This was a hike to the summit of Bowie Mountain (elevation of 6,985 feet and prominence of 1,186 feet), which is in the Chiricahua Mountains.

I started the hike at the Fort Bowie Trailhead, and along the way I checked out a few points of interest on the Fort Bowie Loop. I particularly enjoyed seeing the cemetery, Apache Spring, and the fort ruins.

Once leaving the loop, the hike to the peak was all off-trail through lots of brush and waist-high grass.

I made a very, very steep climb up to a ridgeline -- during one stretch I gained 800 feet of elevation in about 1/2 mile. In addition to the steepness, there were lots of small, loose rocks that made the climb very slippery.

Once on the ridgeline, there was lots of up-and-down on the way to the summit. I had to go up and over 3 false summits, each of which was very brushy with a good bit of class 3 climbing. I had to be patient and pick a good route through the rocks and brush. There was some exposure that was mostly avoidable.

I eventually made it to the summit and enjoyed the awesome views up there. Then I had to once again go up and over the false summits on the way back.

This turned out to be a much tougher hike than I envisioned. This seldom hiked peak is not for the casual hiker.

Hiking with my ole' buddy Lauren again ... It's been awhile!
We hiked the standard lasso loop with a side trip out to the "first" Fort Bowie.
We were both bummed that the visitor center was closed on this day (closed due to staffing issues).
Always a very cool AZ history hike with great scenery 360.

On the drive back out we made a quick stop at Indian Bread Rocks.
We only had time for a short climb up the big slab at the picnic area for a great lookie around, what a cool place!
So cool that I know we will be back for a full day to explore soon.

Am so happy to have my friend back in town, it was a fun day!

I do this at least 2-3 times per year, and it's always a great hike. Only a handful of other folks out there. Probably the best bird list I've gotten on this hike - 31 species, including at least six Townsend's Solitaires, which are having an "irruption year" in AZ this year. Also got Scaled Quail, which was a new bird for the year ... looks like I will finish the year with 246 species - two better than my previous best year!

Indian Bread Rocks - What a cool place to spend a couple hours on the way out to Fort Bowie! Talked to a BLM Ranger at the parking area and he pointed us in the direction of several native grinding holes. I believe we counted 15 at the location. Then a couple miles hiking up/down S Happy Camp Canyon road to view all the rock formations before leaving.

Fort Bowie - Took the back road in for the first time ever so we started our hike at the visitor center then looped the trail counter clockwise ending at the fort ruins. Always an enjoyable AZ history hike!

3rd stop before heading home was had in Bowie at the Beef Jerky store (can't remember the name) for pecan pie for her and peanut butter fudge for me .... our rewards for a day well spent in Cochise/Geronimo land.

I actually did out-and-back on the main trail this time, instead of the loop. Started just before noon. Saw two people at the trailhead - tourists from New York in aloha shirts - and heard the woman exclaim "are they kidding?!" when she read that it was a 1.5 mile hike to the VC/ruins ... I had to laugh, then told them how to drive up the back way if they weren't up to the hike. After that I saw no one on the trail or at the VC (except one Ranger), and only a pair of hikers on my way back. There are a couple excellent new interpretive signs near the site of "cut the tent" and the stage station. I bought the book "A Portal to Paradise" at the VC and had to cram it into my tiny pack for the return hike ... read 106 pages the first night - excellent book on the human history of the Chiricahua region! Not many birds or other wildlife - a pair of Green-tailed Towhees were fun.

Fort Bowie lunch break hike after visiting with NPS. A fast winter storm was blowing through, which meant high winds, ragged clouds, and snow flurries mixed with rain. Chilly. Great to see the Fort again, lots of good memories of lunch break hikes here in the past. Trail is in great shape, as was the dirt road driving in. The wikieup needs a rebuild. Visitor Center is closed a few days each week because of COVID.

Love hiking this area, love the Arizona history, love the Fort Bowie Loop!
Perfect time of the year for this one.
Hiked the standard lasso loop and had a real nice long talk with the visitor center ranger.
Lots of others on the trail today, everybody was friendly.
On the way out back to Bowie, made a quick side trip out to Indian Bread Rocks along Happy Camp Canyon road.
What a very cool place to hike/camp ... if ever in the area don't miss out on this gem.
Good fun day in Cochise land!

Morning exploring Fort Bowie National Historic Site with the family and pooch for Black Friday. Did not do the return loop as my mom's knee is shot for elevation changes. There's quite a bit more to the ruins than I would have assumed. Highly recommend stopping at Dwayne's Fresh Jerky for some of the best jerky and roasted nuts in AZ on your way back to the 10!

