Hiked along the flume road to the old dam and above the dam to the springs. Very easy hike on dirt road. All original buildings, dam, and flumes have been removed, and once again this area is wild and scenic. I had heard that Fossil Creek was dirty and littered, but we found it very clean - no trash. No camping is allowed. Distance and AEG were taken from my GPS.

Beginning at the Bear Mountain parking area we began our hike on the Doe Mountain trail. At the junction with Aerie trail, we followed the Aerie trail to the Cockscomb trail and then to the top of Cockscomb. Some route finding was necessary, as well as hand and feet rock climbing, but well worth the view from the top. We hiked back down the Cockscomb and followed a trail past the Aerie development and up the south side of Doe Mountain. There are some cairns in place to aid in the climb. Once at the top of Doe Mountain we ate lunch then descended on the north side trail back to the Bear Mountain parking area. This last section of trail to the parking lot is used by many hikers - so a very busy highway.

From Hwy 260 east of Camp Verde we drove north on FR618 for about 3 miles, then right on FR2l5 to Bull Pen Ranch. Our hike began just before the entrance gate to the old ranch and climbed 1700 feet in 2.5 miles to FR214. From FR214 we hiked along the road to a higher view point and then returned the same way we came from The first 2.5 miles of trail is not maintained very well. Some route finding skills are helpful.

East on Hwy 260 out of Cottonwood we turned S. on Cherry Rd. and drove about 3.2 miles to a parking area on our left. We began our accent while looking for a trail. We didn't find it for some distance. The trail is unmaintained and difficult to navigate..... mostly a bush hike, but a good one. This trail was originally constructed by sheep herders.
