Temps had cooled down a little bit so I figured I’d check this out while in the area. I was hoping to get to the “waterfall” area as described by others but quickly was reminded I hiked 20 miles yesterday… I kept taking lots of break so figured I’d turn back as it was getting warm. Hardly any water in any of the keeper holes. It’s certainly worth doing if you’re in the area and looking to get away from the crowds. Cooled off in Oak Creek after.

I missed my visit to this one last year. This time I called in sick to my dumb boss and played hooky at work on a Thursday. Son’s #2 and #3 came along.

The colors started right away with all of the wild grapes along the wash floor. The higher up we went, the nicer the colors.

We had good luck with the weather as it was cloudy/partly cloudy all day. They were moving fast, so the light and shadows were constantly changing.

The usual boulder-hopping, but no giant pools to navigate this year.

We hiked in a couple of miles and started back down.

It is always a treat to visit this place and the autum colors definitely cooperated too.

We noticed they have contructed some earthen steps made with railroad ties right next to the bridge too.

We came across 3 hikers near the start in the way out. Otherwise, we had the entire place to ourselves. That was a little different experience that we had at our next stop a the West Fork/Call it the Canyon circus.

Pumphouse wash. Amazing vegetation. Stunning rock formations. And in the fall breathtaking color. I enjoyed it thoroughly. But some notes. All obvious, but noted just for the record.

• Check weather. Like any narrow canyon, don’t want to be there in a flash flood.
• Not a trail. A fairly obvious fact readily seen in any photo.
• Not a stroll. Even though only moderate elevation gain, rugged conditions.
• Not smooth. Constant climbing over large boulders. Again fairly obvious from any photo.
• No real parking. Find a small pullout wherever. Or a dirt road.
• Not for small kids or small animals. May have strength/agility, but gaps up and between boulders likely too large.
• Not for sedate companion. Bummer if that companion just decides the effort is too much and wants to turn back.
• No way a substitute for West Fork. One can meander easy up West Fork; one must work hard up Pumphouse.

With all that said, if one is ready and able, well worth it. Likely if you are a constant user of this site, no issue. Actually quite fun.

And thanks to my partner for again extending my hiking repertoire.

It's been many moons since I have visited this amazing place. I decided to head up to this area and sneak in a visit while the fall colors are still on display.

The trail is the same as always, a boulder-hopping wander up and down the wash.

I came across three groups of climbers who were scaling the walls on both sides of canyon near the start. Looked like lot of merriments were had by all there.

I also came across 4 other groups of hikers. 2 had been in there before. The other two were first timers. I am reluctant to post photos about this hike, and I know I will never provide gps information or geo-tag my photos, but here I am now, adding my 2 cents to this hidden (for now) gem. :(

Driving up to the parking, we passed 100's of cars and great throngs of the masses parked all along 89A converging on the West Fork area. I don't want to be the guy that breaks the dam at this location. I can imagine 100's (or more) marching up and down this place in the future and that is depressing for sure. I fear that reality is only a matter of time as more and more people have discovered that it's actually fun to go out and experience nature. Not that I begrudge them, but I remember all of these amazing places before the advent of social media. A bit selfish on my part, but I really don't want all of these places overrun and the experience that these places used to provide lost forever. Wishful thinking on my part.

I'd never done this one from this end before and it seemed to be a good time to check it out. We got an afternoon start after another hike earlier in the day and passed a couple of groups and some people we knew who were all finishing up as we got started. Another few were climbing within the typical 1/4 mile maximum approach that only us muggles can survive going beyond. From there it was just us and the resident wildlife.

Of course, I'm reluctant to post photos of this lovely place but I'll do it anyway. Such is my definition of reluctance   .

Despite the picturesque scenes, it's a very challenging place to hike, and the constant boulder hopping and unsteady footing was brutal and left me completely exhausted after 3 hours. Some things are worth the effort though.

Water flowing here would be nice, but would also likely limit travel significantly as there are several narrow slots that would make for icy cold swimmers. So I'll take the ankle rolling boulder hopping exactly for what it is.

