Midday hike at SoMo. I randomly chose a trail from South Mountain and ended up with the Ray Road Access Trail. In the past, I’ve always hiked from another location to get to this trail. Tried something different. Parked at the Vista Canyon Park and took a community path to the wash. First I walked the perimeter of the park and then I followed a sidewalk alongside a maintained wash to get to the desert wash just past Ray Road. Not much to say about the park or the sidewalk to South Mountain. There were some nice fountains along the way and I’m sure this is a convenient access point for local residence. Happy to say there was a smooth transition from sidewalk to desert trail. No “no trespassing” or “private property” signs. Once in the natural wash there were two evident options: a solid bike route that stayed on the firmer edges of the banks or a “true” sandy wash trail that was like hiking through beach sand. On the way in I took the sandy wash trail and then, once in South Mountain Park, did a very short loop. On the way out I took the bike route.

Easy hike. It was nice checking off the wash section of this trail, though I probably won’t do it again. Some beautiful homes in the back section. Saw a few people on the paved paths, but no one past Ray Road in the wash. A little wildlife…quail and chipmunks. Not the best air quality, but nice temps, even at noon.

Early morning hike at SoMo. Decided to revisit the south side of South Mountain. There are a plethora of use trails that crisscross the backyards of Awatukee homes. I wasn’t too happy with the parking options mentioned in the Ray Road Access description so I ended up parking along Warpaint and hiking in along the Guadalupe Perimeter Trail. A bit of a hike to get to what I consider to be the “Ray Access Trails”. About 2.5 miles on the Gaudalupe got me to the saddle that leads down into this enclosed oasis. Sadly, the oasis seems to be seasonal now as it has been dry on my last two visits. Still very green in the wash. I continued my “gridding” from where I had left off on my previous visit. I covered most of the trails east of the oasis. I took a trail from the top of a hill down to a residential cul-de-sac. This is shorter entry points displayed on the on the Ray Access description. Convenient for residence, but there is a sign there stating that the trail is for “Ray homeowners”. There is room for parking at this location so I’m not sure how they enforce it. I return back to the “innards” of South Mountain. I followed the longer, wash trail for a brief distance, but didn’t take it to the road. Hiked back to car along the Gaudalupe. I felt good about the trails that I covered, while still respecting the privacy of the homes in the area.

The weather was fantastic! Breezy and I had occasional sprinkles for most of the hike. Totally unexpected and enjoyable. No wildlife. 11 bikers, 4 hikers and 2 runners.

The last time I was in this area I noticed the junctions for this trail and the Helipad Trail along the Desert Classic and made a note to come back one day and check them out. I had some things I've been meaning to get done at home, so I wanted to do a hike that wouldn't take too long. This seemed to fit the bill. I originally thought it would be in the 6 mile range, but as I carved together a route on Route Scout, the mileage added up close to 10 fairly fast.

Started from the Desert Foothills TH. There's a new restroom facility made from block with full plumbing. Wasn't there just under 2 years ago. Nice to see some improvements being done here. I headed out on the Desert Classic and turned south towards Ray Road. along the way (and on the way back), I found even more unmarked trails that look like it might be worth yet another return visit. Probably best to save that hike for the really hot weather. Although, this hike actually had more elevation gain than I was expecting, topping out over 1K AEG for the day.

On my way back I headed over to the helipad via that trail. It was interesting to find a narrow little valley that had collected some water from the wash that ran thru it and made a mini-riparian area. The views from the helipad were pretty nice, better than I expected. Just east of the helipad it looks like a filled in mine shaft and some old mining road that's been eroded away, both by nature and man made means. The road seemed to head down into the subdivision below and end between 2 houses.

Headed back down to the Desert Classic and back to the trailhead and called it a day.

I hiked the Ray road access to Desert Classic. Once on Desert Classic I hiked the Helipad trail. I then came back on Helipad until the intersection with Ray road access and took it back to my car. My track is just the one-way from Ray road to Desert Classic.

Stayed at work too late for a decent hike, but wanted to get some exercise anyway. Started at sunset so I kept it short so I wouldn't be stuck out on the trail in the dark. Parked in cul de sac at North end of Rock Wren. Trail goes straight up the hill from there for about a half mile to the top of a hill. The trail winds through rocky outcrops with cacti and is very pretty, especially at twilight.

I had enough light to head down the hill to the trail at the bottom of the little valley on the other side, and then hightailed it back to the car before I ran out of light. I nice way to get a little outdoor hill workout in a very short time.

Not exactly what I planned on today, but its been awhile since I've done some of these trails so it wasn't a bad thing. I had hoped to do the recently added Sidewinder Trail to cross it off the "get er done" list, but I missed the turn. I started from the Pima Wash TH and took the Desert Classic west. I took a left at what I thought would lead me to the Sidewinder but I realized I had gone too far when I started to recognize parts of the Ray Road Access Trail. At this point I realized that the Sidewinder was somewhere behind me and I figured to do a loop involving the Ray Access Trail instead. I didn't make it all the way to Ray Rd but I did a loop involving one of the hills that borders the subdivision. There are some decent hills in this area and I got pushed hard going up one of them by a hard core runner. But for the most part I had a nice controlled pace for the duration. After the Ray loop, I took the Classic back to the Pima Wash. Jogged the whole thing, but I don't think I could do much more and started to fade at the end. Kind of nice, encountered 15 hikers, 30 bikers and 35 trail runners so I had quite a bit of company on the trails and 1 trail runner kind of set the pace for the last three miles. A little too fast for me but I was able to keep him in sight.

Hit the trail early(pre6am) with LiLD. Nice overcast with a touch of humidity. Once you get past the houses you have a few trail options. We went out to D.C. and came back the same way. We saw a dozen or so hikers. Trail is in good shape.

First of 2 hikes this morning. This is one of the easier trails at south mountain but was in very good shape. Trying to get all the trails done at south mountain. Started a little before sunrise and we had some amazing views. HAZtraks was being weird on this one ](*,) so we are just using the mileage that has been used before.

On the trails my iPhone indicated 81degF. Off the trails it indicated 91degF. Starting to feel humidity, see some clouds rolling in from the south - could it be monsoon starting to set up?

Got on the trail at a descent time after taking in one of my guilty little pleasures :next: http://www.lemans.org/en/ :)
