Arrived at 4:40am, but the lot outside the gate was already full, so I had to wait until 5am for the gate to open. Saturday is a popular day, no doubt. Quite windy today at the top, which probably explains the absence of flying pests at the top. And the temperature was perfect.

I hit the trail around 4:30am -- I've taken a liking to hiking in the dark. There were other cars in the lot, but I didn't see anyone on the trail and had the summit to myself for a short while. On the way up, I did pass someone coming down with no headlamp while it was still quite dark. There were quite a few wasps flying around the summit, enough to make me move to the more popular rest area on the other side of the trail.

Tom's Thumb is my favorite short hike in the Phoenix area. I was the first one on the trail this morning at about 5:30am. Saw lots of bunnies, but no bees. Quite breezy at the top, but that's normal. When returning, it's easy to end up on a trail for rock climbers, so they've added a sign to steer us in the right direction.

Hit the trail at 5:15am, so I needed a headlamp for an hour on the way down South Kaibab. Temperature was 40F (higher than I expected) with partly cloudy skies. One other hiker was on the shuttle bus, and she moved down the trail much faster than me. The silence in the canyon was amazing well before sunrise; I couldn't even hear any birds. I stopped a few times to admire the very dark sky (Venus/Jupiter/Mars in the east, Sirius and Orion more the south). Just as I exited the tunnel at the river, a mule train was entering the bridge, so I backtracked as 13 mules and their riders started up the trail.
Had a bagel and coffee at Phantom Ranch, and then headed back up via the River Trail and Bright Angel. Stopped for a rest at Indian Gardens and then the 3-mile rest house, knowing that the hardest part was yet to come. Man was I glad to reach the top!

I disagree with the hike description -- this hike is not better than the Harney Peak hike, but it's a good one. I did the loop clockwise, starting on the south side. It was a fun hike, especially at the waterfalls and streams on the north end. From either side of the loop, you hike down into the gulch and then back out. Not many people on the trail; I encountered maybe four other groups the entire time.

Traveled to western South Dakota for a business meeting, so I decided to get a hike in. Started at the trailhead at Sylvan lake at 6:45 -- no other cars there. Much of the hike is through wooded areas, but there are plenty of nice views of interesting rock formations in the Black Hills. About a third of the way to the summit is a bench along a ridge which offers a view of the lookout tower on Harney Peak in the distance -- very cool view. The hike isn't that strenuous but there are plenty of stairs to get to the top of the lookout tower. The views from the tower are very nice. I had the trail to myself the entire way up, but passed a number of hikers on the way down.
I did notice a lot of fallen trees in the Black Hills, due to the mountain pine beetle. Kind of sad, but I guess that's nature running its course.
I definitely recommend this hike if you find yourself in the Black Hills.

Started this morning at about 5:30; just barely light enough to see. I think that I made it to Goat Hill, although I saw no signs -- it's a short, steep side trail off the National Trail to get to the top. I then continued on the National Trail further west in order to see Goat Hill from the other side. It is more prominent when viewed from the West. Weather was awesome and the views are great. I believe that I saw Picacho Peak in the distance.

Great day for a 5am hike. Very few people on the trail at this time of day on a Sunday, but passed quite a few on the way down. I love the quick cardio workout that you get on this hike -- it's probably my favorite short hike in the summer months. A rattlesnake was passing the walkway at the trailhead when I got back. It went to a bush and coiled up. Cool.

Started at 6am down South Kaibab. Needed a flashlight for 15 or 20 minutes, but there were others on the trail, so I felt comfortable starting in the dark. It was about 35 degrees at the rim, but it didn't take long before I shed two layers and was hiking in just a T-shirt. Hiked down quickly, but stopped now and then to take in the views. Passed a few people early on, but only saw a few runners (who passed me) after that. At just under 3 hrs I was at Phantom Ranch for a quick break and a bagel.

Headed back up via Bright Angel. First time on that trail -- it wasn't easy, but was easier than ascending South Kaibab due the shade closer to the top. Lots of people on Bright Angel by the time I got there. The water source at Indian Garden came in handy also.

