This trail has been on my radar for many years, and in spite of driving right by this location many times, I never had an opportunity to fit it in any plans. I was supposed to hike here a few weeks earlier, but late season blizzard closed all the roads going north from Phoenix and we had to push the visit later.

We started out from Cliff Dwellers Lodge about 6am and made it to the trailhead right at sunrise. There were no other vehicles in the trailhead parking lot as we started up the trail. The weather was very crisp, but not cold.

Reading triplogs and seeing photos of this hike, I kinda knew what to expect and it didn't disappoint. The trail was clear and maintained all the way up. There's a series of switchbacks at the start that gets the elevation up and then some back and forth with gradual elevation gain and then a series of steeper switchbacks going up the ridge. There was quite a bit of care taken with this trail. Lots of stone steps and short ups all along the trail. Some parts were precariously close to the edge, but it was a clear path all the way up.

The views of the Vermilion Cliffs, the River and Echo Peak across the river were outstanding and changed as I made my way up. The early morning colors were very nice, as was the shadows the trail was in.

The views up top were amazing. Looking west and south to the cliffs and river, and to the east towards Horseshoe Bend, Lake Powell and Page all presented some outstanding views.

We explored out towards the peninsula along the river and that area was impressive. Very reminiscent of Coyote Buttes, with crazy wave patterns and other geological wonders. There was some discussion about heading toward Horseshoe Bend before we headed back down, but I will save that for another trip.

The weather was not hot, but not cold. It would have been nice to have some clouds as the bright sun made for the absolute worst light for photos. But, even in these conditions, the area was stunning.

Another visit to this area will be required. Dominguez Pass to the Paria River for sure next time and a visit to the Horseshoe Bend peninsula to taunt the touristas gathered at the view area across the river. An excellent day in Marble Canyon!

On the way back from Zion we stopped at Cliff Dwellers Lodge for the night. Very nice accommodations (for the area), but a little pricey. This stopover worked for me because it gave me the opportunity to hit one of the trails in the area. I knew there were 3 relatively easy ones in the area and opted for Spencer Trail. Funny. I was out the door at 5:30. But 5:30 in Arizona vs 5:30 in Utah is a stark difference. Literally black and white. The sun was just stating to color the cliffs in the distance. Short drive to Lee’s Ferry and I was on the trail just before 6am.

Quite a few interesting historical remnants and signs to start the hike. The Spencer Trail is well signed as it splits off the River Trail and it doesn’t waste any time with starting the climb. The initial climb isn’t bad at all. Stairs, rocks and compact dirt made for good footing and a quick ascent. The trail is amazingly well camouflaged in the cliffs. For the most I never had a good sense of where the trail was heading, except up. When I stopped to look I was surprised at how much elevation I had gained and then, looking up, how much more was still above me. Looking up, made me feel as if I had t gained anything at all. The trail was pretty sweet for the first 1.6 miles and then at some point the trail turns from compact dirt and rock to sand and still maintains a steady ascent. That’s not fair. That kind of an incline with a sandy trail. :pk: Luckily, it didn’t last long and there were patches of rock along the way. From the couple of upward glances I afforded myself, I reach the top came quicker than anticipated. No complaints with that and I was given some incredible distant views. There was a wooden stick standing lopsided indicating the end of the trail. I did a little bit of wandering at the top, checking out a large cairn and one of the higher viewpoints. After all that hard work, I would have loved to explore the mesa more, but time always seems to be an issue. Took some shots of the views and headed back.

Views were great, though once again air quality was not the best. Just hazy in all directions. The timing was perfect. I had the cliff shadows for the entire hike. No wildlife. Had the trail to myself until the end when I met 4 Aussie’s heading up.

I drove a bus full of river trip passengers to Lees Ferry, then parked the bus and hiked part of the Spencer Trail. I didn't hike the whole thing because I didn't have time. I had permission to leave the bus and do the hike, but I am a bit slow these days, take more breaks, and I didn't have time to complete the hike and also get the bus back to Flagstaff at the time I promised my boss. When I got back he said it doesn't really matter, as long as the bus is not needed. So, that's good to know.

The lower half of the trail has been reworked a great deal, with lots of stone steps, wider tread, etc. The upper part is more like what the whole trail used to be--a bit rough, but very hikeable. I hadn't hiked it since 2016.

I could see the boats from my company (AzRA) launch and go downriver.

Heading up, mustard is getting ready to take over Black Mesa near Sunset Point.

Needed a hike to fill a few hours. This fit the bill since it's among the best effort-to-reward hikes in Arizona and it was new for Sean. In today's physics class hike, I learned about the material angle of repose and the aeolian process. Likewise, learned varied-pitch amplification tricks a respectable birder.

