Scrambled up the creek. Saw some folks at the "crack". No one in sight on up the creek.
The water was great, I'd say about 75 degrees. Very overgrown so it's not easy going but worth it. We saw the ruins. Took the bikes from the TH to the signin box and stashed em behind some trees. The return trip at 2 pm, 100 degrees was made much easier with the 20 minute bike ride back to the car. Cycling the first part was a very good call.

TH is 2 hrs from 101 and I17. Five cars in the parking lot when we arrived at 8:00. We had the trail entirely to ourselves. The first pool was like glass, wonderfully peaceful in the shade of the towering canyon walls. We turned back after about 2.5 hrs. Too much bushwacking to proceed.
We were probably .5 miles from the end.
Stopped on the way back at a shaded ledge for a snack. Met our first hiker on his way back from the springs. Told us that it smelled of a sewer.

We continued on back. We saw one hiker in 3.5 hrs since we left the TH. I thought this was great. But then we came upon the aforementioned first pool. It has taken on the setting for the local swimming hole. Must have been 30 to 40 kids, teens and beer drinking dads. This remote oasis in the middle of the wilderness has been transformed into a noisy, littered hangout.

I was so disappointed. How can people be so disrespectful of such a beautiful setting. No law against it, I guess is the reason why.
Between the pool and the TH, we met dozens more "swimmers" enroute to the swimming hole. We even met two 15 year old girls in bikinis, flip-flops, no hat, no water and talking on their cell phone. ( About a mile from the TH, and it's 100 degrees out here )

We eased our pains down in Cornville at the Page Springs Winery. Thats a must stop when you are up here.

All in all, a great hike. Just be sure when you to plan for this hike, that you avoid the "swimmers". Go early or go on a weekday when school is in session.

Started at West TH. Turned around at the overlook. Temps were perfect for hiking.
We were the only car in the parking lot. Everywhere else around Sedona was crawling with cars and people. We met some folks at the overlook but otherwise we were alone.

Swarms of people. Cars were parked on the roadside. Still worth the effort. A must see, the drive out there is beautifull in itself.

Great hike. Left TH at 8:00 am, turn around at 10 am, back to TH at noon. We saw 5 other people on the trail, 2 of which we followed into the parking lot at 7:50 am. At the turn around, we retraced the trail back, because we wanted the workout. And we got it ! Tuff climb out of the creek bed, a little warm, about 80. But it was everything we asked for. Had a burger and a marg at the marina resterant. Pictures to follow.

Went up the barnhart, looped back to TH down the Y-bar. Very painful decent down the Y-bar.
Views are great on the backside of Matz peak. Will NEVER try the Y-bar, ever again.
