Hiked Long Canyon Trail to the Birthing Cave with Margaret and Joe.

This was the last hike of our Sedona Trip which was a quick hike up Long Canyon to the Birthing Cave. The trail was not as busy as usual (the advantage of hiking during a weekday). When we got to the cave we effectively had it to ourselves (which was great for photos). As with the earlier hikes, Margaret and Joe were skittish on the slick rock and did not venture into the cave very far to get photos. I did manage to get a good shot of them from the ledge on the back wall which was pretty cool.

As usual a great, easy Sedona hike.

Drove up from Tempe at 4am on 3 hours of sleep with plans for a big day. Wound up doing Boynton, Fay, and Long Canyons all in one day before driving back home. Combined triplog here.

Boynton - full trail plus Subway - 7.89mi, 1296ft AEG, 2:10 elapsed
Reached Boynton trailhead at 7am about 30 min before sunrise. There were around a dozen cars there already, the lot about half full.
The beginning of the trail by the resort is quite "urban" :( In the interest of time I planned to jog as much of the day as possible where the trails allowed (first ultra is in 1 month!), and managed to overtake everyone else on the trail and reach the subway first so I had it to myself briefly. The turnoff to the subway is almost impossible to miss with how much traffic goes there, but I did encounter a few people later in the full trail who had missed it.
The subway ramp was steeper than I expected. I shimmied up the right-most side. Coming back down I took a far easier path that you would find to the left of the ramp, through a branched archway, that takes you right up to the ruins alcove. I would recommend using that unless you want the challenge of the ramp. Coming back to the main trail, it was easy to take a wrong turn a couple times.
I knew there were other ruins in Boyntonn but ran out of time trying to internet sleuth all my destinations before driving up, and hoped they would be a little more obvious in Boynton. Unfortunately I didn't manage to spot the others, so I plan to go back eventually.
The rest of the trail was pleasant forest trail but not particularly dramatic. The strong smell of pine was wonderful. Upon reaching the end, I once again hoped to spy some ruins from the vantage point but had no luck. Upon returning to the trailhead it was a total zoo. I would guess 200 cars up and down the street spilling out of the lot, people getting dropped at the trailhead, etc. I didn't know yet that you could park along the street, and didn't want to risk getting shut out of Fay parking and losing any spot at all, so I left my car at Boynton and after a pit stop jogged down to Fay with just my tripod in hand.

Fay Canyon - 5.42mi, 909ft AEG, 2:08 elapsed
Fay began with wide, gentle dirt paths. The turnoff to the arch is again quite obvious. I worked my way up beneath the arch for some photo ops. The arch is separated from the cliff, but the gap is narrow so it's difficult to see that from most angles. For that reason I found the pictures better from underneath the arch than on top of it. To get to the top you'll aim to ascend the slope to the right/south of the arch. I followed a well defined path going up and to the right, but it had quite a lot of prickly pear, and a spot or two that narrowed and required some attention to footing. Coming down I tried an alternate path down a rock fall. It had no exposure and no cacti, just lots of large rocks which made a little slower going, so I'd rate the paths about equal. When I reached the bottom a stranger asked if I drove a particular car. They had been at Boynton and saw me go to my car and were hoping to get my spot when they saw me jog off, so they gave up and went to Fay instead. They were good sports about it.
I returned to the main trail and headed up to the fork. I knew ruins would be on the right fork, but didn't know exactly where. I went up the wash and some areas that looked fairly well traveled, and saw plenty of footprints. I went a ways up and down the right fork twice and still found nothing, but the foliage was dense and made it hard to see much. Skipping between rocks in the wash, I managed to roll my ankle fairly hard, but fortunately it didn't catch up with me until the drive home stiffened me up. Gave up looking for the Fay ruins, but at the next canyon received a tip from a traveler about where to find them when I go back.

