Enjoyed the hike immensly until hiking back to the trailhead I saw three NAKED OLD men with just their hiking boots and backpacks. About a half a mile later, I ran across another couple that said they saw the same three old naked men "doing it" with each other in the lake where it is a popular swimming place for tourists, hikers and sometimes children. Now all togother now: IUK!!!!
I will never go back! :x

The Dixie Mine trail is open! Easy hike, beautiful landscape.
Here are directions to get there!
Go east on Shea (to Fountain Hills), turn north of Palisades. Go to the second stop sign, turn left onto Golden Eagle Blvd and drive all the way to the end. On your left hand side is a restroom stop and parking area. You need to park and walk thru the guarded community gate. Second left takes you to the trailhead.

Getting to the trailhead was frustrating, followed tourists driving 15 MPH...took forever.
The first 1.2 miles the elevation gain was about 2200 feet. According to the tonto map, this hike is about 7.4 miles, so I went further an additional mile and found a small stream. To get to the stream you need to pass two dry washes (the first wash is the 3 mile mark as noted in trail description). There were a few backpackers spending the weekend. The views are breathtaking. The hike back up was rough and tough on the dogs paws, there were many jaggered, loose rocks and sand. One of my dogs lost one of his paw pad. After a trip to the emergency room, he will be able to start hiking in a week. :)

There was plenty of snow, some areas were slippery. On the way up you can hear the waterfalls down below, but it was not accessible. There is a creek about 2.5 miles which was frozen. The trail was very narrow in some areas. I stopped at about 3.5 miles which was an elevation gain of 1,900 feet and turned back. Too cold for me, besides my feet was wet and numb. It was a nice change to hike in the snow, the dogs loved it. If your planning to hike this trail in the next few weeks I suggest taking a pole.

This is a beautiful area. The previous hikers did a good job in marking the trails with stones. Will definetly come back.

Don't waste your time going on this trip. The directions were off and by the time I arrived at Castle Hot Springs Resort, the road was closed. If I ever feel like in the Indiana Jones mood, I might try the second option for offroad trail, but I doubt it. Too bad. I was really looking forward to this hike!

Hiked yesterday for the first time the Pipeline Canyon Trail. From Glendale, it was only a 65 mile round trip which is a perfect get away with the current gas prices.
Started at the North end. 3/4 down the hike, the canyon was recently filled with water which was nice and clean. Perfect area for a quick swim. The dogs didn't seem to mind. I am definitely going to take advantage of this hike for the next few weeks. Don't know how long the water is going to be this nice. Just be carefull, lots of horse droppings on the way. Not a busy area either. :D
