That will be the last time without 4x4, we made it in a 2x4 Ranger but not without stopping in a couple of areas to rebuild the road. The ole girl showed me her displeasure in our route by giving me a check engine light, and intermitant 2 gear (manual 2x4).
All of the white knuckle driving was soon forgotten once we heading out. Gotta love meadering down a trail with running water, lined with Manzanita's. About half way through, came across a deer skeleton on the trail, a little realization that this is the wild. After a couple of hours we arrived at the ruins, impressive to say the least although a bit disapointed to see so much graphitti on the logs an walls in the peublo. I was amazed at the finger prints left on the house when the mud was spludged in, very cool. After a short time we headed back on out, dissapointed again by the trash and yes some tupperware left on a rock. My pace quickened a bit when the dark clouds started rolling in an my paranoia about getting outta here peaked.
"The hurrier I go, the behinder I get" is a phrase in ole PA, which rings true. As I am boot scooting out I go into a nice deep section of the creek. Yup about up to my nipples, very chilly and slow from that point on. Funny how 30 pounds of extra water can slow you down. |
