I did this hike yesterday with a couple of friends (2guys, 2girls). The drive in was a little rough on the dirt road. A couple of streambeds had some water in them crossing the road. We hit the trail at around 11am. The hike down to the river was nice, actually not too hot yet. The point we dropped into the river was a 15-20 jump into a pretty good sized pool. The water was nice, not cold at all. Probably in the 60's. There was a pretty good flow of water through the river and the water was pretty clear. There were 3 or 4 pretty good slides with a good flow of water. The float down the river was a blast. We stopped a few times to do some small jumps into pools along the way. The on abstacle we faced was when we got to the Jug. Whenever I have been before, we have always made the jump into the water below. One of the friends I was with had done the hike two weeks prior and there had been a rope to guide you down to the jump. Well guess what......NO ROPE!!! So we were there with a decision to make. Me and the other guy are experienced in canyoneering. The two girls...not so much. So we sat for a few seconds and discussed how we were going to do this. There was two feet of rope tied to the anchors at the first and a chain 5 or 6 feet across the ledge. My friend took the lead and slowly made his way to the chain. He got there and then we sent the two girls. I took the tail and brought the short length of rope to where the chain was so we would have something to hold onto. We tied the rope to the chain and lowered the first guy down onto the jumping ledge, then the first girl. They made the jump. Next I came down the ledge and braced my arm with the rope and the next girl lowered herself between me and the ledge. She made the jump then I finished the jump. I would not recommend this to anyone unless they are experienced in doing this type of thing. We made the hike out and were all relieved that we mede it out safely.

This is more of a day trip than an actual hike, but I found it to be a really great experience. We did upper antelope canyon. You park at the top where the family that owns the land has a stand set up. There you will pay the fees and get ready to go. Take water and a snack. From the top, the family has two trucks that will take groups down into the canyon. The road down is mostly sand and you have to take one of the trucks that they provide. The canyon is probably only 150 yards from end to end and the bottom is sand. When inside the canyon, the views are amazing. The widest spots are around 15 to 20' at the base and some spots are only 3 to 4' wide. The top of the canyon does not open up very wide, the widest is probably 4 feet. Spending a couple hours in the bottom sounds like a lot for such a small area, but it is worth it. The movement of the sun in the sky makes the color of the rocks and the lighting change dramatically over time. The walls turn purple and red and grey and orange. When the sun is directly overhead, beams of light shoot down into the canyon like lasers. It is unlike anything you have ever seen. The air in the canyon is cool and it is very relaxing in the bottom. If you go on this adventure, TAKE A CAMERA!!!!!!!!!!! I cannot stress that enough. The things you will see, you will want to capture to look back on and experience for ever.

I did this trip a year ago in may. We went in for a day hike and for some photo ops. We hiked in approximately 6-7 miles and came out the same way that we went in. We took the buckskin gulch way into the canyon. The area is beautiful, one of the better slot canyons that I have been in in Arizona. The hike is easy going, although it is through sand most of the way. There are no elevation changes and a limited amount of scrambling/rock hopping in a couple of areas we encountered. The most eventful thing that happened was seeing a four foot rattler creeping right beside us along the bottom. We stopped and got some good pictures of him ( see my photo set). Most of the hike is in slots between 4 and about 10 feet wide. There are some points of the hike that are in direct sunlight in opening of the canyon. Early summer would be the best time to do this hike. It could be done as either a day hike or a 2 day. There is a risk of flash floods through the canyon so check the weather. Not only in the immediate area but also north, into southern utah. The flood range is higher than the page area.

This hike is one of my favorite places to go for a day hike and a great swim. The jumps here are some of the best and the swimming hole is always clean. The hike in is pretty easy, i think we usually hike around an hour and a half to get to the prime swimming hole. Leaving early in the morning (well around 9 is early for me) from the trail head will put you in before the sun gets very hot. We go in with day packs and a lunch and eat at the swimming hole. The hike out can be warm depending on the time of year that you go in. Wear sunblock if you burn. There are three or four places to jump from at the swimming hole ranging from 10 feet to around 25-30. I always have a blast when I go into beaver creek. It is an excellent day hike, or 2 day. There are some good camping spots along the trail, and some near the river as well. See my photo set for some good action shots.

I did this hike about a year ago. Probably in May 04. We camped at the top near the trail head and got an early start in the morning. We hiked in with normal backpacks with everything in ziplock backs (very important). The hike in is not bad at all. We took the marked trail in about a mile past where the jug is then went down to the river to return to the jug. This is one of the most fun hikes I have been on. The river was low in the upper areas. We walked through the river in the places where it was shallow enough to do so. The real high point of this hike is where you have to swim through certain parts of the river. At one point we swam about 100 yards through high grass that stood about five feet over head. There were also a couple of rock slides that we did a couple of times before finally reaching the top of the waterfall at the jug. When we got there, there was another group of people that were in the water below as well as at the top rappelling down the waterfall. I am one for the adventurous way, no rappelling for me. Looking down into the jug, there is a small ledge just to the left. That was my way down. I threw my bag below to the people below and made the plunge. It is only a 20-25 foot jump into the water below. In my opinion, this is the only way to go. We ate lunch on the rock at the edge of the jug and watched people rappel down and another group who made the jump. The hike out got hot. After every turn of the winding trail i thought it was the last. This is another one of my favorite hikes in AZ. It is really a blast swimming, hiking, and jumping through the canyon here. I don't know if it was just me but it felt very warlike to me. Like we were sneaking through his river to find the enemy at the end. Maybe I just have an over-active imagination......

I am goin down tomorrow night. I havge done this hike several times and it is one of my personal favorites. We usually hit the trailhead at around 11pm and make a night hike out of it. Camping at the bottom and waking up to do some swimming in the morning before hiking out. As far as the reconstruction of the area, I spoke with a ranger last week and got up to the minute info. They are not going to remove the dam anytime soon. The date of change is May 16 this year. What is going to happen is they are going to open the gate that diverts the water to the flume so that it will flow into the large swimming hole below the dam. If you are below the dam, looking at it, the gate is to the left of the dam where the 30' jump is. The ranger i spoke to said that theree should still be some really good swimming holes along the base of the dam.

For those who have not been down to this area, I would STRONGLY suggest going before the changes occur. It is really one of the best swimming holes in AZ.
