I've done this hike two times now. Basically, if you drive North on I17 passed Carefree Highway, you will eventually turn right into the town of Cave Creek. Right before you get into town, look for a road sign marked "Spur Cross". Take a left on Spur Cross Rd. and continue for 3.4 miles. You will eventually hit a dirt road and this will lead to the trail head near some Spur Cross Stables. You can park here and admission is $3.00 per person.

For the hike, take Spur Cross Trail northwest until you hit Tortuga Trail. Continue north on Tortuga Trail until you hit Elephant Mountain Trail. Take Elephant Mountain Trail west around and up near the peak of Elephant Mountain at about 3342 ft. elevation. Then continue on Elephant Mountian Trail south until you hit Spur Cross Trail again. Head east on Spur Cross Trail until you hit Dragonfly Trail. Take Dragonfly Trail south until you hit the Cave Creek. You will be in the "Jewel of the Creek Preserve". It is indeed a jewel as you will find cottonwoods, spiders, an old mining shaft, and natural running water (Cave Creek). Hang out here for awhile. It's a great way to end your tough hike. Then continue up Dragonfly Trail to Spur Cross Rd. and you will be back at your car.

This hike takes about 3 hours at a moderate pace. *Look for Caren's along Tortuga trail to lead you.

Enjoy

Forbesy, her pops Steve (Mr. Folgers in your cup) and I went up north for a pleasant and chilly trip a week ago. It was wonderful. There wasn't too many animals that we saw. However, we had the coolest animal on the trip anyway . . . Kody(Forbesy's dog). I snuggled with her on a damp tarp in my sleeping bag on Friday night. We set up camp with a good covered shelter using a huge tarp and the beastly Ford pickup. We ate and oh did we ever. We had a "hobo dinner" and delicious scrambled eggs Saturday morning. It was just a little day trip. But with much fire wood, camping becomes unforgettable as we all shot the s*** around the flames.

Thanks hiking comrades!

See ya next time.

Went out on this nice breezy cool day with my dad. It was a blast. Great talks cause it was my dad and I would like to go out with him more often. I could learn a lot and also exercise in the meantime. my dad did 50 push-ups inclined on the rail. When I tried, I barely made it to 50. Never underestimate the power of your Dadio!

This was my first night hike. A little scary I admit. The whole time I was looking for snakes and other animals whatever they might be. We went at about midnight till 3 am. It was a bigger hike than I anticipated. Lauren Forbes and I got a little turned around too. It was all fun though. I was beat after. I think yoga is calling my name for some good stretching. I've been outdoors a lot lately. I like it though. I like it a lot. Wouldn't trade it for anything. stay on the trails and discover what lies ahead.

Oh man. What a work out. I have only been to Thumb Butte once before and that time I only walked up it. This time we ran up it at many points and did these crazy man pushups. We also went bouldering just a tiny bit. You aren't allowed to go to the top peak at this point in summer because of Falcon nesting so once we got to the highest point we went off trail into the trees and scoped around. We found another trail thank God to take us back down and around. We carried descent size tree limbs down the mountain. It was a lot of fun. My hiking partner was Josh. He is so wild. He just will start sprinting out of nowhere. It always makes for a super adrenaline pumping work out and outdoor madness mess!

Trails we hit #'s 33, 314, 326
I recommend trying it out if you haven't.
