My wife and I got up early today to do a short half-mile jaunt up the Calderwood Butter trail. Nice little hike, especially as the sun was coming up. The trail map didn't seem to match the actual trail, though. We intend to explore further.

Some palo verde trees were still in bloom. Saguaros starting to bud.

Mary and I have had a hard time getting out of town the past couple months, so yesterday we took the pups on a nice walk on the paved New River Trail. We got to the parking lot just before 7AM and had the place to ourselves. Along the way, we encountered a few other walkers and a handful of bikers, including one group of around 10 or so. Weather was perfect and it was a good stretch of the legs. The pups enjoyed the new sniffing and peeing opportunities. A stop at a Starbuck's afterward provided a nice conclusion to the morning.

Wife and the pups and I enjoyed a nice day up in the SF Peaks. Weather was perfect. Veit Springs is a such a great little trail. The aspen glades are my favorite part. There are very early signs of fall on the way, some trees even had some color, and we witnessed golden leaves falling from trees and landing on the ground. So we're calling it a fall hike.

After the hike we drove up to Snow Bowl to do our picnic and it was packed, so we gave up and headed back into Flagstaff. Along SR 180 we spotted this unsigned parking area with a restroom and one lone picnic table, so we stopped and ate there, eschewing the table for the ground (we were really roughing it). I may or may not have enjoyed a brief post-lunch snooze.

Scant. Just enough for those desperate for fall.

Mary loves all things lavender, so when we learned in the September 2020 issue of Arizona Highways about Pine Creek Lavender Farm in Pine, we knew we had to go. The farm's store is open on weekends from 10am to 4pm.

We arrived about 11:00. The farm's setting, along a dirt road just off State Route 87, provides that idyllic rural feel that we city dwellers love so much. Mary inspected the wares and I occupied myself by taking pictures. Everything sold at the farm is also made at the farm with their own homegrown lavender. The farm has about 5,500 lavender plants. The owners are very friendly and outgoing.

After the farm, we drove some back roads around Pine and Strawberry to look at cabins. My grandparents used to own a cabin in Strawberry, 8411 West Turkey Run, and had to sell it back in 2002. We thought the new owners had torn it down and were very pleasantly surprised to see that it still stands. I have many fond memories of summer trips to that cabin all through childhood.

We enjoyed a nice lunch at The Randall House in Pine, our first time out to eat since March. We sat outside in the shade and were joined by a couple bees buzzing around. There was a great musician providing live entertainment. The lunch got really interesting when an older guy that was hanging out with the musician came to our table and introduced himself as the drummer for the rock band Gin Blossoms. He explained that he's from Scotland and a clan chief, showed us some tattoos and told us very dirty jokes. We thought he was BS'ing us because he was just a bit intoxicated but the musician confirmed that he indeed was Chris McCann and a member of the Gin Blossoms. Go figure. He had also been enjoying mimosas all morning long.

All in all, a great day up in the Rim country.

Mary and I packed up the pups and headed for Scholz Lake. The drive up I-17 was a bit busy but otherwise pleasant. After the obligatory pit stop at Cordes Junction, we next stopped at the Pilot truck stop in Bellemont, which is very nice. BTW, I-40 is Semi-Truck Central. Yikes. Often we were the only passenger vehicle in sight.

Anyway, after the lovely drive along Garland Prairie Road, which is fine for all vehicles, we carefully navigated bumpy FR-62 and got to the trailhead around 10:45 or so and started the hike. The trail is just to the left of the sign and starts off rocky and narrow for a little while until it opens out onto a great view of the lake, which looked full to my untrained eye. Clumps of cattails lined the shore with tall green grasses behind those. The area is fairly open but with still plenty of trees for shade. The weather was perfect, warm and not hot, with a pleasant cool breeze. We wandered up and back the west shore, snapping pictures and letting the dogs lead the way.

On our only break, we spotted what looked like a bald eagle. It flew across the lake away from us and settled into a tree on the opposite shore, like the Stellar's Jay on our last trip, too far away to get a picture. On our way back, a group with binoculars confirmed that it was a bald eagle and it had a nest with a baby bird in that tree.

Storm clouds were threatening from the northeast when we returned to the trailhead around 1:00. We stopped on the way to I-40 for a nice shady picnic lunch of fried chicken, baked beans, pasta salad, cherries, Cheetos and cookies. The storm hit when we were eastbound on I-40 with lightning, thunder, torrential rain and occasional hail and stayed with us to Flagstaff. Then it was back to the Phoenix Inferno after a great day in the high country.

PS - bonus points to anyone who remembers the Phoenix Inferno.

PPS - Absolutely loved Garland Prairie, and especially the dark dense forest along the road closer to I-40. I can imagine those being quite spooky after dark.

After a long and inexcusable hiatus from hiking, Mary and I decided it was time to hit the trail again on a regular basis. We started out with this pleasant stroll along the Anasazi Loop on Campbell Mesa. The weather was perfect with plenty of clouds and a cool breeze. We spotted a Stellar's Jay, just close enough to watch and enjoy and just too far away for a picture.

Quick and quiet morning hike to stretch the legs and begin working off holiday indulgences. Arrived around 10AM and had the trail to ourselves until the very end. A few quail were the only wildlife sightings.

Mary and I took some friends to the Freeman Farms Pumpkin Festival in Chino Valley. Great weather, good fun. Ate lunch at Murphy's in Prescott, did some shopping, then walked up and down Mt. Vernon street enjoying all the Halloween decorations. The street gets thousands of kids on Halloween night; the city actually closes it to traffic. A wonderful day.

My wife and I took our golden retriever Baxter up to Lynx Lake for a picnic. Weather was beautiful, especially in the shade. Not very crowded at all, likely due to being a weekday and after the Labor Day weekend. Our picnic fare was plentiful, homemade and simple: ham and cheese sandwiches on submarine rolls, baby carrots and cherry tomatoes, strawberries and a banana, and chocolate chip sugar cookies. Baxter enjoyed some extra biscuits. A great day all around at Lynx Lake.
