I think the summary for this hike underrates the amount of route finding necessary on the last mile or so of trail. I suppose after a recent rain the falls might be more evident from a distance, but when it's dry (or nearly so) it takes a bit of luck to pick the right set of cairns to follow.

In any event, we made it. It had been at least 3 weeks since the last rain and there was still a trickle of water coming over the falls. The little alcove made a nice perch with a great view of the Four Peaks, but we opted to make like reptiles and sun ourselves on a nearby flat rock.

Ran into a large group on the way out. Don't think they ever made the falls, opting instead for the views from "Massacre Ramp." I wonder if that was their intended destination...

A real thigh-burner. Especially the day after a 9 mile hike! Yearned for the summit but decided to save that adventure for another day. This one has been on the wish list for quite a while -- feels good to finally have it under the belt.

Set out from the Peralta trailhead on the Dutchman Trail #104. Trail passes over a low rise and then heads down into a broad basin, which was very green with spring growth from recent rains. Nice trail meanders along edge of basin with mountains and small "needles" rising on the left and Miner's Needle ahead in the near distance.

At about 3 miles in, the trail turns left (north) and heads up into a valley, climbing along the east slope. Though not too difficult, this will get your heart pumping before you crest the ridge.

After the ascent, the trail enters an area that gives a wonderful feeling of solitude. Here the vegetation changes noticeably, with much more grass, prickly pear cactus, and even some small trees. Keep an eye out for an unusual corridor of chollas that grow about 5 ft. high on either side of the trail.

The trail then turns left and loosely follows a wash. Eventually, a canyon becomes evident on the right. In this area, watch for the junction with the Terrapin trail. A bit later the trail connects with the Bluff Springs Trail #235. This trail is described in more detail in the Bluff Springs Mtn Loop description.

Classic Sedona scenery, excellent trail. Quite a few people on the trail but somehow managed never to feel crowded. About half-way, Bass & Guinness (17 & 12 lbs, respectively) met a pair of 100+ lb St. Bernards. Quite the juxtaposition, but the meeting, though a bit tentative, was friendly.

Had some time to spare afterward so we took the Xterra for a high-clearance jaunt to some nearby ruins.

First time up the Four Peaks. Drove up in a rainstorm that turned into heavy snow at about 4500 ft. By the time we reached the trailhead, everything was blanketed in 3-4 inches of fresh. Unreal to find such conditions a mere 30 miles from Mesa.

Had planned to do an 8 mi. roundtrip, turning around at Black Bear Saddle, but the snow made for slower going and cold (albeit excited) dogs so we turned around just before Shake Spring. It was fun to watch Bass & Guinness romp in the snow -- pretty foreign to them as Valley residents for the whole of their 2.5 year lives. The weather hid the good views that this trail supposedly offers, so this one definitely remains on our "to do" list for a sunny day.

Really nice, well-maintained and easy to follow trail through beautiful forests at the foot of the rim. Quite chilly at the trailhead (at about 9:00am) but warmed up once we got hiking. This is the longest day hike completed by Bass & Guinness (our loyal hiking partner dachshunds) to date.

Second time on this trail. First time we continued past the cave and went to the top, but this morning's trip had to be quick. Lots of people on the trail, including a few irritable senior citizens. At least no one can compromise the fresh air and the great Valley views!

Hiked this one to show off a little Arizona desert to my dad, in town for the day from Washington. Originally planned to hike to the summit of Table Top Mountain, but changed our plans when we saw the "No dogs allowed" sign about 1/4 mi. into the trail. Even in January, we were pretty warm under a bright afternoon sun, with no shade to be found. We turned around when the trail began winding around the black volcanic rock slope of a small hill due to time constraints. The desert scenery was starkly beautiful, but I think the rough 4x4 drive into the trailhead may be the most memorable part of this trip!

Breathtaking. Literally! Not enough oxygen to go around at the top... but it was definitely worth it.

Nearby fires obscured views from the top a bit. Cool breeze + sunshine was a very pleasant combination.

This is definitely one to start early in the day!
