We (Ember and I) got out early - about 15 minutes before sunrise. It was a cool, cloudy morning, with a slight breeze - great for hiking.

A couple of years ago, my sister and I tried to hike this loop clockwise, and I died just before the summit. Queasy stomach, shaky legs, etc. (I blame the double red blood donation from the previous day!)

The week before Easter, my sister, @neight33, and my son @AZPopeye93, are hiking this full loop. This time we'll do it counter-clockwise (anti-clockwise for our friends across the pond!)

Today was just an attempt to make sure I can do it. We hiked up to the summit - the junction of the Mormon Trail with the Mormon Loop Trail.

From there, we turned around and hiked back the way we came. A lovely day. Lots of nice people on the trail. I really enjoyed getting out.

Another hike with my eldest daughter, Tia.

We wanted to push a bit more, trying to stretch ourselves(me?).

On the way back, we met a couple from Nebraska. They were using the AllTrails app (boo! hiss! :D ), and had some questions about the loop they were following. It was nice to meet new people, and share our love of hiking.

All too soon, we were back at the trailhead, and back into the "real" world.

Just a quick hike to get out and moving. As I've said before, this group of trails is one of my favorite hiking routes on South Mountain.

Instead of taking the road back to the trailhead, I followed the Pima Wash Trail.

Just another exercise hike with my oldest daughter, Tia.

This was the first time I've hiked the Pima Wash trail down from the top of the road. I quite enjoyed it, winding back and forth from one side of the wash to the other. In and out of brush and small trees. I may do this trail from now on, instead of walking on the road.

Another quick exercise hike with my oldest daughter Tia on my favorite trails in South Mountain Park.

We had just gotten on the Pima East Loop, going counter-clockwise, and met a couple from Iowa. They asked the name of this trail. "Pima East Loop". They had concerns about all the other trails going in every direction, so I explained that this trail just loops around this hill.

Tia and I slowed down our hike to keep them in sight, and when we reached the Pima West Loop, I showed them their options, and they chose to take the connector trail back down to the road. Tia and I continued on the Pima West Loop, to the National, then down to the trailhead.

Thanks, Tia. It was fun!

This is one of my favorite hikes on South Mountain - the East Pima Loop, to the West Pima Loop, to the National Trail, back to the start.

I've recentyly been watching a guy on YouTube, The Hiking Rev ( [ youtube video ] ), and he has some intersting ideas. For example, to hike uphill faster, he suggested taking smaller steps.

So I tried it. On the north side of the East Pima Loop, there's a small uphill section. Always gets my heart pounding and my chest heaving! This time I tried taking smaller steps. The heel of one foot would barely get in front of the toes of my other foot. Like "baby steps" in the game "Mother, May I?"

It worked! I paused a couple of times for a "cleansing breath", took in the views, and kept walking. When I reached the top, my heart was pounding (as to be expected), but I wasn't out of breath, and could have easily carried on a conversation with anyone. Wow!

Anyway, another enjoyable day on the trails!

P.S. I've got to get these two loops into HikeArizona. I frequently hike on the East and West Pima Loops. Get them in here so I can link them!

I'm retired! :y:

To celebrate this momentous occasion, we (my wonderful Trail Angel Extraordinaire wife Rhelda, my oldest daughter Tia, and my favorite youngest granddaughter :D , Avi and I) went on a hike at South Mountain Park.

Rhelda's knee was bugging her, so we only went a short way, but Tia and Avi went about a mile up the road, then came back down. We met at the trailhead, but Avi wanted to do still more hiking, so they started up the Marcos De Niza trail. :o Tia thought Avi would tire out quickly, but she kept wanting to go farther. They eventually made it all the way to the top! What a fantastic granddaughter I have!

Just an early (?) morning fun hike with my oldest daughter. She's rehab-ing a bum ankle, and I'm just trying to stave off obesity. A quick hike up the dirt road from Pima Canyon Trailhead to the bench, and back.

At the bench, it was in full sun, so we decided to sit in the shade of a bush, and hydrate and rest for a bit, then head back down.

As we reached the Beverly Canyon Trail crossing, Tia decided she wanted to do a bit more hiking, so we turned left onto the Beverly Canyon Trail. At the wash, we followed the Pima West Loop around the east side of that hill over to the Pima Loop junction, then up the hill to the rock wall/bench, then down to the wash, and back up the other side to the parking lot.

At the car, we compared our Route Scout mileages (Thanks, Joe!), and mine was three tenths of a mile shorter than hers. What?!!! When we compared the routes, for some reason, my GPS turned off back up at our rest site, then turned on again near the Pima West/Pima Trail junction. (see the GPS track) Not sure why. I thought I set it up correctly. Maybe I'll have to re-follow Joe's instructions.

All in all, a nice fun hike, especially spending time with my daughter. Thanks, Tia!

