Picked up the last 1/4 or so of this trail (from 7th St. to Mountain View Park) attempting to locate the North Mountain Trail. It ends up that I needed to go about a mile further south, and I would have caught up with that one too. It all worked out well and I got in a nice easy hike to help break in the new shoes.

This place is a fabulous surprise on the tourist route from Flagstaff to Phoenix. Thousands of photo opps from every direction and angle.

Ample parking, great views, areas to explore, several bathrooms, some with composting toilets (woohooo State of AZ!!)

Heed the "no swimming - high bacteria count" warnings if posted. You don't want to trade a fun day at Slide Rock for a week or so of bacterial infection, just go back at a later date instead.

Great easy trail and a wonderful escape from the Phoenix heat. There were still a few wildflowers in bloom, even in early July. Lots of cicadas, beetles, ants (a few different varieties), some fuzzy orange insects and many, many ravens.

Surprisingly short trail, with a rather abrupt endpoint just below the collapsed side of the mountain. Definitely plan time to take pictures of the rock formations, bugs, birds or other neat stuff you may encounter on this trail.

Complete side note: It was here that I dedided that the ol' trusty, rusty (literally, rust-colored at this point from the sand :) ) cross-trainers had seen their last hike. Although hiking was still enjoyable while wearing them, I did not like the unstable feeling of slipping and sliding around on the gravel. Longing for the sure-footedness that I was certain would come with the appropriate footwear, it was time to invest in some real, honest to goodness hiking/trail shoes which this newbie purchased the next day :GB:

My first foray into desert hiking from over a year ago.

Observations/lessons learned: Even though we all have access to the weather forcasts, it didn't "click" that 112 F is hot, really, really hot, until we were about halfway through this hike. Fortunately, we were already used to hiking at altitude (5-10K), so we had plenty of water, snacks, lightweight and light-colored clothing and sunscreen but still asked ourselves, "What would McGuyver do?" when the heat of the day began beat down on us just past the point of no return.

We chugged down, up and over and were rewarded with our first fantastic views of this area. Some of giant saguaros were still in bloom, interesting rock formations, lizards everywhere and fabulous vistas; a new view around every twist and turn.

Definitely worth the sweat-equity, just start early in the morning, especially if you are a newbie to the area and plan on hiking it in the summer.
