Hope this Helps: There is still no bolt at the top of the first rappel. It is easy to set up a sling on choke stone there, so no worries. There is one bolt on the large rock outcropping, on canyon left, in the pool after the first rappel. This can be used to run a guide line or for a safety anchor for making your way to the second rappel. Also, it can be used as a bolt for the second rappel if you fail to connect into the bolt at the second rappel.

There is only one bolt at the second rappel. It is on canyon right roughly 4-5 feet above water level (at the time we were there-February) Look for it by following the first crystal line to the right, coming up out of the water. This is not an easy bolt to get to. A pot hole hook would be handy as the footing below the waterline is mossy and slopes like a keeper pot hole.

Once at the bottom, I recommend the route on canyon left for returning to the rappels. The route on canyon right is a lot of work and quite risky.

Consider taking a 210 to 220 foot rope and a short rope for the first rappel. We used a 220 footer as a top belay/safety line on the first person in. The first person person then ran the rope through the first bolt as a guide line and then through the second bolt and switched it from the safety line to the rappel line for the second rappel. We pulled the rope back up with no problems once we were done.

Have fun. We did.

I tried this trip again with my kids. This time we made it past the second waterfall but turned back when we encountered a narrow ridge (foot wide) with about a 90 foot drop off. I could not risk my kids on that.

While crossing the stream at Ellis ranch, a local rancher explained it is best to cross on the left/west crossing. The ground is better there. Also, the road past Devil's Chasm is passable.

Thanks fellow hiker's for your support on this hike.

I found Hike Arizona on 4/9/09, pulled the information on Devils Chasm and hiked it with my wife and three boys, 3,5,& 8 y.o. on 4/11/09. The hike was incredible and reminded me of hiking in Yosemite. We stopped at the second waterfall as we could not find a way up it. The water was running because it rained the night before. I assume we can pass it if the creek has less water in it so I will be trying it again this weekend.

Can anybody give me any tips on getting past the second waterfall? (the one right after the big boulder waterfall) Also, can anybody elaborate on where the cave is in relation to the ruin?

FYI: The crossing at Ellis ranch was easy (4x4) and the water was not high even though it rained the night before. The hiking trail was not hard to identify. The key is to    stick to the left/south side of the creek. Drive time from Awatukee to the Chasm was 3 hours by way of Globe.

These ruins are not in the National Park of Canyon De Chelly. However, they are near Canyon De Chelly. Consequently, you can include them on any trip you make to Canyon De Chelly. These are among my favorite ruins in Arizona.

There are two options for seeing these ruins. The first option is a driving trip that takes you to a destination where you can look down on the ruins from a canyon top. You cannot hike down to them from that viewpoint. The second option is a trip that involves hiking to them along the bottom of the canyon. Allot yourself four and one half hours total for the hiking trip. You will need to take a rope if you want to climb into the ruins.