Just a quick evening hike with my favorite hiking buddy and my favorite youngest granddaughter!

There was a very light sprinkle during most of the hike. Not enough to be bothersome.

Who knew that a 3 year old with such a limited world experience could talk so much! Non-stop monologue from start to finish!

We hiked up the main road from Pima Canyon Trailhead for about 3/4ths of a mile, then back to the trailhead.

Thanks, Spencer, for inviting me to come along!

We (my son, daughter and I) decided to do a "New Year's Day" hike - Peralta to First Water. My son decided to make it extra hard on himself, and take his 21 month old daughter in a child-carrying backpack!

We got an extremely late start (10:30ish). As you know, the first two and half miles to Fremont Saddle are all uphill, and that took some time. The people we passed (both going up and down), were friendly and cooperative. We all tried to "mask up" whenever we were around others. The first part was very busy!

After Fremont Saddle, it was easy cruising, and we pushed right along, only passing a handful of hikers. We took a "lunch" break about 2:00.

As we got closer and closer to First Water, I was worried that we might not make it before dark. Judging by the angle of the sun, I could tell it was going to be close. And it was. We rolled into the parking lot just as it was getting too dark to hike without a headlamp. Guess what I didn't have. Yeah, a headlamp!

All in all, it was a great day. Yes, we were sore and tired. But it was nice to spend time with my kids. Great memories!

My sister was in town for some hiking, so I took her on one of my favorite hikes!

We got out early, and were in the parking lot shortly before 5:00. There were two police cars sitting there chatting with each other. Yeah! No worries about break-ins! Got everything ready, and shortly were on the trail, heading west up the Nationial.

The skies were clear, and there was a half moon lighting the trail. I had a headlamp, but never used it. We could see... OK. Because the moon was directly overhead, there were no shadows on the trail, which made it a little difficult to judge depth.

Quickly up the National, then on to the Mormon Loop. Tomorrow morning, we're planning on the Beverly/National/Javelina loop, so I was playing "tour guide", pointing out junctions, and interesting sites as we hiked along.

We took a break at the saddle, halfway up the Mormon Loop, to catch MY breath. Colleen and Ember were doing just fine!

After a short break, we continued on up the Mormon Loop. It was shortly thereafter, Colleen spotted an owl sitting on top of a saguaro. She got a couple of good pictures. Check out her triplog and photoset.

Soon enough, it was light enough to see with the approaching dawn. Nice breeze up there; very refreshing.

We arrived at the Mormon/Mormon Loop junction, and headed left (south) following the Mormon trail. Then, we were at the National/Mormon Trail junction. Turn left (east), and follow the National Trail back to the Pima Canyon trailhead.

I was surprised at the number of people on the trail for a Thursday morning. I figured work and all. Don't people have jobs any more?

I took a snack break on the bench at the top of the road, while Colleen investigated those rock buildings to the east. She found them interesting. I guess I'm a lousy tour guide, I couldn't tell her much about those two buildings.

A great morning on the trail with my sister. Doesn't get much better than that.

Just a quick early morning hike with my favorite hiking buddy - Spencer, and his daughter, Avi.

From the Pima Canyon Trailhead west up the National, to the Mormon Loop, to the Mormon Trail, over to the National, then back down the National to the Pima Canyon TH.

Spencer was carrying Avi in a borrowed child carrier backpack, and asked to borrow my hiking poles for stability. Sure, no problem. Halfway up the National, he asked about my poles. I told him I set them on the rock by the car for him to use. "Didn't you get them?" "No, didn't you?" So, he said he would go back to the car and get the poles, then just walk around the trailhead with Avi while I finished my hike. "OK, that's fine."

I had just turned off the National onto the Mormon Loop Trail, when my phone rang. It was Spencer. He asked about the bench at the top of the National "road". I told him he could wait there for me, and we could walk back down to the trailhead together. "OK".

About 5 minutes later, a ways past the Javelina Canyon junction on the Mormon Loop trail, my phone rang again. It was Spencer, saying he was at the bench, and asking where was I. I told him to continue up the National, then turn off onto the Mormon Loop, and I'd meet him. So, I turned back around, and started back down the Mormon Loop. Soon enough there he was, booking right along. I "sic'ed" Ember on him, and when she saw him, she took off, wagging her tail to beat the band!

At the junction of the Mormon Loop with the Mormon Trail, Spencer took the one and only picture. We'll see if Joe's software looks just at the date/time stamp of the file, or actually digs down into the EXIF data.

From there down the Mormon Trail to the National, then a left, down the National, all the way to the "road", and then to the TH.

About 100 yards from the car, he stopped to get Avi out of the carrier, to let her walk the rest of the way to the car, "to burn off some energy". He gave me the keys, and I went ahead with Ember. When he arrived at the car and started putting things away, I asked about the poles. "Oh, I forgot them. Leaning up against the iron fence." So, I kept Avi and he ran back to get the poles. Thank you, Lord. They were still there. We have some honest folk on the trails.

