I'd guess that every Arizona outdoor enthusiast has a bucket list ready for days like today. Well, one of the many on my list was this hike. The forecast was for a break in the recent hot temperatures. The day did not disappoint. Almost perfect, except for those pesky gnats! I had three goals on this hike. The first was to find Mel's bandana she had lost on our previous trip to Hayes Peak. The second was to not get bit by a viper. The final goal was linking up three of the Sierra Estrella's main summits. I closely followed our previous route and quickly found the lost bandana, so after that I was elated to put the phone away, transitioning into sheep mode and trying to step up the pace. Hayes Peak didn't seem that difficult, as well as most of the traverse south towards Montezuma Sleeping. There surprisingly were well-worn sheep trails in many places on the ridgeline and remnants of the 1945 plane crash. Nearing the north side of MS though, the topography became more challenging and didn't really let up at all until Quartz Peak. I saw one large ram below me when ascending MS. He quickly distanced himself from me with what seemed like very minimal effort. An old friend gave me some advice about this ridgeline, stating that it's best to stay on the ridgeline proper. I tried to keep to that great advice, except the last three very rocky peaks before reaching Quartz seemed tough to go over, so I traversed the northeast side of them. It was a jenky, grueling bushwhack to say the least. If (unlikely) I repeat this route, I'd try it CCW, up the Quartz Peak trail first and try to crest those three peaks when fresher in the hike. This is a more difficult hike. It would be insane to attempt this without prior experience hiking. : wink :

Desert reacquaintance at a mellow pace to catch up with Mel and soak up the beautiful and unique terrain. Didn't seem like a beastly hike considering it's low mileage, but the wind was really intense on the ridgeline and summit, where we had a pleasant interaction with the guy monitoring the Ring camera. He asked us to close his kegerator lid that had been blown open by the high winds. Consequently, we had to descend the summit to the leeward north slope of the ridgeline to enjoy our beers and white chocolate. On the sunny descent, we only encountered one shy viper and a bunch of black lizards.

linda invited me to hike estrella peak, one that i had wanted to do again even though i knew what we were in for
set out in shade and cool temps around 0830
level ground for maybe a half mile, then a boulder field until getting into the main drainage
lots of bursera trees in the drainage
a steep ascent, but good footing on granite boulders and slabs until near the ridgeline
maybe a quarter mile of loose steep brushy terrain to a saddle
we followed the ridgeline from there, which was much better hiking
junky summit, but we took a break up top for snacks and photos
great 360 degree views and decently clear air
headed back down the ridgeline, then took a slightly better line back to the drainage
i brought a hiking pole, but i don't think it was worth carrying for that quarter mile section
downclimbed the drainage, and seemed to avoid some of the boulder field on the return
it was nice to walk on level ground by the time we were done
thanks for the invite, linda - a tough but fun hike and nice to do it again

I’ve had this one on the list for a while, and asked Kelly if she’d be interested in joining me. Got to the start about 0830 and headed out into a field of cholla. After the cholla, there was a boulder field. Once into the drainage, the hiking became more enjoyable. The drainage got progressively steeper as we climbed over and around boulders and slabs of rock. Abundant bursera trees lined the drainage, and were quite fragrant. Grippy shoes were a blessing.

The drainage more or less disappeared shortly before reaching the ridge, and that short section between the two was the worst part of the hike. Very steep, with loose rock—getting to the ridge was a relief. After that, we followed the ridge up to the summit, still steep in places, but not as loose, and there was even a faint path in places. Great views from up top, where we took a nice snack break. We were surprised to see the very top of a snow covered Humphreys Peak (or maybe Agassiz) far off on the horizon, confirmed by checking the PeakFinder app.

Descending the ridge was fine, and we spotted some cairns heading off the ridge. Following those cairns got us on a slightly better track between the ridge and drainage—still slow going, but more stable rock. Coming down the drainage was tedious at times, but overall fun. Boulder field was meh, but we found a nice path through the cholla.

