I returned to Lost Canyon after several previous visits to explore a set of Sinaguan cliff dwellings that I found two weeks prior. I was in a hurry that day, finding the location at the end of the day just before I needed to start hiking out to head home. It was a steep climb up to the ruins, and my hiking partner waited below while I climbed up to explore the canyon the day we first visited. After confirming we'd found the ruins, I wanted to bring her back to see them and spend a little more time there myself.

We heard thunder to our west on the hike in and wondered if we might end up waiting out a thunderstorm at the ruins, but the rain missed us. Knowing the location this time shortened the hike substantially, though I did miss the initial unmarked turn off the trail on my first attempt despite being there so recently. Oops...should have loaded the GPS route I'd recorded on the previous visit. But we got back on track quickly, and after a climb, we reached the ruins.

This site, spread along a canyon wall, has some unique features that I hadn't seen at many of the other cliff dwelling sites around Sedona. There are multiple pictograph panels along the canyon walls of various figures, animals, shapes, and symbols, painted in a range of reds, yellows, and browns. There's also a large hole carved into the ground, which I've read is a cist, a storage pit where natives stored grain, covering the hole with a large, flat rock to protect it from animals. Portions of the canyon wall have moss/ferns growing out of cracks where water was seeping out--possibly a natural water source for the original inhabitants.

There are two main cliff dwellings, both with low walls and an open frame for the entrances. The main cliff dwelling site has more pictographs, and further down the canyon wall is an area where more structures may have existed, but it looks part of the wall/overhang collapsed at some point, burying whatever might have been there in rubble. Overall, a very interesting site, and one the lesser-known cliff dwelling locations in the area.

Return to Lost Canyon this week. This time we drove up FS152 to the Brin's Mesa trail and started from there to see if we could connect up with where we left off last week. Made a side trip to the upper ruins. As stated before, it takes some effort to get there. Observed the lower ruins from the cliff side high above. Continued around on the easy to follow trail and did make it all the way to where we left off last week. There are some sketchy sections, but nothing as terrible as we had imagined. Turned back and followed a side trail down the mesa to FS152 and followed the road back to the Jeep. Didn't see a single person on the trail and we were the sole vehicle at the trail head.

Took the harem up to Sedona to check out PreskitJim's Lost Canyon Loop. Parked at Mescal trailhead and took Chuckwagon Trail over to Devil's Bridge trail. We started relatively early so the people traffic was still low on Devil's Bridge. Headed east on a well defined trail off Devil's Bridge for our start to the Lost Canyon Loop. Trail predictably faded as we gained distance from the attraction. Wasn't long before trail was impossible to find at places, GPS track kept us going in the right direction. All 6 of us were shedding blood before long pushing our way through brush and getting poked by cactus and agave. Made it to the eastern most saddle with spectacular views down to Soldier's Pass and Brin's Mesa trails. Found a trail that headed southeast down in to the valley, may have to return to see if it connects up to Soldier's Pass trail. Another trail heads up into the rock formations (north), hard to find the start, but well defined heading up. After some exploring we continued on Lost Canyon Loop, now heading west along the shelf. The shelf trail gets pretty narrow and off camber. Gallydoll and I tried to push through the brush above, but the rest of the crew revolted and we ended turning back to retrace our steps. I think we had a harder time trailfinding on the way back then we did on the way in! Devil's Bridge was now under a full onslaught of visitors and we found ourselves pushing our way though the masses. Hot day, 86 degrees back at the trailhead. 50 cent Frosty's at Wendys in Oak Creek for post hike treats!

This turned out to be a really nice hike. Jim wanted to do a hike in Sedona during his visit to AZ over the holiday. He suggested Wilson Mt., but I had already done that in 2005, before the fire. I did some cursory research and saw the Brins Mesa was centrally located, and gave access to several other trails I've never done. In particular, the Lost Canyon hike looked very intriguing. We decided to hike up to Lost Canyon from the lower end of the Brins Mesa Trail, and then complete the Brins Mesa-Soldier's Pass Loop on our way back.

When we got to the parking lot, there was only one other vehicle, a semi creepy looking white van that was unattended. We agreed to ignore this and got ready for the colder than normal temps for Phoenix we were about to encounter.

I think the first mile I hiked was the fastest I did all day, about 20 minutes. I was still a little tired, but the cold weather was motivation to keep moving to warm up. By the time we got to the high point on Brins Mesa, I had removed my hoodie and gloves. This lasted until about 300 yards later as we started to descend and the cold began to bite back quickly. The direct sunlight didn't hit us much due to some cloud cover, but on the top of the mesa, there were great views to the north.

We got to the end of the Brins Mesa Trail in under 2 hours, and then headed up the Lost Canyon trail. That quickly became steep and required some effort to get up. At one point I decided to take a rest and turned around to see some really stunning views. Once we got to the level section, the views were even better, expanding from the north to the west and southwest. It was also where the canyon begins to narrow and the trail threads the wall and cliff. On our way in, we spotted a whitetail buck, which was very quickly spooked by our presence and bolted past us up high above the trail with no problem. Jim and Jamie both got pictures, I was too slow on the draw.

As we got to the end of the canyon, and the end of the trail (probably), we spotted the lower ruins, which are actually way below the trail. There was only one ruin we could spot, and to get a decent view of it, you had to get uncomfortably close to the rounded edge of the cliff, which also had scree.

