We spent most of the day visiting some of the popular tourist spots in Yellowstone. I had mixed feelings...lots of great stops that feel like must-see destinations when visiting the park, but it's hard to get too excited about that when everything is swarming with people, and this wasn't even peak season. Lots of waiting around and dealing with parking and traffic, both vehicle and pedestrian. But, when in Yellowstone...

Signal Mountain (0.53 miles)
Before heading north into Yellowstone, we drove up to the top of Signal Mountain and checked out the viewpoint on top, along with Jackson Point Overlook. The views to the east toward the Tetons were virtually non-existent from the summit because of trees. Jackson Point was a little better, but I still wasn't terribly impressed with the partially-obstructed views from up there.

Old Faithful (0.4 miles)
The first stop in Yellowstone was Old Faithful, the king of the tourist attractions. We got there ~10:50AM, and the next forecasted eruption was at 11:08AM +/- 10 minutes, so the timing looked pretty good. A few bison grazed in the middle of the boardwalk while we waited and the benches filled in. Old Faithful wasn't very faithful today, and we ended up waiting almost an hour for the geyser to finally erupt. The buildup had all the excitement of watching water boil on a giant stove. The eruption was cool to see, but if I'd known I'd be sitting there in the crowd for that long, I'm not sure I would've waited for it. [ youtube video ]

Midway Geyser Basin (0 miles)
The next planned stop was Midway Geyer Basin to see Grand Prismatic Spring, but we were stuck in a long line of unmoving cars in a turning lane, waiting to turn into another line of unmoving cars filling the drive into the parking lot. After a few stationary minutes, we bailed on that plan and decided to give it another try earlier in the morning tomorrow.

Lower Geyser Basin (0.66 miles)
Next up was Lower Geyser Basin, where we had more luck with parking. Again, crowded, but the thermal features were interesting to see, including Fountain Paint Pots and various geysers, fumaroles, springs, etc. I suppose boardwalks work well for preventing burns, but they're terrible for moving oblivious, slack-jawed tourists through an area efficiently...the NPS boardwalks need designated stopping zones and/or lanes for slow/unmoving traffic.

Artists' Paint Pots (1.09 miles)
It was a short drive over to the next stop, where we pulled off another parking miracle. This one was similar to Lower Geyser Basin, with boardwalks and a variety of thermal features. [ youtube video ]

Mammoth Hot Springs Terrace Trails (1.7 miles)
For the final stop of the day, we drove north to Mammoth and hiked part of the terrace trails, starting from the middle trailhead. We passed Minerva Terrace, New Blue Spring, and a few other features on the way over to Canary Spring, then came back the same way. Interesting stuff, but crowds were, as always, the main drawback.

West Thumb Geyser Basin (0.92 miles): Did a Figure-8 route through this area. This requires walking on an elevated boardwalk among numerous hot (and boiling) springs on the shore of Yellowstone Lake. The pools contained many colors, from pastel to deep blue to orange. Every hot spring looked impossibly deep, had abundant steam rising from the water on an 85° day, and demonstrated some degree of bubbling or boiling. Someone had lost a hat to one of the boiling springs. Fascinating area, especially with the peaceful lake in the background. Then we walked along the lake, checking out the hot springs immediately adjacent to and within the lake. Abyss Pool and Black Pool were particularly interesting.

Old Faithful to Morning Glory Pool Loop (3.55 miles). Arrived at Old Faithful 10 minutes before it was scheduled to erupt. It eventually erupted 10 minutes later than scheduled. Worth it. We then proceeded along the boardwalk 1.9 miles to Morning Glory Pool, which has exceptional colors. We passed at least 10 other geysers along the way. Two were continuously erupting, with water and mist spraying everywhere. Grand Geyser was scheduled to erupt about 20 minutes from the time we passed by it, and had a crowd of at least 70 people sitting on the boardwalk, waiting for the show. When we reached Morning Glory Pool, we were the only ones there. We spent some time admiring it, then took a different route back. The same crowd was still waiting for Grand Geyser to erupt, and it eventually did, approximately 5 minutes after we had passed it on the way back. We could see the towering spray of water from a quarter mile away. We passed by Castle Geyser, which was also scheduled to erupt soon, and had a crowd of 30 people around it, but the mosquitoes were becoming irritating, so we headed to Old Faithful Inn for the buffet, which was excellent.