We drove in from the south, driving past the landfill. Good road (although sandy) all the way until shortly north of Riggs. After that, a solid medium clearance, preferably high, and at least AWD is recommended, as there are some deep ruts. I forgot to bring a pole, which was okay since I don’t think it would have been much help in most places. Great day, and glad to get this hike done. Thanks for joining me, Kelly!

Was gonna do this one today, but bomb cyclone predictions and airline scheduling made me switch my trip back east a day early and that necessitated hitting this one yesterday instead.

We got started at a delightfully relaxed noon-thirty after I got all my morning chores done at home. We drove in from the north, and the wash/road was sandy and featured a bunch of in n outs. A careful sedan can probably still do it, but it wouldn't be too enjoyable.

NGL, I forgot what a beast this hike is. Temps were delightfully in the 50s but it's just a relentlessly steep climb that only gets steeper! I had done the time math from previous trips and we were falling woefully behind the plan. Even with my previous routes loaded, a couple of times we angled up a wrong drainage for a short stretch before correcting back. It ended up taking 3hrs to summit.

My plan to also bag the spectacularly rugged 4232 next door was thwarted by daylight and I was properly excoriated by Matt for my failure. The direct-return took less time than the climb, but it's no walk in the park either. The lower mile always seems to last forever.

Back at the truck we enjoyed a celebratory beverage as the sun set to the west and annoyed with the drive in, I opted for the "easier" exit to the south. Previously I've thought the south route is a better option, but with current conditions, I can't say that at all. Besides west-side traffic which is nice to avoid, the actual dirt drive is easier, in better shape, and quicker from the north. But this allowed us to grab dinner in Maricopa which you should do ... once.

I still love this hike, but hopefully next time I'll remind myself ahead of time what a beast of a day it is.

This has been on my peak list for a while, and I figured that today was as good a day as any to do it.

We drove in from the south, following the @rwstorm driving track. My hiking buddy drove his CRV, and I would not go in anything less than something like that.

We followed a wash and drainage up to a ridgeline, and then took the ridgeline to the peak. This seems to be the way that most people hike it.

I thought that this was a tough, physically demanding hike. I'm not a big fan of boulder filled washes, which is what this one was for a mile or so. At one point we climbed up boulders and rocks to the tune of over 1,700 feet of elevation gain in one mile.

I was glad to get this one done, but I doubt if I will do an encore on it.

Ended up that this was my 4th major summit of an Estrella Range Peak this year; Quartz and both Montezuma Peaks done earlier this year. The 3rd time up here is getting stale, nothing new, and the route got easier. The other off trail hikes were more interesting. New usually is. So much water around, in the air, it's like south Georgia. Also, some large pools and trickling areas in the middle canyon.

Next time I drive out here, I'm finally hiking to Butterfly Peak.

Probably my last big hike of the year. I'm not one to only do desert hikes in winter, and in general I prefer it warmer and with a longer day, but today had really nice conditions to hike Estrella Peak. The air was much cleaner this time. Visible snow on the Catalinas. Hiking up I took the wrong canyon early on and ended up meeting the ridge west of the summit. This canyon is much harder than the other way, I thought, but I was able to go up it. I came down the usual slope.

Parked in the same spot as last time, but I see the stats are updated and higher than before, I think. I won't be changing them to reflect my now lower year old hike stats, even if I did more road walking than the GPS.

I had an itch that needed to be scratched. The calendar hasn't been on my side for this one, but the cooler weather this weekend allowed for reasonable conditions early in the day. The whole climb is shaded for the first couple of hours after sunrise and the temps once on the top section were pleasant, with a cool breeze.

On the return trip, the drainage was shaded until I hit the 2800 foot contour at about 8:30. The last hour or so was in the sun which got increasingly warm. Still, it was only 77 when I reached the truck. Not terrible, but I'm glad I started when I did. Mid May mornings in the upper 50s are to be enjoyed!

