against my Better Judgement...Nothing New there, I've been stupid most of the last 10 Days actually.... ;) Pretty Slow on the Downhill, tweaking things a few times... :? Nothing new there either... The Upper Ruin is pretty Cool... Next Weekend is their last Tour of the Season. Still haven't seen the Lower Ruin as I had to book it back to Phoenix to return a bunch of Rental PFDs....

Surprised that we don't show the Spring in there, it's a Perennial One with Year-Round Flow in Cave Canyon. They have a Spigot at the TH where you can fill your Bottles with the Spring Water...Tasted Fine and it was Cold.... :)

Home now for awhile I think.... ;)

Finally, I booked a spot on the guided hike to the Upper Ruins. It's a very easy hike with spectacular scenery.

From Campsite 20 I followed the trail to a nice bench facing east where you can watch the sunrise if you wake up it odark30 (I was a little late). Then down some "stairs". I walked out through reeds to the lake. Saw some areas in the reeds where mule deer must have bedded down. Either mule deer or some really large redneck beer drinkers. Touched the Roosevelt Lake Water and headed back up to wake my fellow campers #slackers

I had a unique opportunity so I took it. The Temple Chai Mens' Club was having a camping trip to Windy Hill campground for Lag B'Omer with our Rabbi Jake Singer-Beilin. I called and got a spot on the hike to the Upper Campgrounds. Ranger Janet Lemon really grilled me to see if I could hike 3 1/2 miles and 750' AEG - glad I could still pass the interrogation.

Arrived at 0930 and checked in. Went to the Ramada and waited. Seven people in our group - a Dad, Mom and two teenage girls from Highland HS and a mid-70's couple from Liverpool. You could sort of tell they were European by their polished leather hiking boots. We waited for some no shows and departed at 1010. Led by Volunteer "Ranger" Wil Moore from Mesa. I asked and he is not related to Les Moore from Tombstone. Tomorrow is the last hike of the season. They close it down for summer. Wil stopped often to explain history and botany. We had a nice give and take and I learned a few things. I love a hike when I learn something. I can now tell a male jojoba plant from a female jojoba plant.

The cliff dwellings are well preserved. Great to have details pointed out and explained.

Wil told me that around St. Patrick's day the Monument has an "Open hike" day. For that weekend you can hike in anytime from park opening to closing without the guided tour. And he told me that there are special "photography" tours run by a professional photographer at various times during the season for a nominal $3 per person fee.

After the Upper hike I went to the lower Cliff Dwellings. The Lower Hike is actually more cardio - or maybe I pushed it harder.

After the Lower Ruins I went to Windy Hill campground to scout and secure a spot for our Mens' Group camping trip.

Went with a group of friends who wanted to see Upper Ruin and be leisurely. So we went on the open day. It was busy but not a zoo. Perhaps 10 others at the ruin while we were there and perhaps 20 or so on the trail each way.

Did the Upper Dwellings today at the Tonto National Monument. Really cool and a perfect day for it. Next weekend it's free and does not require a tour guide but will most likely be a zoo.

Had a nice hike to the Upper Cliff Dwelling. The park ranger did an excellent job leading the way. There was a good blend of information and hiking. The ruins are definitely worth seeing. Got a bunch of good pics and there were plenty of wild flowers along the hike. I would definitely recommend this hike...especially if you have family coming to town to visit. Great place to take them! Remember you have to call to make a reservation for the upper.
