Fourth and final day of our SE AZ hiking trip:

After three days of hiking in the Chiricahua Mountains (one day in the Wilderness and two in the National Monument) we were ready for a slight change in scenery. Actually our original plan was to hit the Dragoons for a few days then the Chiricahuas, but two things flipped the plan.

1. I really didn't see anything that appealed to me in the Dragoons other than the Stronghold Trail so that would be the only one.
2. More importantly, we wanted to avoid the I-10 at all costs so we took the route through Globe and Safford. (Only a 15 minute wait at 6:15 am on a NON-closure Monday)

In the end it turned out better working our way East-to-West over the 4 days. And with such a long first day of driving, we opted to hit the trail farthest from home, which was Turkey Pen in the Wilderness, then the 40 mile drive to our Air BnB.

Ok, let's get back to today's hike.
With 60° @8 am we got off to a very pleasant start. We were thrown off just a bit at the start due to various 'Nature Trail' signs seemingly at odds with the expected direction of travel of the Stronghold Trail so we ended up taking a short detour before getting on track.

Not spending a much time reading about the hike in advance, it seemed quite unintuitive to start out by hiking 1.5 miles in the opposite direction of the waypoint I set for the gate at the saddle. Only upon reaching 'John's Well' did we begin heading in the 'correct' direction.
(Straight line distance between the TH and gate was .95 miles, yet it will take 3 miles of hiking)

Although it was one long climb of 1025' to the saddle, after our hikes in the Chiricahuas it seemed like a breeze. No constant 6" steps up one-after-another, just a steady ascent on a relatively smooth tread. So when we arrived at the gate we still had energy to burn. Ok, but does that mean we had enough to descend all the way down to the Western TH and end up with a 10+ mile round-trip? No way!

At least lets go a little ways and re-assess the situation. Plus, with some beta Tracey had about a cairn just past the first switch-back supposedly marking a detour that climbers used to some specific boulders, let's check it out. Knowing the beta was OLD, we weren't very disappointed to find no obvious cairn, or route either of us was willing to try.

Yeah right! Me NOT willing to check something out? No way!

So, I DID go about 40' along what could have been a trail (game trail?) but in very short order the Manzanita made me rethink it. Nothing doing here, so with a long drive back home on deck after the hike, we decided, no matter that some folks claim the scenery is better on the Western side, let's go back to the gate, take an early lunch break and head back down.
(The scenery difference? Although we did not go far down the West side, In our estimation it was far better East of the gate)

On the return trip, since we practically blew by Half Moon Tank on the ascent we allotted a few extra minutes before moving on. We also spent a bit of time attempting to locate a supposed Cochise Spring which was on my US Topo map somewhere in the vicinity of John's Well, but had no luck.

Once back to the 'Nature Trail' at the Stronghold Campground, we decided to check it out. Weirdly enough there appeared to be a few separate parts, one a full loop and the other a winding out-and-back. Although there were panels along the way providing historical context, there were so many I didn't bother taking photos of any... besides, I already had taken more than enough photos on this hike already.

Ok, for the long drive home... but since it would be a bad time on a Thursday to return through Superior on the US 60 (closed from 9 am to 2 pm) we broke down and follow I-10 until turning off onto AZ 77, up to Oracle Junction, turn onto AZ 79, following the historic Pinal Pioneer Parkway. Wow, this was great! 65mph, no traffic to speak of, it was actually a relaxing drive. The only thing that kept our minds from wandering was the odd bits of burned ground on either side of the highway between mileposts 100 & 110. Our first thought was prescribed burns or back-burns, but with long gaps in between each that made no sense. Oh well, somethings we're not meant to know I guess.

Another Southern AZ adventure. This time – Cochise Stronghold. I visited this place back in the 1990s but only stayed around the campground area. On this visit, we hiked from the eastside over to the west side and then back.

The history of this area is as amazing as the scenery. 150 years ago, this was one of the last refuges of the remaining tribes resisting the American advance across the continent. Cochise was a leader of legend for sure, the last of the great war chiefs.

A little chilly at the start, but it took less than a mile before I started shedding layers. Lots of snow still hanging on in the shadowy areas. Speaking with a local walking her dog at the campground before we started up, she told us they got 6” of snow on Thursday/Friday.

The trail winds around the main prominence of the stronghold, up to a saddle/divide and then down to the west canyon. Right off, the amazing granite spires and formations are the star. The trail was in excellent condition, well defined and clear of any obstructions the entire hike. The west side had the more impressive rock formations, but both sides were amazing.

We had the trail to ourselves up until the divide. After that, we saw a steady stream of hikers coming up from the campground area. This is a popular trail for sure.

Once we made it up and over to the west canyon, we took a break and had some lunch. We came across a bunch of rock climbers going up from here. With all of the amazing granite spires, I can see this being a climber’s paradise. I saw a couple of deer hiking back up towards the saddle as well. The only critter sightings all day.

We made it back to the parking area outside the campground and it was packed. Lots of hikers on the trail.

This hike was stunning from the beginning to the end. The weather was perfect. A long day starting in Mesa, but an excellent way to spend a Sunday in Southern AZ for sure.