Overall a very cool, unique experience walking among these steaming craters and otherworldly colors. It was fascinating to see so many hot springs and geysers, which surpassed my expectations. There were a lot of people, but they were dispersed enough that it didn't really bother us. There were signs everywhere warning about bears, but we didn't see any there, probably due to the high human population, almost all of whom were armed with bear spray.

Spent Aug. 26-27 exploring Yellowstone. Saw pretty much everything in the loop, coming in and out of the south and west entrances.

After our adventure on the Teton Crest Trail, I realized I had opted to prepay for a full tank of gas on the rental car. It seemed stupid not to use it, so we set out on a 400-mile driving adventure through the land of Boo Boo and picinic baskets.

Not much to say. Pictures don't do it justice. As much as I dislike touristy spots, they tend to be that way because they are in fact pretty impressive to see. I'd put this place in that category. I bet it would be nice in winter though...

1st trip
After spending four days backpacking in the Tetons, we spent a night in a KOA Cabin near Jackson. The next day we woke bright and early and made the long drive into Yellowstone. Our plan is to hike a variety of tourist hikes and then spend the night backpacking to Firehole Falls. We’ll do more tourist stuff the next day and will return to Jackson that evening.

The drive up went fairly well. We followed the main highway and made good time. Along the way we passed a large herd of bison just off the road. We continued on and had to pass through a portion of Teton National Park and then on to Yellowstone. I had an NPS Pass which was very convenient. Once we entered Yellowstone we continued north and headed right for Old Faithful where we picked up our backpacking permit. It was quick and easy getting our permit. The ranger asked if we needed to see the bear safety video and we said no. We spoke about our four days in the Tetons so he was comfortable with us not watching it.

After that we headed over to the general store and then walked over to Old Faithful where the crowds were massing for the eruption. We ended up having to wait 20 minutes for it blow but it was worth it. The geyser launches water into the air roughly 50 feet. We watched for about sixty seconds and I said that’s enough let’s go! So we pulled a Clark Griswold and walked away as Old Faithful continued to erupt. From there we drove over to Biscuit Basin, Grand Prismatic Spring and then Fountain Paint Pot. We made several short stops and did some very light hiking. The geysers and hot springs are amazing and this place is crowded for a reason. We found it best to park on the road and then walk to the attractions. The parking lots were jammed pack especially during the afternoon.

Once it hit mid-afternoon we drove back to the Old Faithful area for lunch. There were only a few options for us. We waited in a very long line at a grille by the general store. The food took a while but it was nice to chill after the go go go the past few days. After lunch we picked up some supplies and headed back to Biscuit Basin where we planned on backpacking to Firehole Falls.

Fast forward to Day 2… We completed our backpack and returned to the rental car parked at Biscuit Basin. We packed up our gear and headed north. Our goal is to complete a loop with short stops along the way and a long stop at The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. We did a quick drive by along Firehole Lake Drive where we saw several more geysers including White Dome Geyser. From there we continued driving and saw several cool features from the road.

We eventually arrived at the Yellowstone Falls areas and spent an hour eating lunch and doing some shopping. After that we drove over to the very crowded Lower Yellowstone Falls parking area. The area was a zoo and took about ten minutes to secure a parking spot. Once we were parked we spent a couple of hours hiking along the rim and also hiked to the top of the lower falls. The area was very crowded but most people are slow and easy to pass. Once we had our fill we returned to the car and started the return to Jackson Hole. We timed it just right because a moderate rain fell on our drive back.

Our short trip to Yellowstone was over. The geysers and hot springs are amazing and I’m so glad we made the trip up here. Yes it crowded but it’s worth it. Just park off the road and spend the five extra minutes hiking to the start of the attractions. It’s well worth your time and effort.

Had to take Sylvia on the good ol' Old Faithful walking boardwalk tour since she'd never been to Yellowstone before. Me personally, I'd rather avoid the crowds, but I guess you [i]have[i] to do it once!

Hiked the loop to Morning Glory pool and back ...winter makes this an interesting hike. Saw 3-4 geysers erupt into the cold winter morning (Old faithful, Grotto, Castle Geyser, I think Grand ..). Saw a few bison near old faithful as well early on. Made for a nice brisk hike in the morning