One to Many...

The one decision, where to hike was easy. The many decisions--navigating the boulders took a bit more thinking.

The weather was beautiful, drifting clouds and light breezes. Prior rainfall filled the many canyon tubs and rock catchments-- adding to the interest without limiting us in any way. There are triplogs detailing swimming and other water maneuvers during various times of the year. We did not confront any difficult water workarounds during our hike.

We helped each other through the keyhole opening in the eight foot wall. I guess some hikers, with better "free solo" skills, may be able to grab and hold and hoist their way through on their own. I recommend the friend help method as these "cliffhanger" moments strengthen the bond between friends and make great video moments as well.

After the keyhole climb through, the upcoming sandstone ledges offered plenty of get-by over the collected water to continue through this remarkable wash.

A couple of hawks overhead and tadpoles in the water was the extent of the wildlife. A few flowers and yes, the turn of leaves along the route added to the beauty.

One other hiker (well, you could tell by his outfit he was a climber) in five hours of hiking. On our return, we heard voices echoing down from nearby rappelling. We were not reacquainted to further sounds of civilization until the turn to the exit and the noise from cars crossing the bridge signaled the end of the hike.

In reading this triplog, I feel I have not said enough about the boulder and rock hopping. It is start to finish. Unrelenting really. Also, not sure if there is a way to automatically insert the flood warning with steep canyon walls, so I am compelled to add it here.

We completed the HAZ official route plus a tad further but not much— recording our hike at around 5 miles. Plan on an hour per mile and perhaps longer for other navigation and photo stops.

If you have one day and if not many, but a few good friends to join you, this hike is a worthy venture to add to the list.

Headed to Sedona with a friend in hopes of snow and adventure. Snow was forecasted starting late morning and would build as the day progressed. We would spend the day exploring Mescal Mountain, Fay Canyon and Pumphouse Wash.

We started off at the Long Canyon TH and started a CCW loop around Mescal Mountain. We checked out a couple of alcoves and looped around. The views were nice and dark clouds were developing. We completed the loop and then drove over to Fay Canyon. We headed up that canyon and bypassed the arch, we've both been there before, and topped out near the end of the trail sign. During this time a light snow started falling.

After Fay, we ate lunch and then headed up 89A. We opted for Pumphouse Wash. At this point, this entire area had a solid dusting of snow. We parked right outside the wash and headed in. It was slow as we enjoyed this amazing canyon. We took a variety of pics and went about a mile in. At this point it was getting late in the day and we wanted to head back.

The drive home turned into an adventure. We headed north for the I-17 and snow started falling again. We hit the I-17 and found a standstill for miles and miles. We ultimately turned around and headed back down 89A and got home at least two hours later than we should have. Despite this, it was a really nice day. We were a tad early for the snow but got a small taste. This would develop into a solid storm over the next few days.

Quick stop off the 89A to check the flow at the confluence of Sterling Canyon and Pumphouse Wash. There's high water right now, as to be expected from seasonal precipitation. It covers Pumphouse Canyon from wall to wall. Several of the normally dry tributaries were flowing fairly well (see photo). Definitely worth a stop this time of year, if you're in the area.

Super-Duper-Bouldery. Bring some comfy shoes and be prepared for extensive rock hopping. Also, bug spray comes in handy. Parts of this hike that are a bit bush wacky with thorny plants so long pants may be wise. Actually LL recommended zip off pants because there was one area that required walking though water.

~ Eric, Bob, LL and I made pretty good from the start to the waterfall area. When we got to the waterfall we ended up spending a little more time there than planned because Eric had managed to sit on a cactus so I had to help him pull some tiny cactus spines from his bum. Bob and LL politely waited further up on the trail. The day was super humid, but otherwise the weather was perfect for this hike. I really enjoyed all the different rock features, especially the slot canyon. :) We saw lots of pools full of tadpoles and a few cute little frogs hopped by us on the boulders.

Boulders, boulders, and more boulders! This is a fun little exploration but it can be tough on the feet if you're not wearing the right shoes.