I changed from a Quartz Peak revisit to this a few days ago when I decided something new would be more fun. This is definitely a much harder hike, and more interesting save for the antenna studded summit. The Estrellas are my favorite range to view from town, so this was one I had to do. Progress was slower than expected, and I am impressed Todd and others have done it so fast, but they likely were not out doing it on a day pushing towards 100. I needed at least another liter with me. After my summer of hiking in heat and cooler temps of varying lengths, I know the way I felt was a result of dehydration.

Either way, I followed a route up the gully that matches Todd's route the closest, and added in some stats for the road walking as I stopped for some road erosion and found a nice place to park near a tower with a bird nest up top. The air is very, very dirty, even the White Tanks were hard to see. Is this California Smoke?

Travel is pretty easy in the boulder and bed rock gully, a little bit harder on the desert below, and substantially harder on the upper slope which appears to have eroded badly from heavy rains. Moving around thorny everything and loose rock on the ridge is just irritating. The summit is an impressive one for the height, so that was nice. I just wish the air was clear. I can see me coming back to do this again someday, but Quartz is a lot easier, and I would want cooler weather with clean air.

We went up basically the way the route description says...on the way down one of the group and I took a detour to the peak just west of the high point. The climb up there was way more thrilling and rewarding than the actual high point.

We started at 9am...it was too hot for me by 1pm when we started down. We each carried at least a gallon of water and found it was not quite enough...starting to be concerned about snakes too...I may be retiring from desert hikes for the next 10 months or so. We'll see...

still a great time in the hills

This was a super-fun mountain to climb. Can't believe I haven't done it before, but I will definitely do it again! Some of the surrounding peaks look great too. Now I know why JJ has been back a few times.

The drainage is a real treat to climb. Solid granite with a bunch of scrambling and small climbs. The top of the drainage gets a little loose, but nothing terrible. It's steep. HAZ Tracks gave me a 1-mile split over 1700 feet aeg. :o

The summit is littered with video cameras. I counted at least 8, and kept seeing more every time I looked another direction. :scared:

I was expecting it to be warm today, but it was in the mid 30s on the drive in, and near 50 to start. All shade until reaching the saddle at the false summit and then crazy windy. Actually had to put long sleeves back on. The sun was warm on the way down but ducked in and out of clouds so it was no big deal.

Thanks to Bob for the rare Christmas ale! It was delicious :y:

The road closure mentioned in the Quartz Peak description is still there, but anybody can drive through it no problem at all. It's even nicer than Empire Blvd!

I got invited to do this hike on 2/7 but I'll be coaching that day. It was also a group of 14 going and I'm not into that wilderness orgy scene.

Anyways, I really didn't know anything about this hike but figured it was a new peak :y: . I invited Chums only because he haz a 4wd truck ;) . The drive in wasn't too bad and we headed up in cool temps.

My first time hiking in the area and as we were heading up, I was thinking...I want to do that...and that...and that. The ravine up was nice and steep and the views looking back down were sweet.

The top was filled with lots of equipment and cameras and one fan that was working hard. The other fans were either union or just plain lazy. The views from up top were exceptional and because of the air quality we could see a long ways. Summit brew was tasty.

On the way down, we saw a chipmunk...some lizards...and some bees.

Fun hike

I woke up in my warm sleeping bag to a nice crisp, cool morning at the base of the Estrella Mountains. Crawling out of my tent like some primitive creature and pulling my boots on, I stood up to be faced with some awesome views of a crescent moon hovering the silhouette of the ridgeline I hoped to climb that day. Two friends and I planned to ascend a trail-less wash up to a ridgeline walk to the highest point in the Estrella Mountains nicknamed Hayes Peak. Those of you who don’t like bushwhack trails or obtaining special permission from Indian reservations need not apply!

After sunrise we ate breakfast, strapped on our packs, and headed out from our campsite not knowing what the day had in store for us. The road we initially started to walk towards the mountain soon disappeared into a system of washes. We walked about 100 feet east of the old road and dumped into the wash that would eventually take us to the ridge. We hopped, jumped, climbed, and scrambled up, around, and across rocks endlessly, all the while attempting to avoid spiked trees, spiny cacti, and other thick brush attempting to hold us back from reaching our goal. We kept at it, taking a few breaks in the shade of the rocks, passing jokes about how it takes a special kind of person to think that this form of torture was actually enjoyable! Scratched, sweaty, and bruised, we pushed towards the ridge.