Morning light favors this hike. The afternoon-sun glare off of the river is taxing. We did the add-on leg to the non-sidewalk accessible Horseshoe Bend. Near perfect weather.

A few months ago I was at Marble Canyon doing a couple different hikes. Afterwards I went over to check out Horseshoe Bend. I had never been and it is only a 45 minute drive from Marble Canyon. While there I got the bright idea to hike from Lee's Ferry at Marble Canyon to the end of the peninsula of Horseshoe Bend. It was too hot at that time to consider such a thing so I planned it for October. The kicker was to have someone come with me and while I hiked to the peninsula have them drive around to Horseshoe Bend and take my picture from across the river. Joe agreed to go along and he did just that.

We started out a little after 8AM and he joined me for the hike up the Spencer Trail. Then he went back down and drove around to Horseshoe Bend. At the same time I continued my hike across the rugged plateau and then out to the end. To my surprise I saw several small pools of water along the way from the recent rains. One was even roughly 50 feet across. Once at the end I could see the people on the other side looking out but they were barely visible. I couldn't even make out the color of their cloths. Basically just little figurines. Luckily there was cell service so I called Joe and eventually he could see me but I was also just a small dot. I hadn't really considered that fact that we would be a little over a half a mile apart. Everything is so grand in scale it is hard to imagine not being able to see someone over there but that was the case.

Boats and rafts passed by below and I shouted out "HELLO" really loud. Joe and everyone could hear it along with the following echo. Although the photo op. didn't turn out to be as good as I had hoped it was still a very cool experience.

I have two more hikes in the area on my bucket list that will have to be saved for another day...

1. Spencer to the Steps and 2. Echo Peak

Both look to be awesome but will require some planning and the right conditions.

Hiked up Spencer with JJ. Good 5G at the top from Page even on my cheapie prepaid Verizon, which is signal throttled vs standard plans.

Parted ways with JJ and hiked down to the trailhead. I jumped in the jjiii rocket and respectively weaved through the hogans up to Horseshoe Bend. Driving around in dad's 911 was a riot as a kid but the jjiii has exceptional acceleration vs that 80s toy.

As JJ described, entering Horseshoe Bend is like waiting in one of the three lines at emissions. I don't follow trending sources so I had no clue that 4,000 people visit here on average daily.

Piestewa was the busiest inner-city trail a decade ago but that's half the "explorers" vs the now mighty Horseshoe Bend. The Conga line here is slower, it's a paved walk and not one hello Joe.

JJ's plan was to hike to the flip side peninsula so I could get a photo of him ~0.6 mi across. Echos carried across better than I would have expected but boy howdy was he tiny.

The AEG on Horseshoe is pathetic but cool to experience once.

I have been wanting to make a GPS route for this one for quite some time. I have only done it once in the distant past with success. All the other times I didn't find the correct path down and had to take the dry route back or I went back across the top and back down the Spencer. This time I had success thanks to the help of a drawn route I made in Route Editor. (Thank you Linda for teaching me how to load it from the iPhone directly to my Garmin Fenix). I had Route Scout on the ready if that didn't work out.

Basically you go up the Spencer Trail, then head North to the Dominguez Pass. Route finding can be difficult at times as there isn't really much of a trail after you top out on the Spencer. Just keep going North until you reach the Dominguez Pass. This is where you drop down and can return via the dry route or you can take the Ute trial (no real trail) down to a break in the cliff walls. From here you drop down to the Paria River trail and take that back towards the Lonely Dell Ranch. Once there walk the road back to where you parked and boom you are done. This route is fairly clean. I overshot at the Dominguez Pass by about 100 feet and then realized my mistake. I cleaned the track to correct that.

If you are in the area and like adventure this one is a good one. Just be sure and take plenty of water because it can get hot and dry out there.

This trail was challenging as heck! So strenuous, but also, I was quite on edge (figuratively and literally) many times! I am super glad that we did it though!

Short weekend excursion with Isabella. Not the fastest trip to the top and back but she was a trooper and didn't give up. Well she tried several times but I wasn't having it.

Got to take a friend to my favorite place in Arizona!! The look on their face once we hit the top of this cliff was worth the lung crushing hike up. With breathtaking views of the Colorado river from both sides of the cliffs, this is my top hike to do. And getting to play in the river is fun, too. Short easy trail with lots of room to roam at the top. If you can make it to the radio tower it offers a nice high point to view everything from- though not sure if that many radio waves will fry your brain

Learning the history of this amazing place was pretty cool. It started as a Mormon crossing before finally being taken over by the government as a protected place. Loved bringing its history alive and imagining what it must have been like way back then, before roads and before anything marred the land- to imagine crossing over northern Arizona and into Utah.