Wow, amazing!

I could make this my shortest triplog and just leave it at that but there a few stories that have to be told. First off this hike is beautiful through out. Every turn holds new wonderment and/or puzzlements. You really got to love boulder-hopping because that is throughout too. You also got to be prepared to get wet too.

With regard to getting wet, Wendi really showed her metal. The water was so cold that my body tried to mutiny when my stomach made such a strong effort not comply that it caused my diaphragm to not be able to inhale, and my floaty made a strange pop sound as the air inside began to condense, Wendi's would too later on but neither seemed to have leaks. Her turn came sooner rather than later, because if I was having this much trouble there was gonna be a war if I got all the gear across and then Wendi refused to cross. So Wendi was the first to go. I was sure she would break and save us both the pain of swimming these waters. Now there are a few things that need to be said about the pool we needed to cross: 1) Cold, probably low 60's, 2)Cloudy, couldn't see the bottom, potential crawdads, or the tiny fish that nibble at your toe-jam, 3)Buggy, Wendi hates any bugs that get near her face. Any of these afflictions have individually have ruled out ,for her going near water in the past much less put a toe, or worse her whole body in there. We had already stared at the buggy hole for 45 minutes trying to get up the courage before I made my attempt, imagine my shock when she boldly took the plunge, diving on to her floaty. Then even more shocking that there was no about-face, she just kept going. !@#$%, now I had to go!

The first crossing ended up being three trips back and forth trying to get all the gear across. But once a system developed, we were able to get everything across in pretty much on trip. A couple of sticks or later my trekking poles over the floaty's hole that it stabilized our gear high and dry. By the time I was on the other side once and for all my body was so cold it felt like it was on fire, kind a like when your arm falls asleep but only from the neck down. Being ex-Navy, I've been in cold water but this was the coldest water I have ever been in. When we regrouped, Wendi was gleaming, you could tell she was proud of herself and rightfully so. We both celebrated ourselves a little but being still in heavy shade we quickly started for the closest sunshine we could find, but that required some boulder hopping. It was a clumsy affair with wet cloths that stuck to our skin and muscles still numb but we made it safely to a place where we could warm up. Wendi's pack had no way to attach her floaty so they both got tethered to mine, I was reminded of my niece's role as the flower girl in my sisters wedding and they had made her little pixie wings to wear, not necessarily the look but more how clumsy it must feel wearing them.

We got ourselves into the sunshine and in no time we were drying out. Our clothes just about dry when we got to the second pool. This one was 3-4 times longer than the first with a ledge that ran along the right side of the pool. It got us almost to the other side but for a 3' gap. Not comfortable putting Wendi in that type of exposure we opted to do the swim. We staged all our gear on the ledge and then Wendi took the first swim again and I handed the gear down using the end of my trekking poles to extend our reach. By now too I was convinced that I could make it across the ledge but Wendi would have killed me if I skipped the swim after she had to do it so I took one for the team.

The next challenge was a 5 foot water fall. We thought there was a work around but that turned out to be a 20' drop in addition to being 10' above our heads. I ended up saying to my self "WWJBD?" Dragging a log over we put together an Indian Ladder which we were able to easily climb to the next level. The next 10 feet of travel involved leveraging our arms against the tightened walls and swinging over submerged pits that had crayfish hovering below, pincers at the ready like a game of pitfall. You do have to get a little wet but not to bad. Right here is where we had lunch, though another hundred feet would have been a prettier spot we didn't know it a the time, so we just admired what we had which like everywhere in this canyon was beautiful.

The slot canyon came next, luckily there was a work around cause I am not sure our floaties would have fit. For this an for all the work-arounds in this canyon the right/east side is your best bet. Eventually it looks like this dead ends but a short trip through the trees, around a big boulder and down a drainage that detours before hitting bottom and you are through, no swimming. Yay! The water never did seem to really warm up so we were glad for that.

We wanted to make it to James Canyon but only made it as far into the Pumphouse as where it cuts the west. We'll definitely be back to make up this fail.