Long Canyon - 9.12mi, 1385ft AEG, 3:24 elapsed
The whole area was crawling with people by this point, so I parked at the Mescal trailhead and didn't bother going down to check Long Canyon trailhead. Mescal was full, but I was lucky to get a spot from someone leaving. I jogged to the large nexus intersection and briefly took a wrong turn left which I believe heads to the Birthing Cave which I didn't really have interest in.
I reached "butt rock" a couple miles in, and continued up Long trail for now according to plan. After another mile or two, I reached my first point of interest. At a rocky wash with a large pine, there was a small but fairly clear path leading off to the left and switchbacking uphill. Here the path became quite steep, but the section is short. After just a few moments you should see the ladder come into view. Reaching a fork, I headed left first, to a nice Hohokam dwelling. This one may be have been restored at some point, but it was cool nonetheless. I worked my way back to the fork and up the other direction toward the ladder and another small ruin next to it. I shimmied into a small cave behind the ladder for some photo ops.
I did not intend to go further up Long trail, so I headed back to "butt rock" and turned east this time, following a well traveled path. I was glad to encounter a couple other travelers for this stretch which involved a couple small rocky scrambles. The goal is the opening between the ice cream cone rock on the left, and the 3 sisters formation to the right. The ruins were neat, I found it difficult to get a photo angle that showed them off well, they look better in person :) Heading back down solo, I did have to search a few minutes to find the right spot back down over the long ledge.

I changed into clothes that didn't smell bad for the drive home and enjoyed the most overpriced but delicious quarter pounder with cheese in as long as I can remember.

Hiked Long Canyon trail #122 in Sedona with Dad, Margaret, and Victoria.

This was the last day of our Holiday Sedona trip and our first time on this particular trail. We picked this trail as the first of the day with the intent to hike to the "Birthing Cave" it is one of the easier hikes in the area (selected so Dad could participate)

Dad had no trouble with the majority of the trail (he had a trekking pole) but did not do the final ascent to the cave itself (it was too steep for him).

The trail itself was pretty straightforward navigation-wise but not terribly exciting as far as views go. It really is all about the destination: Birthing Cave. We arrived early enough that the crowds were not bad (although there were a fair number hanging out at the cave taking pictures). This was the one truly scenic location. The view from the cave floor is good but scrambling up the back wall of the cave will take you to a thin ledge that gives a phenomenal view: [ youtube video ] . This alone made the hike well worth it.

There are a variety of caves and arches in this area that we have still yet to visit. We will have to come back for the less mainstream ones.

We wanted to escape the heat in the valley, so my grandsons joined me for a few days of hiking in the Sedona area. We were up by 5 a.m. and reached our trailheads by 6 to begin our hikes except for Soldiers Pass. The parking area there was closed until 8 a.m. That made it extremely hot finishing up. I didn't understand why so late to open the gate (remotely) but managed to survive the 103 degree finish. I recommend this beautiful area to everyone as I met many great people along the way from all over the states and some Europeans as well.

Last vacation day, lead to an early morning hike in Sedona. I’ve done quite a few trails in the area, but have never gotten around to Long Canyon. To be honest, the start has never impressed me so it hadn’t been that high on my list. Just as you should never judge a book by its cover, you should never judge a trail by its opening leg. Loved this trail!