P.S. the description above says 6.5 miles, but round trip via Bright Angel is closer to 17.

First time hiking to the peak of Mt Wrightson -- quite the workout! Started at 6am. No other cars in the parking lot, so I got to be first on the trail. The trail was easy to follow, but there was plenty of brush in some spots. Needed to climb over a few downed trees after passing the Baldy saddle -- result of the fire. Nothing difficult, though. 3hrs 15min to the top; definitely running out of gas near the end.

Weather was perfect and the sky was clear. Incredible views from the top, including the Kitt Peak Observatory and Baboquivari to the west.

Hit the trail at 6:55am, just after the trailhead opened. After passing one person, had the trail to myself. I was surprised to find on one at Tom's Thumb when I got there (figured there would be some folks from 128th St.). Lot more traffic when I headed back down. Beautiful weather. Gateway was quite busy when I left.

Left the trailhead at 6:30am, shortly before sunrise. Temperature about 30 degrees. Passed some people on the way down, but not many. No mules thankfully, but lots of their droppings. I didn't go all the way to the river; turned around slightly beyond the Tip Off at panorama point(it was my first time in the Grand Canyon, so I was wary of going all the way down to the river on a day hike, especially since the Park emphasizes that the day-hike turnaround point should be Skeleton point 2100 ft. below the rim -- next time I'm going to the river!). Stripped down to one shirt past Skeleton Point, but was putting layers back on as a returned to the rim.
Most beautiful hike that I've done, but I could feel it in my calves the next day. I'm thinking of going back next month.

Hit the trail at 6:10am, but even that early, there were a couple of groups ahead of me. Probably about 60 degrees at the start. Very windy (as usual) on top of Flatiron, and very chilly. When decending the 10-foot ridge at the top of the trail, I always used a tree on the right (when looking from above) to lower myself down. That tree now has far fewer branches, so the descent was more difficult. I'll probably try going down the other side next time.

On the way down, I passed lots of hikers going up. Flatiron on a Sat. morning is popular.

Hadn't been to the new trailhead yet and wanted a short hike to beat the heat. The new trailhead is very nice, and you can get there without using the rough portion of 128th St. Not many people on the trail when I started at 6:30am, but met more people going down. I like how this hike puts you to work from the start, and the views to the east are great (including Weaver's needle).

Arrived at about 7:30am and got lucky that someone was leaving so we could park close to the trailhead. Lots of people on the trail, as expected. Temperature was just right and there were light clouds which made the sun less brutal. Most important was that I didn't see a single bee. It was strange to see the echo canyon trail empty when we got to the top. If the parking situation were better, I'd do this hike more often. Perfect morning hike in the hot season.

First weekend of the month, so the San Juan road was open. There were other cars at the trailhead at 7am, but I didn't see anyone on the trail until coming back down. I hiked up to the top, then back to the trailhead. (I did the Alta-Bajada loop once, but got bored on the Bajada trail.) Perfect morning for hiking -- hopefully we're done with the temps in the 30s overnight. I also hiked on the hills on the other side of the trailhead (trails don't seem to be named) -- nice views of the Estrellas and western valley.

Hiked Sunrise Mountain, setting off at 5:40am. After seeing a mountain lion on this trail two years ago, I'm always looking for something interesting when I do this hike early in the morning. Nothing to report today but a horned lizard. Very few hikers on the trail today, but this one is a good summer hike (short enough to get done before it heats up too much).

First time up Humphreys. Left Scottsdale at 4:30am and arrived at the trail head at about 7am. Trail was easy to follow, even up above the tree line. After the false summits, it was quite a relief to arrive on top. I was winded, but I've never done 3,300 elevation gain at that altitude before. Well worth the effort. Weather was partly cloudy on the way up, but rain was fast approaching by the time I reached the top. On the way down, I got hail at the saddle, then a light rain the rest of the way down. That's what I get for doing this during monsoon season! I think that I'll make this an annual hike.