Wendi had a scare while in a knee deep crossing. She saw 10" cray, lobster sized (she says) and it turned on her, daring her to come closer (she says). By the time I turned around and could handle all the "Chick" screams and splashing it was gone (like it never was).

Even scarier was the fall she took while stepping off a log to get up to the next bench. Her feet were still wet and the log was tilted causing her to slip backwards. Her lower back came down right over the log. I was certain that she broke her back but she says the only pain was a stubbed toe. I told her it looked she was getting an adjustment at one of those Asian chiro's where they throw your body at stuff.

The only wildlife we saw was a couple frogs, a fat squirrel, one bird that was a very aggressive hunter. On the way back, above the slot canyon we could hear some kind of animal making some kind of noise, very hard to describe but somewhere between a frog and gremlin... I am thinking a bird but we really couldn't tell. It would have had to have been in the water or just above it hanging on the wall of the canyon unless the echoes were playing tricks.

Cool hike, highly recommended but be ready for some swimming.

Hot day, met a lost hiker who had run out of water below the basalt falls. After giving her directions and half my water she headed back upstream. Poor monsoons this year, I live near the top of Pumphouse and frequent the area. I have never seen the pools so low this time of year.

Nice half-day out and back in a scenic canyon. Not so much hiking as boulder-hopping, with occasional pools of water, most of which can be avoided. Some minor wading.

It was Joe and Jeff that first showed me this canyon almost two years ago. This trip felt a lot easier this time with with only a few mildly technical spots. At the time I went, the raps were all new and fresh so there was nearly no set up. It was a nice afternoon trip, not very challenging and a lot of wash walking. I highly recommend following this one down through Pumphouse Wash and catching a ride back up to your car. I found Upper Pumphouse to be quite delightful!! LOL this time I was mentally prepared for the last cold swim! BURRRR!

Just getting to log my trips from weeks past.
This was a lazy Sunday spent exploring, climbing and socializing with friends. This was the second part of a rock climbers meetup in Sedona, I decided to join day 2 with Madison. She liked the boulder hopping and scrambling in this area and made friends with Liz immediately to have someone cool to emulate. (Moms are lowest on the kid cool scale)
This marks the beginning of the winter season feeling for me, I was surprised at how cold that canyon was! As the sun ducked behind the cliffs, we made the best cragfire ever! This was the first time I have ever been able to warm my fingers by a fire, before getting on the cold rock. The integrity of the sport routes in this area are questionable I wouldn't recommend this area for climbing but it was fun area and pretty to see.

Jack said it well: This is to late starts, 25 mile death marches, rock hopping, new crags, holds that blow up in your hand, climbing hard, On sights, Camp fires, little girls with big rice crispies, melty-cheese and crackers, exploding hot rocks, melted back packs, speed hiking in the dark, smelling like smoke, living the life. What a great outing.

We heard about some new routes being put up in this area, so headed on down to check it out. As of right now, we're not 100% on how well it's bolted, and it doesn't seem that epoxy was used (lots of holes where there are failed bolts). A couple people took some smaller falls and everything seems kosher so far. Found a really great route farther down the canyon as it was starting to get darker. It was pretty cold out so we built a fire (far enough down the canyon it was okay) and hung out for a while having cheese and crackers and drinking sangria. Learned to be more careful when clearing out a fire ring, as some of the uncleared volcanic rocks underneath started exploding when they got too hot. One person ended up with a hole in his pack when a rock shard landed on it and melted the material.

I didn't do any climbing thanks to the previous day's abuse, but had lots of fun watching everyone else and taking pictures and hanging out with Madison. Favorite thing that made my day: when Madison started out a sentence, "When kids your age..." haha.. so awesome. ;)

Pleasant little canyon, decent water conditions, cool and fairly clean. Dropped the technical gear at the end of James and continued on down lower Pumphouse to Oak Creek and back, great sandstone scenery in that stretch. Exited via Kelly, also very pleasant. The mountain bike trail in there is so nice I just kept hiking along it without realizing that at some point it had branched off up a side canyon, ended up too far north. Still not sure where the split was.