Need trail info? PM me.

Maybe the most scenic trail I have ever done. I thought it was challenging but not too bad of a hike, although in some areas it is rough and you have to jump or climb up in sections. Some parts near the top of the trail were sandy which I thought was pretty cool, water was clearly present here at some point all the way up there which is pretty fascinating. When I first arrived their was a large gathering of FLDS members which kind of gave me a culture shock within Arizona. Given the history though of Lee's Ferry it makes sense though. I think the drive in on the 89A to Lee's Ferry Road is one of the most scenic drives in the state of Arizona. I realized I was driving 35 in a 65 at some point along the 89A and usually I tend to speed.

We made a half-hearted attempt at Dominguez Pass, but turned around after the communication tower where it starts to get pretty rugged. We had limited water and started late, with three dogs, it seemed more wise to turn back. I was also a little worried about the unknown, finding the Mule Ears and getting us all down safely without any issues. Also the hiking description was not really matching the route I had downloaded, so that was a little bit worrisome. Our route to the communication tower was good however, but Route Scout went crazy and its really no good to post. Nice views though!

While in the area I figured I would do the Spencer again this morning. I had hopes of doing it this time with Dominguez-Pass and come back via the Paria River Trail. I didn't have a track and Marble Canyon Lodge doesn't have their wifi up and running yet so I was going strictly off of memory. Up top the peaks and valleys all start to look the same. I just kept heading northwest across the top of the Echo Cliffs until I got to what I thought was the correct break. Down I went only to find that it was the wrong spot. I didn't know if I had over shot or under shot. I scaled the sides of the cliffs back and forth for a bit and came up empty. I decided to go back up top and re-evaluate.

It was about 11:30 and it was getting hot. Not knowing for sure where the Dominguez-Pass was I decided to head back the way I came and drop back down on the Spencer. If I had more time and more water I would have continued to search but today I was short on both. At the boat launch I looked at my watch, it read 105 degrees out. I hated not doing the hike as planned but this was the right choice.

Upon getting home I compared my track to the others for the dry loop and I see that I was about .45 of a mile short of the proper place to descend. I will go back soon and make a track for the full loop when it gets a little cooler.

Driving home from Vail today I decided to stop and spend the night at Marble Canyon Lodge. Boy has it changed since the fire burned the place down. Whole new lodge is in place. Anyway I had just enough time to do one of my favorite hikes in Arizona. The Spencer Trail. Short, steep and killer views!

I may hit this one again tomorrow before heading home but do the Spencer Dominguez Loop.

I had just experienced my first night car camping in Flagstaff and was incredibly excited. We were slowly making our way to the north rim of the Grand Canyon. But the Vermillion Cliffs were one stop on our way there. The drive in was amazing, getting to cross over the Colorado River and see it in person. We drove in towards Lee's Ferry and began the trek up the cliff around 830. The trail up was incredibly beautiful, with the Colorado river flanking the canyon. Brutal on the cardio but the switchbacks up the cliffside made it a pretty decent trail. When we got to the top we hiked across the plateau to see the other side. Boats in the river looked like tiny white specks compared to the huge cliffs towering over them. You could see Page in the distance. We then hiked towards a radio tower that was close to the Vermillion cliffs. There was a faint trail marked with cairns that led towards it but we soon lost it and just continued on to the tower. There were some amazing views of the cliffs and you could see the Colorado River cutting across the flat land. Headed back down around 1 and had a nice lunch by the river on our way out.

This ended up being a very cool final stop and hike of our eight days on the north rim of the Grand Canyon. The hike got pretty good reviews from the quick research I did at Jacob's Lake and even though I knew it would be a little warm for the pups, we went for it, as it was a short one, we would have the benefit of a little shade and we had a nice river to cool down in after.

The trail is listed as rugged and not maintained, but I thought there were several signs of some great trail condition and actually found it to be in pretty good shape for its route up the sheer cliff face. The views from the top make the hike worth it, as do the views of the Colorado towards Lee's Ferry, as one climbs. Jackie was a little winded going up, but the dogs and myself did just fine. After some pictures on the top, we headed back down at a more brisk pace to get the pups to water faster. They thoroughly enjoyed their dip in the Colorado and even I partook, having not showered in over a week. I am a little intrigued by this area and think there could definitely be some opportunities for further exploration during the cooler months.

Super nice hike on a warm afternoon. I've got a Grand Canyon backpacking trip on my calendar later this month, and Spencer Trail is the best trail near Page I know of that mimics the steep switchbacks of the Hermit Trail I'll be hiking. Nice wildflowers here and there.
