Great trip with the Arizona Outing Club from ASU. It started out with a 2 mile hike down to the canyon along an old Jeep trail. Entering the canyon was easy. We departed the trail and navigated between large rocks right to the creek bank. Imediately following we had to wade waist deep through frigid water. The trip in late October requires a wetsuit. I wore a .5mm diveskin and it did ok until the last 20 minutes or so. Once we entered the water we were not out for longer than a minute or two for the next 2 hours. There were a number of natural water slides and a few small jumps into pools. Be sure to examine the depth of the pool before jumping. I received two puncture wounds in my shin from failing to check the depth. Towards the end of the trip there was a 30' rappel. There were a few bolts on the right side of the canyon. Those closest to the ledge looked like they were best positioned. There was a 20 foot piece of webbing attached to the anchors further from the edge. It was a narrow fit through the crevice but we were able lower ourselves along the webbing. The pool on the other side is fairly deep, deeper than 8 feet on this date. Great trip. Very beautiful.

We began the hike at a small trailhead 2.8 miles north of Hannagan Meadows on US Highway 191. From a gravel parking area on the east side of the highway, the trail crosses a small ditch before heading into the forest beyond. For the first mile the hike followed the P Bar Lake Trail, which climbed a moderate grade to gain the ridge running east of the road. After the ascent of 500 feet the route leveled off before connecting with the Foote Creek Trail. Turning left at this junction, the route continues for another 0.5 mile to P Bar Lake. Though the lake is little more than a muddy stock pond, it is surrounded by a nice meadow. At the far end of P Bar Lake meadow, the route keeps right at a second trail junction. This is the start of the Grant Creek Trail. Over the span of about a mile and a half the trail decends about 1,000 feet.

"Very difficult" is an understatement for the upper half of this hike. It requires the term mountaineering. There were at least two parts where it would have been nice to have a safety rope, and reverse climbing the last little lip to go back down made me feel like Tom Cruise in MI2. The view was amazing, but it took too much out of my wife and I. We started out on our own and aquired three new friends on the way up.

After driving 7 miles along a rough dirt road, we started hiking on the Peralta Trailhead (2400') and headed NNW along the face of the Dacite Cliffs. The trail follows the bottom of the Peralta Canyon crossing back and forth 6 times across the wash at the bottom of the canyon. The hike covers 2.25 miles and climbs 1400' to Fremont Saddle (3800'). The wash contains dense vegetation and and a good deal of shade, though the the trail is rough going and slow. The trail was easy to follow though parts were steep and footing was often poor. At Fremont Saddle Weaver's Needle comes into view. We ventured off trail taking a heading of 40 degrees to reach a lone tree (3820') on a ridge just short of Weaver's Needle. However, had we taken a bearing of 80 degrees a trail led directly to the lone tree. We ate lunch at the tree and then returned the way we came. Next time we may return along cave trail which can be reached from the trail that crossed from Fremont Saddle to the lone tree.

The Hidden Valley is an off shoot of the National trail in South Mountain Park. From the Dirt Road Trailhead (1380'), travel west 1.3 miles to the National Trail Trailhead. The Dirt Road Trail is frequented by many hikers, walkers, and mountain bikers and is very easy going. The National Trail begins where the Dirt Road Trail dead ends. The National Trailheads North dips 20' or 30' for 60 yards and then turns left as it starts to climb. Continue WSW along the National Trail 1.4 miles until you reach the Natural Tunnel (1940'). The Natural Tunnel is not visible from the National Trail though there is a sign directing you to it. Follow the Hidden Valley Pass SW 0.5 miles through Fat Man's Pass and back to the National Trail (2080'). The Hidden Valley Pass takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes one way. It has impressive volcanic formations and a wash that appears to carry water after a rain. Fat Man's Pass is an ironic name because anyone significantly larger than 200 lbs will have difficulty sliding through such a narrow opening. However, if you follow the rocks to the right (North) there is a way up and over to get back on the National Trail. Furthermore, Fat Man's Pass provides a nice amount of shade for an afternoon snack.

We started out where E San Gabriel Avenue intersects the Desert Classic Trail (1350') heading NE until it intersected with Beverly Canyon Trail. We followed Beverly Canyon Trail (1380') until it intersected Dirt Road Trail. We then followed the Dirt Road Trail(1540') until it came to the National Trail Trailhead. We then followed an unmarked trail SSW to the top of the nearest peak(1870'). We then followed a trail along the ridgeline SE until it dropped back down to the Desert Classic Trail(1380'). The weather was sunny, 78ºF, with a 5 mph ENE breeze.

We departed the Siphon Draw Trailhead (2080') at approximately 1:10 p.m. We followed the Discovery Trail until it intersected trail #53. We continued along Trail #53 into Tonto National Forest ending at the large Basin (3100'). We enjoyed a pleasant lunch and headed back down the way we came, arriving at the trailhead at 3:15 p.m. The weather was partly cloudy 75ºF with a 5-10 mph breeze. Upon reaching the shade of the basin the temperature dropped 10+ degrees with the winds picking up to 20mph. When we stopped for lunch it felt fairly chilly, and I recommend you bring a long sleeve shirt or jacket to put on when you stop in the shade.
