I wasn’t too happy with the parking options mentioned in the Ray Road Access description so I ended up parking along Warpaint and hiking in along the Guadalupe Perimeter Trail. A bit of a hike to get to what I consider to be the “Ray Access Trails”. About 2.5 miles on the Gaudalupe got me to the saddle that leads down into this enclosed oasis. Sadly, the oasis seems to be seasonal now as it has been dry on my last two visits. Still very green in the wash. I continued my “gridding” from where I had left off on my previous visit. I covered most of the trails east of the oasis. I took a trail from the top of a hill down to a residential cul-de-sac. This is shorter entry points displayed on the on the Ray Access description. Convenient for residence, but there is a sign there stating that the trail is for “Ray homeowners”. There is room for parking at this location so I’m not sure how they enforce it. I return back to the “innards” of South Mountain. I followed the longer, wash trail for a brief distance, but didn’t take it to the road. Hiked back to car along the Gaudalupe. I felt good about the trails that I covered, while still respecting the privacy of the homes in the area.
The weather was fantastic! Breezy and I had occasional sprinkles for most of the hike. Totally unexpected and enjoyable. No wildlife. 11 bikers, 4 hikers and 2 runners. |
