| no partners | | I call this the "Modified Cabin Loop" which includes the U-Bar, Barbershop, and Houston Brothers Trails in the Mogollon Rim country. The actual cabin loop trail as I understand it is the Fred Haught, U-Bar, Barbershop, Houston Brother, and the Gereral Crook Trails.
In any event, an overnight backpacking trip with my sister-in-law, Kitty. It was my first time in this part of God's country and her first time backpacking. Awesome country! And she surprised me doing as well as she did considering the first day of the hike down the U-Bar and the Barbershop it rained off and on. On top of that, the thunder and lightning kept me nervous as I counted 1001, 1002, 1003, 1004, 1005........ to note the distance. Nothing closer than 1005, thank goodness! And the clouds, lowering down over the mountains and tree tops, looking heavy with moisture as the white fluff skirted above us.
No hike is complete without the fact I lost the trails numerous times throughout the trek. Talk about trying to impress someone with your backwoods skills. But she maintained, every once in a while throwing in good advice.
At our campsite, I could not get a fire going! But, dang it, I did get coffee made with my camp stove. Ha dto have it. Kitty had forgotten her tent and sleeping pad. Talk about uncomfortable, I pitched my tent and had her sleeping outside. NOT! We both shared my tent, crowded, but I slept like a bump on a log.
Morning was pleasant, threat of more rain, coffee tasting awesome!
However, as the morning wore on the sun broke through providing us with a pleasant day and a great hike.
Some points on the trail I really loved; Barbershop Canyon on the U-Bar Trail, Aspen Spring on the Houston Brothers Trail and water running everywhere! Creeks and springs just flowing!
I will be back, perhaps to do the Cabin Loop and three or four days at it. |