The wash is pretty constant in its gain and bushwackiness (yup that’s a technical term). Towards the ridge line, however, we banked west to climb the last couple hundred feet or so, which proved to be less than forgiving. My good friend’s fiancé decided to call her limit at this point and turn back (don’t get me wrong, way tough chick, did I mention 6 months pregnant?). They headed down, leaving the peak bagging to me. I jetted up to the ridge and pushed hard to cover the last 1.5 miles to the peak. I’ll admit this was not an easy feat; tons of grueling inclines, cactus dodging, and beaming sun to make the last push a challenge.
Traversing the ridgeline I came across a big horned sheep. Unfortunately, this guy met an end by what one could only imagine to be one killer life out in the wild. The horns were massive and had almost a full 360 curl; he was definitely a big boy! Even though he wasn’t alive, I had evidence that they lived here in the Estrella Mountains. I instantly put my head on a swivel looking for predators in the area as I trekked on. Up, up, up I pushed until finally reaching the peak with a small tower station and multiple sets of solar panels. The view of South Mountain and Phoenix was strange from this point but wonderful to see. With killer views all around, I snapped some quick pics and decided to jet back down to meet my friends. On the way back I eyeballed a beastly peak to the southwest of Hayes (not sure of the name but stands at 4232) that looked as though it may require some rope to reach summit. If I only had more time…

Hauling butt I got to the point where I popped out onto the ridge in just 2 hours. I bombed back down the wash to catch my friends. About 1/3 of the way down, I was surprised to find them so soon! They were taking their time, being very meticulous and calculated about their route (and for good reason). We, the 3 amigos, traversed the rest of the wash back down the same route to the truck with the sun setting in front of us. Another end to a good hike! The only obstacle left was to drive the slow eight miles back to Riggs road and on home. Using a weekend to spend time in the mountains with good friends…nothing can be better!

I've got some writer's block tonight, so I'll post a block of text. Wordplay.

Parked at 33.249479 -112.300466 to save a little bit of walking. I took the same route as Kelly and Johnlp, just with a different starting point. johnr1 and I also used the same wash on our descent in 2012 - thought about that trip a lot today. The wash seems to be the best route up, in my opinion. A couple bypasses were required (subjective), but it's very straightforward. I passed a group of 4 young-ish kids (high school, I presume) on the way up. I completely forgot about driving by their vehicle on the way in. The wind really picked up once I was exposed on and around the ridges. Reached the peak in either 2h 15m or 2h 35m. What a wonderful feeling to finally get this one taken care of. Took the same route down. Had to bee-line once because of some Bs that weren't there on the way up. I can't lie, the last mile or so I just wanted the hike to be over. The bottom of my left foot developed a nickel-sized blister and I was tired of hopping over boulders. It really warmed up once the cloud cover was gone.

This peak has been on my list for quite some time. I have missed out on a couple of opportunities to hike it with JJ. trekkin gecko and I stayed in the wash as much as possible which seemed like a good choice. A good stretch of the climb is through brushless slick rock, which was a surprise. Off trail in the Estrellas can be very demanding. Loose and steep.

The scenery both near and far is quite nice. The air was pretty clear, but midday isn't good for long distance pictures. We thought we could see all the way west to Kofa.

The peak itself is full of communication equipment. Nothing special except the awesome views. Somebody put a new register in a cairn near the summit.

Very fun hike, though relentless once it starts getting steep. Best done during the cooler months, but short enough to hike anytime of year if you bring enough water.

