Fishing sucked after about half a mile up the creek, so we decided to cut over the mountain over to Horton Creek instead of going around. Awsome! Ended up on Horton Creek trail after a steep decent. We then hiked up the trail and after a breif layover at a teepee camp (I'm sure everybody knows which place), we then headed up to the spring. Not to too shabby day. Made a little camp and chit chated with some other backpackers, introducing them to HAZ. After a breakfast in the morning, we decided that the hike along Horton was too easy and were eager for something a little more......longer, we headed over to the Highline Trail and started our trek toward Tonto Creek. Ran across a king snake, might have been a coral, I can never remember the old saying, but still kept our distance anyway. About half a mile from Tonto, we decided to take an old creek bed south. Alot of boulder hopping and climbing over old trees. There was some pretty serious water that ran through there at one time, there were pine needles packed into tree branches a foot above our heads. When we finally reached the branch off to Tonto, almost stepped on a black rattlesnake. It was about five feet long and wasn't too happy about almost getting stepped on. Unfortunatly, I forgot my camera at home but had my cell phone. The picture didn't come out because of the distance. We then hiked along Tonto Creek for aways and ended up on the road. Hiked the last mile on the road. GPS tracked 15.3 miles for our twos days of playing. Had a great time. Will have to get a different pair of shoes and a water purifier before our next backpack trip. Borrowed a purifier from a friend, worked perfect, the spring water tasted better than the bottled water. |