A lovely morning (with a nearly full moon to hike by), a hike with my son and granddaughter. Life doesn't get much better than that.

I invited my niece to go hiking on South Mountain with me. She invited her ex-husband to come hike with us. I was under the impression that she'd never hiked on SM before. But as we talked and walked, I discovered that she'd hiked some trails here before - mostly the Mormon trail.

Anyway, boots on the trail shortly before 5:00 am. That's why I love the Beverly Canyon TH. No gate!

Up the Beverly to the National "road", then up the National to the Mormon Loop, up the Mormon Loop to the Javelina, then back down to the Beverly Canyon TH.

A nice easy hike for someone I thought was a novice. They weren't, but they (seemingly) enjoyed the hike anyway.

Originally, my niece was planning on hiking this with me, but she had other things come up at the last minute, so I decided to go ahead and hike it myself. I've this loop several times, either clockwise or counter-clockwise, and I've always enjoyed it.

Ember seemed to enjoy it, too We stopped at the bench at the top of the National Trail road, and drank some water, and I munched on an "health" bar. :sk: (Didn't there used to be a "throwing up" emoticon? That one would have fit better!)

I was in the shade virtually the whole time, except for the last quarter mile or so. By then the sun - anemic through the smoke - was up enough to start warming things up a bit.

All-in-all, an easy, enjoyable hike in the - relative - early morning coolness.

Just a simple out-and-back on the National Trail from the Pima Canyon Trailhead to the bench at the top of the road. Gotta get out and keep moving. Use it or lose it!

I don't have any accurate stats, because I forgot my cell phone.

I think I've/we've finally figured out Ember - she doesn't like anyone behind us. It makes her very nervous.

Another fun quick hike on South Mountain.

Ember was much better behaved this time out. Maybe it was because one of my sons came with us.

A quick loop around West Pima to the National, and then back to the parking lot.

Another beautiful morning hiking. It doesn't get any better than this!

Now that the weather is cooling off (yeah, right. Hah!), I thought it was time to get back on the trails at South Mountain. It's been a few months since I was last here.

I had Ember with me, and she just wasn't... in the mood? Constantly stopping, and looking behind us, stopping and smelling everything, just stopping in general.

After 0.7 miles, I said forget it, and turned around and went back to the car.

Maybe next time, she'll want to hike.

Day 3 of the trip of a lifetime!

Woke up to a cold, COLD morning. There was frost on everything! My son had decided to cowboy-camp, and ended up covered in frost!

Oh, well. Not much else to do, but hit the trail, and start hiking! Incredible views of mountain valley spread before us! Just amazing.

The first couple of miles, we were hiking along the side of the mountain, heading for Granite Pass. Easy ups and downs. Crossed several small streams, could have stopped and filtered if we needed it.

Took a short break at Granite Pass, then took a DEEP BREATH, and started the switch-backs up and Up and UP! Too many to count!

Finally, we reached the top, rounded the corner, and WOW! Another view to take our breath away! (as if the switch-backs hadn't already done that!)

From there to Cutthroat Pass, the trail was mostly level, easy hiking.

At Cutthroat Pass, another incredible view. The whole day was just one view after another. Then, the long down, down down to Rainy Pass.

We crossed several streams, but had plenty. No need to filter.

Reached Rainy Pass at about 3:45. My sister and sister-in-law were there to welcome the conquering heroes! DANG! Forgot the A&W to celebrate with! Oh, well. Next time.

Thanks to my son (my favorite hiking buddy), and my kid sister, Colleen, for being such wonderful hiking partners. As you know, I couldn't have done it without you! Thank you SO much.

Thanks, Lanelle (another sister), for helping with the driving. We appreciated it.

Thanks, Roy & Michele (brother and sister-in-law), for the hospitality of your home and food. Those chicken salad sandwiches were to DIE for!

Day 2 of our Hike of a Lifetime!

Slept the sleep of the dead. I was so tired I forgot to get out my headlamp. Guess who was stumbling around in the pitch black in the middle of the night?!

Boots on the trail about 8:30, and a nice leisurely hike for the first few miles.

We crossed the Methow (met-how) River shortly after 10:00, and took a break in the shady pines near the babbling river. Very nice. Almost cold in the shade.

After the break, we started up the long climb to Methow Pass - a couple thousand feet, as I recall. It felt like 10,000! All the while, in and out of pines, crossing numerous creeks and streams. Very beautiful, indeed.

Finally, after topping out at Methow Pass, it was downhill to our campsite for the night - below Snowy Lakes - arriving about 4:30. I don't believe the campsite has a name, so I called it the "Snowy Lakes campsite".

The site is between two tall mountains, so nighttime came early. Another night of the sleep of the dead. At least this time, I remembered my headlamp!