Thanks for providing the transportation gecko and the great company. :)

estrella peak has been on my wish list for awhile
highest point in the sierra estrellas and a challenging off trail hike
hooked up with lp for the attempt this morning
kind of a long drive for it, but a worthy peak
the road in was sandy and washboarded, but we thought a sedan or a van could make it
after turning left where you turn right for quartz, the road became rocky and rutted
a couple of challenging spots, but high clearance is enough
found the powerline pole for jj's route and began the hike around 8:00 or so
(right off the bat i dropped my camera and dented one of the metal telescoping rings
it wouldn't open at first, but i somehow pushed it back in line with my fingernail
please forgive the new speck of dust on a couple of my photos)
the first part of the hike was through flat desert without much vegetation to avoid
we soon entered a large drainage and began gaining elevation
found a very nice path with slickrock and very little brush
steep with some fun scrambling
this continued to within about a quarter mile of a ridgeline, where we found the loose rock and scree that we thought we might be fighting the entire hike
plenty of elevation yet to gain from this saddle/ridgeline
on the ascent, we sidestepped below the ridge for awhile, then on the descent went straight down the ridgeline, which was the better path
good views from the final ridge push, with relatively easy hiking
great to gain the high point, but the actual summit is not aesthetically pleasing, with a solar panel, communication equipment and all kinds of junk
excellent views of the white tanks, seven mile range, south mountain, the west side of the valley and the estrella ridgeline
very rugged terrain
spent a few minutes looking around, then descended back to where we dropped down the drainage and had a snack
the loose rock part only lasted about 10-15 minutes and we were soon back in the drainage
fun downclimbs and boulder hopping
ended up exiting a bit too far north, so walked back to my truck on the road
it might have been better to park one power pole to the north
thoughts:
this hike was way more fun than i had been anticipating
we both thought it would be kind of a grind
most of it was very enjoyable even though a good challenge
not sure why it isn't done more often, unless some keep it to themselves, or the drive is discouraging
thought this might be a one-and-done, but i'd definitely do it again
a very cool peak
would like to get out this way again yet this spring for quartz
thanks for doing this one with me, john :)

Grueling, Intense, Rugged, Serene, Enlightening... These are all words that describe the Sierra Estrella Ridgeline. Today I continued on my quest to traverse the entire range. Today's hike covered the section from where Spiderlegs (James) and I stopped heading south, then I hit Hayes Peak, and continued on to where JohnLP and I dropped down.

For those wanting to do this one I can't stress enough to do it on a cooler day and expect it to be a long one. There is no such thing as speed travel anywhere on this ridgeline. The journey was worth every step and every drop of blood.

I started out just before 9am and headed out following the track I made in Route Manager. Up I went to the last place I had been. Along the way I found several pottery shards. Up on the range I found my mylar balloon marker from where I last stopped. Then it was game on. I headed across the ridgeline making sure to stay as close to it as physically possible. I only cliffed out once. Along the way I would hit all the high points just for good measure. As I was heading towards Hayes Peak (Sierra Estrella Peak to some) I found a cave where someone had been digging several years ago. Shovel and bucket were still inside.

In time I hit the high point and then made my way over to my stopping spot on the other end. JohnLP and I had hiked to this point from Quartz Peak last year. Once there it was time to head down a side ridge to the road and then back to the Jeep. On the way down I took a tumble. I did a full end over end and smacked my elbow and knee really hard. I lay on the ground for a minute making sure all was okay. Yep just blood and bruises so back to traveling down I went. I finally made it to the road at 5pm and then it was a breezy two miles back to my starting point.

I am not one to take tons of photos but somehow I ended up with 150 on this trip. I looked through them and was going to narrow it down to 15 or so. When looking at them I realized that this trip was one to a place rarely visited. With that in mind I am posting several for you to enjoy and experience today's Sierra Estrella Ridgeline Odyssey with me.

I have now traversed from the Estrella Regional Park all the way to Montezuma Peak south. From there to the southern end is all that remains. :D

Was headed out to hike Quartz Peak this afternoon. Took a left when I should have taken a right. Somehow ended up here. That's my story and I'm sticking to it! ;)

P.S. I included a GPS track in case anyone else were to get lost and end up here.