My Dear Wife dropped me at the trailhead and met me at the visitor center. Nice trail up with plenty of interpretive signs. The wife waited patiently for me at the visitor center (she was having a bad health day) and we cut our visit short to return to our camper in Wilcox.

After reading Apache Wars by Paul Hutton, this was a pretty good hike to do. Saw an angry rattlesnake on the return hike.

As someone with an appreciation for Arizona history, I found this short excursion to be enjoyable and informative. For many in the not-so-distant past, this area was the site of incomprehensible violence and tragedy following the opening of an overland mail route that, out of geographical necessity, encroached upon a critical Apacheria water source. Another one of those hikes that allows for plenty of reflection on the unique hardships of a generation.

Fort Booty, how I've missed you! We headed over to the Fort after hiking at Chiricahua NM, and arrived late afternoon at a deserted trailhead for a quick visit. Spent some time at the cemetery reading about the victims of frontier tragedies. Amazing history in this lonesome valley.

This hike ended up being much better than I expected it to be. It's technically only a 3 mile hike, but once you hike all along the side trails through the ruins, you're easily over 4, closer to 5. Because of the heat, we did this loop in the opposite direction of what they recommend. the Overlook Ridge Trail gains well over 500' of AEG and this seemed like a better idea to try at 9am rather than after 11 and having hiked over 2 miles. So we did that portion first, getting an overview of the entire area before we walked through it all.

the visitor was closed, since it's only open Wed-Sun. After making our way down off of Overlook Ridge, I headed straight to the restrooms in the back of the visitor center. This turned into a slightly surreal scene instantly transitioning from the remote, Western scenery, barren, hot, extremely dry Sonoran desert to an air conditioned, fluorescent light lit bathroom with white tiles, running water and laser activated paper towel dispenser. I felt like I walked into a scene at the end of 2001: A Space Odyssey.

The hike through the ruins was very cool. The interpretive metal plaques were very informative. One of the first things we saw that I found fascinating was the pumps, steam machine and ice maker. It seems crazy looking at this area as it is today and knowing that they had the technology 150 years ago to not only have an ice maker, but get it this far into the remote wilderness an make it work. It was used not only to preserve food, but to keep beer cold for the soldiers, which apparently was some sort of morale builder or something or the other :-k .

Amongst the other interesting things were the reservoir, the school, the barracks (one for the calvary and the infantry), the bakery, powder magazine and gun shack. The trading post/canteen/bar was also really interesting. they have a map there of that whole layout showing the bar, sales room, storage rooms, bathroom, and corrall (sort of a parking lot, I guess.

After spending nearly an hour or more in the bigger (2nd) fort, once we passed the first fort, we didn't walk the extra 300' to go look at it. It's only 2 buildings since it was built in 2 weeks in a big hurry once it was decided to build a fort there.

After that we checked out the wikieup and ramada and then walked through the cemetery. Interesting to see who was buried there, which gives an overview of the history of that area. Most soldiers were re-interred, but it seems one was kept there and was very highly decorated. he was also originally from PA.

Very interesting area to see. The hike itself was better than I expected being longer and having some elevation gain, and the history of the area was also more interesting than I expected it to be. Very cool and appropriate way to spend the 4th of July.

Took Addie & Sabrina on an AZ history hike today.
We took off from the Ft Bowie Trail-head to the ruins and then added on the Butterfield Trail for the big figure 8 loop.
Great hike with the only bummer being that the Visitor center at the fort was closed today (Mon & Tue closed).
Cool highlight of the day was 4 guys showing up at the fort behind us with a drone that they flew over the ruins.
We got to watch the live camera view on there cell phone app!
Great history, awesome scenic views & with 2 very fun partners ..... it was a day well spent in Cochise land!

Another fine day walking through history.
I was the only car at the trailhead, and the first visitor of the day to reach the VC at about 12:30 pm. Chatted with volunteer Sue and Ranger Michael - both very pleasant people. VC has small but good displays as well as nice gift shop items and maybe the cleanest bathrooms I've ever seen at a recreation site.
This is a great hike, well worth a visit - even if you're not into the history. I didn't explore all the paths through the Forts - since I did that last time, racking up 6.6 miles on what is supposed to be a three mile hike. The weather was threatening and I had game 7 to get home for.

We were at the Chiricahua National Monument for a hike. We finished with enough time to be able to squeeze something else in. Denny mentioned to Joe and I something about a David Bowie hike, so we had to check it out.

It ended up being a history lesson hike. Joe's favorite. Short and sweet with lots of cool things to see... and I got to help fold the flag at the end of the day. A first since Boy Scouts. An Easy hike and worth checking out if in the area.

According to the Rangers, David Bowie was never at this Fort.
