Right before you get into town, look for a road sign marked "Spur Cross". Take a left on Spur Cross Rd. and continue for 3.4 miles. You will eventually hit a dirt road and this will lead to the trail head near some Spur Cross Stables. You can park here and admission is $3.00 per person.
For the hike, take Spur Cross Trail northwest until you hit Tortuga Trail. Continue north on Tortuga Trail until you hit Elephant Mountain Trail. Take Elephant Mountain Trail west around and up near the peak of Elephant Mountain at about 3342 ft. elevation. Then continue on Elephant Mountian Trail south until you hit Spur Cross Trail again. Head east on Spur Cross Trail until you hit Dragonfly Trail. Take Dragonfly Trail south until you hit the Cave Creek. You will be in the "Jewel of the Creek Preserve". It is indeed a jewel as you will find cottonwoods, spiders, an old mining shaft, and natural running water (Cave Creek). Hang out here for awhile. It's a great way to end your tough hike. Then continue up Dragonfly Trail to Spur Cross Rd. and you will be back at your car.
This hike takes about 3 hours at a moderate pace. *Look for Caren's along Tortuga trail to lead you.