Got on the trail around 5:30am. Once again, the opening doesn’t impress. The trail starts out unimaginative, flat and sandy and though it allows for great distant views the simplicity of the trail detracts from the initial hike. About a mile in I hit the wilderness boundary. The trail is still pretty “vanilla”, but the distant views are getting closer and I could start to appreciate some potential beauty that this trail holds. At this point the trail is going through a well manicured manzanita jungle, sprinkled with a variety of pines. As the trail moves deeper into the canyon it transitions quickly to pines and oak being the dominate foliage. At first, there seems to be minimal ground cover, but the more I continued on the trail the more the greenery encroached on the trail. This encroaching ground coverage was mere distraction as the trail was still easy to follow and MOST of the greenery was NOT poison ivy. The really treat were the teasing glimpses that I got of the canyon walls. Beautiful! The way the whites, red and pinks intermingled with vibrant green of the trees and shrubs that seem to sprout from multiple crevices and ledges. At times I felt like I was viewing a giant chia pet. There appeared to be one potential side trail about 2 miles in that took off to the right, maybe leading to one of ruins talked about in other write ups. Otherwise the trail was a simple track to follow. A little over 2.5 miles in the trail did a switchback, climbing a hill and then dropping down and crossing a dry wash. This is where the canyon splits and the trail follows a more northern route. (At this point I start thinking about future visits and potential places to leave the trail and try for that connection to Secret Mountain or possibly, further up the trail, connecting to Secret Canyon). The trail starts to become a little more rugged and the undergrowth more thick, but still very passable. Shortly thereafter, came to the one brief spot where the red rock actually plays with the trail. I’m pretty sure this is the spot where Joe scrambled above the lip of the overhang to get his “money shots”. It was evident that others had done so as well, as there were a couple of user trails spider-webbing up the left side of the overhang. (I did this on my way back and the views are worth the scramble). :) The trail continues on, climbing a little but still shadowing the wash. There were some downed trees that had to be negotiated, but they had been down for awhile as there were user paths going around them. I turned around at just over 4 miles, according to my Garmin. Off to the right of the trail, there was a large wooden post coming out of the ground (no signage). The trail continued on, becoming even more rugged, climbing a steep hill. Not sure how much further the trail continued on, but I imagine it becomes more faint as it goes on. Love to know how much further it would be to Secret Canyon….looks like it would intersect with Secret Canyon around the 4.4 mile mark on that trail. Love to come back and find out :D No wildlife, except for a few rabbits. Bird life was nice, though it was more the sounds than sightings. Bug irritation was minor, unless I stood still for any length of time. Didn’t see anyone until I got back to Deadman’s Pass. Definitely worth another trip!

I needed to take care of some business in Sedona and asked Greg if he'd like to come along and we could do this hike. Google took us on a short cut from Cornville Rd (off of I-17) the back way via Page Springs which is a windy/narrow connector to 89A but it was fun to go through an area I've never seen before.

We got to the TH but it wasn't the TH I thot. It is brand new so we had to do a little investigating before heading on our way. The mountain was to the north of the TH so it was just a matter of how to hook up with the trail to take us around the mountain. Once we figured that out, we more or less waited to reach a junction to take us west that never came as we were on the Mescal Trail from the get-go.

There was lots of Goodding's Verbena from the start and it's not one of my favorite smells so I was glad when the bulk of that ended. It's sure pretty to look at though and we saw lots of FeatherPlume too (feather dalea). The views to the north toward Maroon Mountain area is very pretty as you make your way west to the flank of Mescal Mountain. As we got closer to Mescal Mountain, Greg spotted a cave so that kept our attention for a bit. On my zoon into the cave, I saw a rope which I didn't see while taking the picture.

By this time you have nice views to the south of Thunder Mountain and to the west of Doe Mountain. I decided to do some filming today as I haven't been doing much of that with my city hiking. This is a pretty area for sure altho it does look dry to me. The amount of ocotillo you see on this southwest side is surprising. I did get a Common Ear Lizard to do some posing for me so I got some good pictures. We would encounter several bike riders and other hikers including a couple from Michigan that we would hike with for a bit.

My favorite part of this hike is rounding the corner with the view toward Boynton Canyon. This area of the mountain is nice as well. The light seemed a little harsh today so the photos weren't that good; however, the movies are fine. We encountered a few hikers at the base of Deadman's Pass Trail that I thot was a hill but it's really not. When I first hiked it in 2017, I was with Kelly and maybe her pace made me think it was a hill  . So that went better than I hoped. From there it was a cruise down the Long Canyon Trail where we saw quite a few more hikers; some inquired whether we had been to the Birthing Cave.

As we were going down the trail I thot we should be over to the right (west) more and that was indeed the case as at the end of the Long Canyon Trail at the paved road, there is a connector that takes you back over toward Mescal Trail. I had forgotten about that junction sign on our way up as I can't remember using that connector before when Mia and I did this hike counterclockwise in 2019.

