Needed this hike today.

The last two and a half weeks can best be described as tight knotted emotionally; close family friends lost their son in Iraq and yesterday we attended the memorial service for the young Marine. It gave me time to reflect on my son, in the Marines as well, heading to the Gulf.

But today......after a hardy breakfast at McDonald's in Cordes, Kitty and I arrived at the trailhead around eight and we could not ask for a beautiful day for a hike. Warm, the birds singing, dampness in the air. I was really surprised at the water every where.....well by Arizona standards anyhow.

Badger Spring Creek (?) was a small little stream a water working its way down to the Agua Fria. And the Agua Fria was running smartly on its way to either disappearing in the desert below, or flow into Lake Pleasant.

The water caressing and/or slapping the rocks singing the tunes of life and joy kept us company as we worked our way down the canyon......

Inventory hike to see how I feel. After laying low the last few months due to holidays and my son deployed again to Iraq, he left last Wednesday, I decided to get off my lazy butt and go for a hike with Kit. Besides, I am in the works of getting backcountry permits for us in the Grand Canyon to hike ithe Clear Creek area. Need to get back into shape.

Arrived early morning and it was cold! High 20's I would guess, a bit windy, and not really my kind of hiking weather. However, after about an hour of hiking warmed up enough to pull my gloves and watch cap off. And when we finished turned out to be a pleasant day. One note, a surprise really. But there is a communication tower on top now. New to me.

I can never get tired of this awesome trail into Sycamore Canyon and the hike to Taylor's Cabin. It feels very much like returning home when we passed Sycamore Pass Tank, Eye of the Needle, the dry Sycamore Creek (there was pockets of water scatter about from last weeks rain), Jack's Canyon, and finally Taylor's Cabin. Sturdy, solid, solitary deep in Sycamore Canyon. Peaceful, the only sound was the breeze floating through the trees and brush.

My sister-in-law wanted to do this trip, her second backpacking journey and she done really well.

Short little early morning walk with my eldest daughter. Antelopes, one big jack rabbit, and two baby cottontails entertained us through the hike.

I call this the "Modified Cabin Loop" which includes the U-Bar, Barbershop, and Houston Brothers Trails in the Mogollon Rim country. The actual cabin loop trail as I understand it is the Fred Haught, U-Bar, Barbershop, Houston Brother, and the Gereral Crook Trails.

In any event, an overnight backpacking trip with my sister-in-law, Kitty. It was my first time in this part of God's country and her first time backpacking. Awesome country! And she surprised me doing as well as she did considering the first day of the hike down the U-Bar and the Barbershop it rained off and on. On top of that, the thunder and lightning kept me nervous as I counted 1001, 1002, 1003, 1004, 1005........ to note the distance. Nothing closer than 1005, thank goodness! And the clouds, lowering down over the mountains and tree tops, looking heavy with moisture as the white fluff skirted above us.

No hike is complete without the fact I lost the trails numerous times throughout the trek. Talk about trying to impress someone with your backwoods skills. But she maintained, every once in a while throwing in good advice.

At our campsite, I could not get a fire going! But, dang it, I did get coffee made with my camp stove. Ha dto have it. Kitty had forgotten her tent and sleeping pad. Talk about uncomfortable, I pitched my tent and had her sleeping outside. NOT! We both shared my tent, crowded, but I slept like a bump on a log.

Morning was pleasant, threat of more rain, coffee tasting awesome!

However, as the morning wore on the sun broke through providing us with a pleasant day and a great hike.

Some points on the trail I really loved; Barbershop Canyon on the U-Bar Trail, Aspen Spring on the Houston Brothers Trail and water running everywhere! Creeks and springs just flowing!

I will be back, perhaps to do the Cabin Loop and three or four days at it.

Could not ask for an awesome day for a small hike with my two younger kid's, Chris and Dori. After a cleansing of the air from a monsoon storm yesterday afternoon late and a gray day today to cool the temps, my kids and I arrived at the trailhead around 8:30 this morning. With two kids chomping at the bit, it did not not take long to hit the trail.
I let my son ride his bike, and my youngest and I did the hiking. I wanted to see if she was ready for longer hikes soon to come with her. And don't you know she did real well! I was quite proud of her as we plugged along and she talking up a storm at me.
Snack was funny, we all gobbled up our peanut butter and jelly sandwiches like they were nothing. And afterwards I let them explore around on the rocks.
All in all a great day.

A nice little inventory hike with my sister-in-law. She had expressed a desire to start doing some serious hiking, with a little bit of backpacking thrown in on occasions. I was impressed; her pace was sharp and fast, faster than mine as I followed! Aside from the pace, our hike was pretty leisure with many stops along the way, not so much to rest, but just to enjoy the view and chat about life.
On top and kicking back, we could see the smoke filled air to the east as the Cave Creek Complex fire burn out of control. It didn't help the view; however, just kicking back and enjoying the cool morning air was worth the hike to the top of Woodchute.
On the way back I took the lead back to show her my well worked for slow hiking pace.

From my journal at Taylor's Cabin, "Would like to stay, but experience says otherwise. Decided to keep going."

An awesome journey through Sycamore Canyon Wilderness May 27-29, covering Kelsey Trail, Winter Cabin Trail, Sycamore Basin Trail, Packard Mesa Trail, and a tiny portion of Parsons Trail.

There are many trails in and out of Sycamore Canyon Wilderness; however, this was a trip I've planned for many months that would take me the entire length. From the high country near Flagstaff, working my way down into the Verde Valley.

Later, I will provide a write-up because I think this is an awesome backpacking journey to be experience by all. Oh ya, pictures will be forth coming as well.

I could not have asked for a better hike! For two reasons. First, I hiked with my oldest son just backed from Iraq and second, we seen Sycamore Creek running like the devil after all the rain.

Pleasant, easy going hike, we were in no hurry as we worked our way down into Sycamore Canyon. My son taking a break from the military and me, because I'm getting old. Or, as I like to think, I am stopping to smell the rose.

The day turned into a nice warm one. I felt the heat penetrate my clothes, my skin, and the back of my shirt soaking in sweat because my day pack prevented it from evaporating. At one point when I looked at my therometer hanging on a ring on my pack strap it read 80 degrees. Could not ask for an awesome day in late winter walking among the red rocks, pines, scrub oak, especially after all the foul weather we have been having. (Note: as I type this one week later, it's cold, cloudy, and raining! Wow! Only in Arizona.)

The highlight of the hike was when I heard the distinct sound of water crashing over rocks. I stopped and raised my hand for my son to stop so I could listen. I climbed the highest point, my son following, to the left of the trail and peered down. Far below, slicing through the bottom of the canyon I could see Sycamore Creek flowing. I have hiked several times on this trail and have never seen her running.

To make a long story short, it was my day. I had my son home and I seen the creek running.

Back-up hike to the primary hike I had planned for Dogie Trail. However, FR 525 was closed due to the foul weather which was blessing Arizona. Domisticated hike in beautiful redrock country.
