I went with a group of nine guys into aravaipa canyon. We entered the east gate due to a delay in the scheduling of the trip. It was quite a bit longer to get to the east gate from Tucson, but was beautiful and turned out quite well for us.
We went in about 6 miles to booger canyon and found a great sandy beach with a grassy hill to camp at. Our campsite was across the creek from the mouth of booger canyon. We hiked an hour or so up booger on the second day there.
The canyon was awesome! The only negative was that the entire hike into the canyon is in the creek. The water never got higher then knee deep and was ankle deep most of the hike. The gravel had to be removed from my shoes every time I stopped to rest.
The hike was very easy though. Almost no elevation change, plenty of plush camping and very few people. I cannot wait to take my wife. Awesome!!!

Just hiked havasupai falls with a group of about 20 people. A year ago it was flooded out. The place is different then it was 4yrs earlier, but no less beautiful. It is awesome what mother nature is capable of. This is a very easy, but long hike. Once you get down there it is relaxing, but watch your stuff. We caught a couple of local kids stealing gear and food. The falls are so beautiful. The water was cool and perfect, but when not in the shade it was Hot outside! The night was a bit warm in the tent, but if you sleep outside or in a hamock it is perfect. The hike out if not done early is hot, but relatively easy. The last mile however is brutal. Once we got back to the parking lot we waited till our entire group showed up and then planned to meet in a near by town for breakfast. Our ride left his keys in another groups truck and we had no cell service so he had to be tracked down by others in our party two hours from the trail to bring back our keys. In the meantime we waited in the heat, tired and hungry. We got our keys 4 hours later and were finally on our way home. Great fun and great memories. Cannot wait to do it again.

I actually took a little different route to the pools. We started at the observatory on the mount lemmon trail #5. We hiked down it to the west fork trail #24 then to the pools to camp. The hike was BEAUTIFUL! It was rough on the knees though. Very steep. A couple of miles before you intersect with the west fork trail the trail is very hard to see and if not for the cairnes we would have been bushwacking the rest of the way. At one point you could see the entire Tucson valley from northwest to northeast.
The pools were awesome and a camping was great. The water was cold, but felt good on the soar paws. There were sandy beaches and privacy though there were no other people the days we camped.
When we hiked out we took west fork trail to the sycamore trail into prison camp. The trail was very well marked and was a gradual uphill which was a good change from the previous downhill. The canyons were beautiful and the entire hike was killer view after killer view.
I cannot wait to do the trip again. I am planning a March hike. I highly recommend this hike but suggest taking the sycamore trail to west fork route or come in from catalina state park on the romero trail.

My wife and I set out to go to Manning Camp via Douglas Springs. Our plan, or should I say my plan, was to make in one day, camp overnight and come home. This was my wife's first backpacking trip and she was having no part of it.
We arrived at the Douglas Springs campsite in about 4 hours. It was uphill the entire way. My wife is in excellent shape but I pushed her a little too hard so we settled on staying here overnight.
Though I was a little disappointed it turned out to be a great overnighter for us. She ended up having a blast. The monsoons were not over and they let us know it with an 8hr down poor that night. Even so my wife loved it. The douglas campsite was not anything to write home about upon first glance, but it has a permanent restroom and bear lockers and the actual campsites are nice and somewhat private.
Next time we will take it a bit slower pace, but we will make the manning camp or bust!

I had a great hike down to east fork into prison camp despite the fact that we lost the box camp trail about a mile into the hike. The trail was poorly maintained and we lost it two times before finally losing it for good. We had a great journey following the compass southeast through a beautiful ravine with the left over water running through it. We eventually intersected the palisades trail about two miles before it hit the east fork.
Some advise. Do not try to make your own trail, and do not plan an overnight hike on the hottest day of the year. As we decsended the water became less and less plentiful. We eventually ran out and almost overheated ourselves. We finally found a water hole we were able to use to replenish our supply. Our night was miserable due to the heat. Sleeping bags were not needed.
Overall, the trip was fun and full of adventure, but was not what we had planned. Keep to the trail and always carry a good map and compass. GPS is also advised.