I like the hike from this new TH. There seems to be ample parking as they also have lined parking on the road. However, this TH is also used for access to the trail for Devil's Bridge. Oh, and FYI, driving by Dry Creek Road was loaded with cars on a Wednesday morning.

We had lunch at Stagecoach Sedona which replaced the Olde Sedona Bar and Grill where I've eaten a couple times. My excerpt from last May's trip report: "and we had a great dinner. The reason I'm telling you about Olde Sedona is they have a Homestyle Chicken dinner like no other and we were quite surprised and delighted." Well they completely renovated the place so I was pretty shocked. They did a fabulous job (see photo) and we did enjoy our food so I would recommend it; altho the prices are obviously a little higher now.

tons of Goodings Verbena and Featherplume (Feather Dalea) and in some areas, Blackfoot Daisy. The Banana Yuccas and Century Plants were just starting to bloom. One area along Long Trail had Evening Primrose.

So, I got a call. Angela had some business matters to attend to in Sedona and asked if I wanted to tag along and do a short hike on short notice. I agreed and she swung by and picked me up. The smoke from the Crooks Fire was hanging low the entire ride up I-17. Once we were north of the Verde Valley it lifted somewhat which was good.

We took a southern route to 89A through Page Springs. We saw some really nice riparian areas there that warrant another visit in the future. There was a large fish hatchery along with a birding area with walking trails. The icing on the cake was several winerys with tasting rooms. We almost never made it to Sedona.

The hike we did was one Angela had done variants of a couple of times prior. Basically it was just a CW loop around Mescal Mountain. Quite by accident we started from the brand spankin' new Mescal Trailhead as opposed to the Boynton TH she had used previously. It was very nice and the bathrooms had that never been used look so we remedied that.

The weather was warm but not hot thanks to a steady breeze. Towards the end of the hike it was hold on to your hat and red dust everywhere! We finished just in time for a great BBQ pork lunch at a new restaurant downtown. I tried deep fried pickles for the first time and they were really good. Thanks for the invite Angela. It was a pretty hike and it's always nice to get out of town as the oven warms up down here.

Verbena was by far the star of the day with it's electric blue colors lining the trails.

There was snow in the forecast for Sedona, so a girls day was in order! The forecast was holding strong for snow, until early early that morning, it had adjusted a bit. Typical Arizona

We met at Long Canyon TH at 7:30am and started our hike. There were a few other vehicles already there, but it seemed they were all headed for the Birthing Cave since we saw no one throughout our hike! We had mapped out a few options of certain ruins and decided to just proceed according to the weather. We were properly layered for the cold.

We headed off trail at our pin and headed up to see the Three Sisters aka Ice Cream Cone ruins. I had been before about 3 years ago and back then there was no trail and you had to climb straight up a cliff face. Oh how things have changed as now there is somewhat of a path through the trees that avoids the sketchy vertical climb. It wasn’t snowing, but there was some icy rain/sleet as we gained elevation. Despite there being some sort of a path, it was still pretty sketchy climbing up as you’re grabbing onto icy tree limbs and slick rocks. We took our time and chose footing carefully and made it to the top without any issues.

My friend hadn’t ever seen the dwellings so I was excited for her to see them and we also took a snack break there. It was about 20 degrees colder up there, so all extra layers were on. There was a lot of fog so the ruins were a bit challenging to capture. After we had our fill, we returned the same way we came and the icy rain continued throughout our descent.

Once back on the main trail, we were feeling a bit over the slushy rain (it feels a lot different than fluffy snow!) so we decided to not visit any additional ruins in that canyon. It wasn’t exactly the day we had planned, but still had a great time hiking in Sedona!

Nice day after some overnite rain. North from Mescal TH then up Boynton to the very cool subway cave, then Deadmans over to Long and up to the end and back. Boynton was packed, Long was much quieter.