We've never been (but have wanted to go) to the Cochise Stronghold area, and it didn't disappoint! Especially with quite a bit of runoff from the recent rains. We got a late start and weren't able to go much further than the Half Moon Tank, but will be doing the west side in the next couple of days.

Back to the Dragoon Mountains for some hiking, this time on the west side. Finished a portion of the Cochise trail we didn't do the last time. It was a 23 mile drive over dirt road to get to the trail head the last 4 in Stronghold Canyon requiring high clearance vehicles (I told Ginny I could probably get my Prius in here with a little careful driving). Beautiful grass, oak terrain with massive granite rock boulders scattered around. The 3.5 mile hike up to Stronghold pass had magnificent views over West Stronghold Canyon. We had the canyon pretty much to ourselves with the exception of a group of campers at the trailhead. Stronghold creek had a light flow in places but everything was pretty damp from the last few days rain. Not much in the way of flower report except the monzanita bushes. Trail is in excellent condition and made the climb to the saddle easier.

After finishing the hike we headed down Canyon to Council Rock to check out that area. Just as we were getting ready to drive back down the canyon a herd of jeeps ( I think that's what you call a gathering of jeeps) comes up the road, never saw so many jeeps in one area except at the Jeep dealer. Must of been some kind of Jeep club. Great day for hiking in a seldom visited mountain range

Trying to hit up some great southern AZ hikes I have not visited in a while. This certainly sits high atop that list. Wonderful hike. Lot of water in half moon tank and running along the creek. Got treated to a cascading waterfall on the east side of the Divide. Was not expecting that. Outstanding scenery and views all along this one. Saw a few people but certainly not much. Took a nice break at the divide on the way out and another at the East TH, under a huge fragrant juniper along the flowing creek. How delightful

Ginny had never been to the Dragoons so we decided to hike the Cochise trail to the west side. We changed our mind mid way into the hike and decided to just hike to the saddle and do the west side another time. Since we cut off about 3.5 miles of the hike we opted to hike the Middlemarch Canyon Trail to the saddle.

The Cochise trail is a fairly easy hike up to the saddle, well maintained trail. Not a lot of hikers in the morning but quite a few later in the day. Creek had a light flow in both the cochise trail branch and the middlemarch trail branch. Halfmoon tank was full (don't recall it ever being anything other than full). Magnificent views of rock formations along the trail and West Cochise Canyon from the Saddle.

Middlemarch Trail starts out as an easy walk but the last mile is as steep as any trail I have seen. I didn't remember much about this trail but when I got to the part where it heads straight uphill it all came back to me. Reminded me of a jeep trail that sees where it wants to go and heads in a straight line right to it. The good part is there are very few step ups so a slow steady pace works well. Once at the top there is a view overlooking Middlemarch Canyon, nothing to write home about though. Took a short break at the saddle and headed back. We did make a stop at a tank in this canyon that we noticed as we were hiking up. This tank is located about a half mile in from the Cochise Trail, there is no sign indicating that it is there. Much bigger than Halfmoon Tank. Well worth the .1 mile side excursion. We did not see anyone on this trail.

Good day for hiking, temps in the upper 50's and very little wind. The ground was still wet from yesterdays rain.

Always enjoy the scenery of the Dragoons!
Hiked the standard route up to the Stronghold Divide and back.
Lunch was had at Half Moon tank on the return.
We encountered a hiking group of 11 from Tucson and two separate groups of horseback riders along the trail.
Sunny clear blue skies throughout.
Creeks were all flowing good.
Mexican food in Wilcox before returning home.

Preston, Brian, and myself headed over to the east side TH and did an out and back on the Stronghold Trail. Seems this trail traverses the most interesting granite boulder terrain of the range, with the geology north and south of the fault where the trail runs having less scenic slopes and no large impressive features. Mount Glenn to the north, and China and Cochise Peaks to the south looking a bit more like the Whetstones with sedimentary layers of limestone or marble, or other rock.

This was a new area for me, and a good introduction to the range. Something about the scenery and day reminded me a lot of when I would go to Sedona from Flagstaff, 15 years ago. The vegetation is very similar.

East of the pass there was a lot of water, with the Halfmoon tank holding a lot of water, and the streams flowing well further down. West of the pass there was a small waterfall, but no other surface water.

Stats are from Preston's old official route, cloned, reversed 1, joined, and then synced. Seems syncing trimmed a lot of AEG.

Hiked to Half Moon Tank with wifey, LE, and wifey’s niece and partner. Lots of water in the creek and the tank was full, which made for nice pictures.

Afterward we stopped in Tombstone for an early dinner.

Decided to check out Cochise Stronghold for my first time venturing into the Dragoon Mountains. Getting there was not super difficult, and didn't have to wake up super early to get a 10am or so start. Started out poking around the campground a little, strolled around the interpretive loop, and then headed up the trail. Gradual grade all the way up to the divide, and there was water in most of the drainages on the east side.

West side generally offered better views, but a little drier and still chilly in the shade. Got to the west trailhead and decided to turn around. Most of the way up to the saddle I located a side trail, which based on Strava heatmaps may offer an option for a loop via a saddle near Rockfellow Dome. Probably would've tried this had I known about it.