After we got our views of the lower ruin, we decided to head up to the upper ruins, which you can see from the trail. It looks fairly easy to get to, but is actually just a bit more difficult than it looks in a couple sections, especially coming back down. The upper ruins were a bit underwhelming, but it was still nice to do some scrambling and make a bit more of an adventure out of it. We didn't stay long as a storm was rolling in and we couldn't tell whether to expect rain or snow. Just before our descent, we noticed the first few snow flurries of the day.

On the way back on the Brins Mesa Trail, we took the Soldier's Pass Trail, and from there the hordes were en masse. Even saw some mountain bikers that were probably in wilderness area. The Devil's Kitchen as the junction of the Soldier's Pass and Jordan Trials was very interesting to see, and not expected. the Cibola Pass Trail gave us an unexpected and not very welcome additional 200' of AEG, but soon after we were at the trailhead, with some snow flurries rolling in.

We had hoped to have a late lunch at the Oak Creek Brewery and Grill on our way back, but the traffic and crowds were insane. We made a cursory check of the parking lot and found Costco-like conditions, so we decided on Plan B, which was the Verde Brewing Company in Camp Verde. Decent enough food and good beer. Got home before sunset, rarity in late December on a long road trip and hike.

Stiller picked a good one. The scenery was spectacular, and the snow flurries were an added bonus. I was by how many people we saw on the second half of the hike because it was still very cold. I enjoyed seeing the Arizona cypress. The conditions were not good for photography, but I think I managed to get a few good ones. A good time was had by all as usual.
I highly recommend the Bullpen Bourbon Beef Sandwich at Verde Brewing.

This is the first of three trip to Sedona in the past couple weeks. It might turn out to be four or five trips, by the time I catch up with my triplogs.
I took a friend up to Sedona to do some hiking. We first hiked Soldiers Pass Trail. We turned around at the Brins Mesa trail, and headed back down to the arches. We spend 2 1/2 hours at the arches. We then hiked back to the truck and headed to the Lost Canyon Trail. We hiked to the ruins and explored the area for a while.

Started the day at Devil's Bridge and came over to finish the day with Lost Canyon. Drive up Vultee Arch road was much easier than I was expecting, easier than Schnebly Hill Road for sure, except with many more people wandering all over the place. The people problem cleared up after the Devil's Bridge trail crossing. Trail was plenty easy to follow up to the ruins (below), we turned back at this point. Steep climb to get up on the mesa and easy, beautiful hike along the rim from there. Truly, the highlight of the day!

Hike with my son and his GF to get to the ruin from the canyon floor. I've been wanting to photograph the ruin at night lit with flashlights and a long exposure. Well, the route along the wash was a little more difficult than I expected, and although we were prepared with headlamps, flashlights and a lantern, I didn't feel comfortable hiking out in full darkness. We took some twilight pics and my son got to play with his new hammock, then we headed out.

FYI: Dry Creek Road-FR 152, is closed at the junction with 152c. The wet weather has caused severe road damage with deep drainages and big rocks. A high clearance 4x4 would be needed for it now. I don't know when the FS will attempt to repair it, or if they ever will, now that they can't collect Red Rock fees in that area since there are no improvements out there (picnic tables, toilets, etc.) that the court ruled necessary for fee collection. Plan on walking all the way in for any of the hikes in this area--Secret Mountain, Brins Mesa, Devils Bridge, etc.

Checked out Lost Canyon--it was the perfect temperature for Sedona area hiking, keeping in mind that I live in Flagstaff and can't handle the heat! There were a few other cars in the parking lot, but I didn't see a soul until a group of new agers hiked the canyon bottom to the little house. They made alot of noise all the way up, then tried to play flute music at the house, but I think the tape player was low on batteries! I continued up canyon, trying to reach the end, but didn't make it (no trail, thick vegetation). Then I took the trail around the other side of the canyon for a ways, just to check out the view. On the way back to the Jeep, I gave the "staircase" some maintenance (trail karma).

Hike was moderate with a short stint of more difficulty during a 450-foot incline. The ruins at the top were amazing to explore - estimated to be 700 yrs old, you can still see the finger prints in the mortar between rocks. Walk a little farther to the Vee in the canyon, and you can see a more preserved ruin below. Saw rattlesnake under rock on way back.

Got lost coming down the mountain - while descending the steep 450-foot decline, needed to pay better attention to the cairns. Found our way back eventually.

Temperature was perfect - approximately 80 degrees. We started around 9:30am. Took about an hour of hiking time round trip, plus time exploring the ruins.

I'm guessing on the date on this one.

Heading in I didn't know there was a trail into the area. I parked where the ravine meets the road. If memory serves me right it's a pretty knarly etched ravine by the road. Maybe that's what got my attention so I decided to explore up canyon.

The ravine heading up is a subtle dry creek bed that's easy to negotiate. The tree coverage is fantastic! I recall passing two guys camping in the creek. They were pretty scarry looking dudes but friendly as could be.

When I first laid eyes on the perfect mini scale ruin I was in awe. That pretty much sealed the deal, mountain biking just didn't have the rewards hiking does.

Heading back I decided to avoid the toothless twins and headed into the forest on the North I think? I came upon the trail, which likely criss crosses the creek but believe I trudged outward. Explored several other areas that day as that was my routine back then to just go wherever!

Two years later Robert Stone published the hike in a small black book as Lost Canyon. The name may have been conceived fifty years earlier, I'm not sure.

It's a nice short hike to combine with others in the area.