My bike buddies Carey and Dan joined me in Sedona to ride this excellent loop. I was surprised to find parking available at the Mescal trailhead at 9am, but it was a Thursday. I can tell you that there is currently construction going on along Dry Creek road near Devil's Bridge - the shoulder is being closed to parking south of the turnoff to the Devil's Bridge trailhead. We rode Mescal north to Canyon of Fools, Dawa, Aerie, Deadmans Pass, Long Canyon, and returned on Chuck Wagon. Perfect temps and excellent trails!

My sister, brother in law {and niece!} are in town and obviously we wanted to show them some cool spots in Sedona while my parents babysat! We picked them up around 8 and then headed to Long Canyon. My sister is pregnant so I was instructed to pick very easy & safe hikes. Apparently, I’m not very good at that... We hit up Birthing cave first and it was a party in there. People posing on ledges, and others just seeming to want to sit around there all day. We didn’t stay very long, and passed hoardes of people heading in during our exit. This was the first time we assisted tourists in getting to the cave during this hike; at least these people were headed in the right direction though, lol! Next up was the ladder ruins and my recollection was that it was an easy, short, steep-ish climb to get there. So, either I forgot about the bushwhacking or it was way more overgrown than my last visit, ooops! This was my sister’s first time bushwhacking & my poor brother in law was wearing shorts & scratched up his legs pretty good. There was an area with a narrow ledge that was a bit intimidating for my sister, plus it was muddy so we didn’t have the best traction. With slow, careful steps and lots of assistance in the scrambling, they made it up to the ladder & dwellings. We ate lunch with beautiful views and had it to ourselves, yay! Getting back down was maybe even harder than going up, given the mud. When we finally made it back to the main trail with no falls, they were very relieved! On our way back, we passed two women who were looking for the birthing cave; they weren’t happy to learn they’d hiked close to 2 miles past the turning point. I assisted them in showing them how to use their alltrails map and we went on our merry way. After about 5 minutes, group number two was also looking for the birthing cave and had also gone way past the turn. After giving them instructions, we actually had to yell out to them twice more that they weren’t at the turnoff yet. Alas, they heard us yell, go to your right now and off they went! We kicked down some unnecessary cairns & raked over the “cave here” written in the dirt on our way out. I guess we tired out the family, since they didn’t want to hike anywhere else! Also, I need to better assess what I think are pregnancy friendly hikes, lol. Still a beautiful day in Sedona with my family!

Decided after yesterday's debacle, some easy-to-follow trails would be in order. Long Canyon has been on the list for a bit, and it seemed like good Sedona weather, so decided on that this morning (my friend literally showed up at my place, and I said, "I was thinking Mazatzals, Supes, or Sedona, what sounds good?"). Last minute decisions are great.

Anyways, we parked near Boynton TH, along the road, and started up over Deadman's Pass. Everything from here up to where Long Canyon takes a little jog north is pretty flat, easy jogging. After the north jog the scenery gets like 10 times better. Colors were popping near the end of the trail.

At the official trail end, there are a few different canyons you can explore. We walked up the one to the east (towards Maroon Mountain), some vegetation and scrambling involved. Curious whether one could get up to Maroon from there, but it looked like a pretty steep scree slope farther up ahead.

Way down was fast and easy, took a detour around Mescal Mountain. Mascal trail was good fun.

Started hiking early-ish to beat the heat (around 6:30 am). No gate or anything at the TH to wait for. There are two small dirt parking areas on either side of the street but parking is also ok on the street. We went to the birthing cave first. It's a great spot for photographs but not as impressive as many other cool caves and formations in the Sedona area. Sedona has so many to choose from! This SW side of Maroon Mountain visible from the trail is magical. The rock formations look like swirly ice cream cones! The further upstream we hiked the prettier the forest got too. No water, except a few tiny puddles, after the rains the night before. We kept hiking past the "End of the Trail" sign a bit to scope out if it was possible to connect Long & Secret. Would love to know if anyone has successfully done that. It looks possible but we got a little off-route from what we have previously mapped out and didn't have the time to continue further. Beautiful canyon! Sedona never disappoints.