On the way back, I decided to head up Middlemarch Trail, and took a noticeable side track up to Shaw Tank (as labeled on the FS Topo), where there were some deer hanging out. Followed a path south that looked like it would reconnect with Middlemarch Trail, but it faded and I went cross country back to the trail. Decided to call it a day and headed back down to TH, completing the nature trail on the way down.

Finally got a chance to get out and hike outside of Phoenix and see some great scenery.

Headed out from Wally's at 5:30am. Took the shortcut through Gilbert and Chandler to I-10 and saw a meat wagon making a pickup along the Hunt Highway and McQueen Road. They met up with some police a mile later as we headed further south. Just past central Tucson I decided to top off the tank since I wasn't sure if I would have enough after the hike. It was at this point 2 hours into the trip the Wally realized to his horror that he forgot: a) his backpack (and water), b) camera, c) GPS, d) wallet. Fortunately he had a soft cooler with a shoulder strap that he some extra water and Gatorades. We were just barely able to make due to be able to still hike, although with a comfort level less than he would have preferred.

the Cochise Campground is closed for the (fire) season, so we had to park at the gate. There are No Parking signs in various spots, but generally in spots where it's nearly impossible to park. We saw a local resident walking her dog that we asked some advice from about parking and she told us it was ok to park on the east side of the road. she also asked where the No Parking signs were as she walked right past them :-k .

It was pretty toasty right from the start and I was expecting this to maybe be more than we bargained for . I also got us off trail early trying to follow the track I downloaded that looked to turn off the interpretive trail to the Cochise Trail. The cicadas were in full throat making a hellacious racket nearly the entire time. So much for peacefulness. the hike up to the divide was toasty at first, but not too steep or difficult. As we got to the divide, the breezes picked up and being 1000' higher also helped.

Past the divide is where the scenery really gets nice. That whole canyon down the west side is amazing. It helped having clear skies and just enough clouds to cast shadows. There was a cloud cell hovering around that looked mildly threatening to start rain, but fortunately all it did was cast shadows on us as we made our way back up the canyon after lunch at the far trailhead. The 100 Classic Hikes in AZ book says to bail on this trail at the divide and turn around, but I have to take major issue with that. It was some extra work for the 2nd ascent to the divide, but well worth it and easily the highlight of the hike.

finished up about 2:30pm and headed the back to Tombstone through Gleeson to spend the night for the hike the following day. Got dinner on Allen St (with the wooden sidewalks) and had a beer at the Tombstone Brewery, and sleeping by 9:30pm. From the hotel we could see the mountain range where we had just hiked.

Have always loved being in the Dragoons!
Spent the day hiking in Cochise Land on the Stronghold trail.
Cool rock formations w hoodoos' ... Not Chiricahua NM cool, but cool.
More people on the trail than desired, but all very friendly.
Cows were the only wildlife spotted.
Blue sky to start, overcast at the end.
FYI - $8 day use fee to park in the campground.
Very rewarding scenic day!

Wanted to explore this trail for quite some time and today while in the area we decided to hike up the trail for a bit. Quite a nice trail, well signed and maintained with some nice views. Also enjoyed the short nature and history loop trails near the campground.

My first time in the Stronghold and it's a truly incredible place. The hike up the eastern side is fairly gradual. The descent down the western side feels steep, but it wasn't too bad coming back up. I ran into some ATVers at the west trailhead who asked me where the petroglyphs were. I didn't know there were any in the area, but did see a "Do not disturb the archaeological resources in the vicinity" sign. The only other people I saw were a couple who turned around at the divide.

Dragoon sampler, with great at-large camping on the east side. Over and back on CS279 in the morning, nice views of the rock formations and flowing water in the creeks. Then over to the west side in the afternoon for SG332, a fun little route that's a little rough but not hard to follow.

We ventured into Cochise Stronghold with the idea of exploring one of the canyons in the area. Belinda had been in this particular canyon before so we had some idea of what to expect off trail. But first we hiked up Cochise Stronghold Trail #279 to make our way around to the top of the canyon. We passed Cochise Spring which had plenty of water and with all the snow and rain virtually every drainage was flowing to some degree. We hit snow line just before Cochise divide but nothing too much with only a couple of inches. We also passed Half Moon Tank that was also full before hiking to the Cochise Divide where we then looked for a spot to drop into the canyon for the off trail part of the hike.

We headed down canyon picking our way through brush and looking for rocky pathways over the rough terrain. Eventually we were in the main drainage and following the now flowing canyon. A few patches of snow but fortunately no ice for the rock scrambling that we had to do. Huge boulders abound as we continued down canyon with undercuts, rock caverns and holes to squeeze through. It was a pretty sporty route as we climbed, crawled and slide our way down canyon. There were even a couple of waterfalls that we were able to climb behind for a unique view. We took a break before the bottom on a nice sunny boulder spot.

After the break it was back to the fun work of finishing up the canyon. A few more interesting holes to slide through and downclimbs to make it to the bottom but we still managed to finish around 330. A lot of fun in this canyon with the extra water to increase the sport factor!
