I had originally planned to park here 36.915046 -82.870429, and hike the 1 3/4 miles down a service road . Not really feeling it today, I decided to drive down the dirt road to see if there where any private property signs. I drove until I was a 1/4 mile from the high point. Im still not sure if I was supposed to drive down this road. If your taking this road, I would recommend a high clearance vehicle. The tower was closed, so there wasn't a lot to see here. High Point #35, and the last hike of this road trip.

My plan was to watch the sunrise on top of the tower at Spruce Knob. There where 8 people sleeping on the tower, so I decided to walk around and try to find another spot. I then tried to find a loop trail connected to the Huckleberry Trail. I ended up just hiking the Huckleberry Trail back and forth. The Huckleberry trail was nice. There wasnt a lot to see on the trail. My favorite part would be the trees toward the end of the trail. [ photo ] The best views where from the short Whispering Spruce Trail.

While I was driving down highway 92 in WV, I noticed a sign for Cass Scenic Railroad. The second sign convinced me to take the the turnoff . I drove the 5 extra miles to check this place out. I stayed for a couple hours to check out the ruins. The train still runs today, as a scenic train ride.

This is a really nice scenic area. It is easily accessed to everyone, so it can get crowded. Im sure the fall season makes it a more popular destination.
Overall its a nice easy trail. Most of it is easy to follow. I did end up off trail, on the Indian Trail, and found myself in a cemetery. Some parts of the Gorge Trail where closed.

On my last fall trip, I ended up in a church in Connecticut. I was visiting some of my mothers family history. [ photoset ] This trip, I researched some of my fathers family history. I stopped my research when I found Maj Peter Keenan(Penn 8th Calvary, Civil War.) https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/629 ... ter-keenan I didnt find any direct bloodlines to my family, but I still wanted to visit this gravesite. While physically searching for his grave, I found a few other Keenans buried here. The oldest being buried in 1849. I was fortunate enough to be there at the same time as one of the groundskeepers. This 93 year old woman was amazing. Her family ties, to this church, went back to the 1800s. Her knowledge of the church was fascinating. I talked with here for a while about the history of the church and the people in the area. She also opened up the church to let me look around. This was one of my favorite stops of this trip.

I did a loop hike around Mount Marcy. I also added Mount Skylight on the backside of Marcy. Heavy rain from the day before, did make the trail wet and muddy. Overall this is a fantastic fall hike. The Airondack Mountains are amazing this time of year.

After checking out the monument, I started hiking the Monument Loop Trail. I first hiked counterclockwise to the New York Boarder. I was quickly stopped by some private property signs. I then hiked down and around Lake Marcia. There where some nice fall colors around the lake. Then I headed back up the mountain.

There are not any roads to get to Carova Beach. You have to drive the beach from Corolla to Carova. I drove about 10 miles on the beach to the North Carolina-Virginia boarder. I didnt really camp on the beach. I arrived about 2 hours early, relaxed and waited. This sunrise made up for all the other failed sunrises/sunsets on this trip.

My original plan for this hike, was to hike to the visitors center via Ocean Pearl trail(from the NC boarder)and the Sand ridge trail. I would then hike the smaller trails on the way back. When I realized it would be 7 miles to the visitors center, not 3.5, I decided to change my route.

While hiking toward the Visitors Center, I noticed I wasnt really enjoying the area as much as I could. The Sand Ridge Trail was a sandy trail, with out any views of the ocean. If Im walking in sand, outside of the Southwest, I want views of the ocean!! Knowing I was going to take the Sand Ridge trail back to my truck, I decided to hike along the beach. Overall it was a great hike with awesome weather and views.... I never did make it to the visitors center.
There is some history along these trails. There is an old cemetery, ruins of an old church, and an old survery marker from the 1700s.

While I was driving toward mainland North Carolina, I noticed the Currituck Beach Lighthouse. This was an unplanned stop on my trip. I did the tour and stopped by the gift shop. Like most lighthouses, it does have great views from the top.
I then headed to Quantico, VA to take my s_n-in-la_ out for dinner.
Stops 19 and 20 of this trip.

Well I tried to time another beautiful sunrise on Mount Mitchell....... Once again, it was raining with some fog. I added the Balsam Nature Trail to complete a very short loop.
I am planning to drive through here next fall. The Blue Ridge Parkway has to look amazing in Autumn.

I get a text message, from my nephew, saying dinner is going to be ready in a few hours... [ photo ] . This gave me three extra hours to kill... unless I wanted to spend the extra time at his house. I started researching any quick trails along my driving route. I found this little gem. Its a nice area, with a lot of trails. I could have spent all day here, if it wasn't raining. The rain ended up being a blessing and a curse. The rain feeds the waterfalls, and persuaded me to cut my route a little short. I had planned on doing a larger loop.
