Aravaipa Canyon Family Affair, 2017

We were having a family gathering a while back, and I mentioned hubby and I were going to be backpacking into Aravaipa in September. I got a chorus of “I want to go!” from a bunch of them. So I reserved a permit for the max #, party of 10 for Sept 15-17. There were three generations of family on this trip which made it really cool. Every one of these kids have been taught the “leave no trace” concept, and they all followed it explicitly.

We went in from the west end, with the younger bunch striking out ahead of us. We told them to find an area hubby and I had seen before, that looked like it was big enough to hold all of us. It became the “spot where the naked guy was” because on our trip in 2012 there was a guy skinny-dipping there. So off the kids went. They would eventually stop and wait for us old folks, and then they would take off again. Probably about 4 miles in, we came up on the spot we had described to the kids, and they were nowhere in sight. They had kept going. So we dropped our packs there and my brother-in-law took off after them. Hubby and I headed up too, but not that fast!!

BIL caught up with them, they said they suspected that was the place but thought it was too close so they kept going. When they found out that’s where we would be camping, they dropped their packs on the trail and decided to go farther exploring. Out of 10 of us, only the 3 of us old folks had ever been in the canyon before. For the kids, it was like them being in a candy store.

All the kids in the group have backpacked before, it was a piece of cake for them. One of the boys carried up a set of regulation horse shoes with the stakes. Yes, you read that right! Even the youngest was a real trooper, she carried her pack for over half the trip up. But it didn’t fit her well, and her shoulders were getting sore, so it got passed off between the rest of them for the rest of the trip up. And hubby packed two folding chairs – one for me, and one for my niece who is mamma to the littlest hiker. What a sweetheart!!

When the kids decided to keep going, hubby and I returned to camp to start setting up. We set up camp and just hung around camp for the day. I gotta say, I’m probably 100 lbs heavier than I should be, and I estimate my pack weighed 35 lbs. After 4 miles of walking upstream, I was DONE. I decided my main goal for this trip was to survive without injury. When the kids all came back into camp for the afternoon, we had tin foil dinners and pitched horse shoes. After it got dark, it was adult drinks around the fire for the old folks, and crashing for the evening.

Day two, my BIL had to go home. So when he headed down, we headed up. We walked up the river to horse camp, probably another 2 miles. To date, that’s as far as I have ever been. The kids naturally were all over the place, and 4 of them climbed Virgus falls – including the littlest one.

We returned to camp, and ended up getting in the water to cool down. There are two holes big enough to swim in right at camp. We played cards, then sat by a fire and had a couple more adult beverages, and crashed.

Day three we had breakfast and hung around camp, packed everything up, pitched horse shoes again, then headed out around 11 or so to come home.

Temps were in the mid 90’s during the day, still almost too warm to sleep at night. Thank goodness for the water, because on the second night after we all decided to get in and cool off, it seems we all slept better than the night before. Everyone agreed, we will do this again. The kids had a blast; it was really fun just watching them enjoy the canyon.

Did this walk again, approx. 2-1/2 hrs. Heard wild turkeys, saw vermillion flycatchers, many other birds. Also had a Harris's hawk screaming at me. I must have gotten too close to it's nest!

Has anyone ever heard of sitting disease? Well apparently it affects anyone who sits for extended periods of time. Well that is what has happened to me in the last few years. So I have a goal. I'm doing a three day two night hike thru Aravaipa this Sept, and I need to get my hiking legs back. And my job has me tied to a desk for nearly 10 hours a day, so I'm combatting this new sitting disease thing. Life has gotten in the way, but I'm back!

I left home, headed north a little ways to where Old Camp Grant Place meets Hwy 77. There I turned the general direction the Enchantment trail comes to the highway from the San Pedro. I walked down the old PZ Ranch Road then cut across and down into the San Pedro river bed. From there I turned south, walking the river bed back to the private property road (dirt track) we use when we access the river bottom to take our buggy rides. That road joins Putnam Road, another private drive for the folks that live here. From Putnam Road, back to the 77, back to the house. Took about 2 1/2 hours, some sand walking, some bush whacking on the river bottom, some beautiful scenery, and my legs are now jellow. I'm guessing about a 3 mile loop from start to finish, but who's counting. I'm back and it feels great!

On a side note, I decided to take this loop back in January, just to try getting my legs back under me again. I got part way out there, where I cut down to the river. At this point, I'm probably a mile from the nearest house and probably 50 yards off the PZ Ranch road. I heard a noise, thought it was rabbits. I had been seeing cotton tails all over the place. But then something brushed my leg. I looked down and there was a puppy staring back up at me. He was approx. 3 mos old, had a big chunk of cactus in his foot, and was whimpering. I picked him up and took the cactus from his foot, at the same time looking around to see if he was alone. Low and behold, there's another puppy looking at me from behind a tree a few feet away. I put little boy down, and walked over to the second puppy. She tried to run, but she too was full of cactus and couldn't. Needless to say, these two cut my hike short, After I cleaned all of the cactus off of her, I turned right around and headed to the house with them. I tried to find the owners, but no one around here knew where they came from. I know just as sure as I'm sitting here, someone dumped them. They did not look like they had walked to where they were, nor were they out there that long. It only took me 5 days to find them a home. If I ever find out who did that to them, I'd like to take them out on the desert with no shoes or water and leave them. Something told me to walk that day, first time in over 2 years I had walked out there.

Our daughter lives in Springerville, my dad spends his summers in Nutrioso. A grandson was graduating from the 8th grade in Springerville, so we went up for the weekend. Monday all kids were in school, daughter working so what better day to grab my dad and step mom, jump in the truck and go find some wildlife. We do it every chance we get when we go up to that area. This trip did not disappoint. For this trip, we saw elk, deer, antelope, Canadian geese, Mallard, and rocky mountain bighorn sheep. The sheep we saw the next day on our way home, just outside Eagar.

Good grief! Been a long dry stretch for me...I've been chief camp cook for deer camp, but finally got to take the buggy out for a little while. Beautiful day. I've been suffering from a cold, bronchitis and laryngitis (sp?), but I refused to stay home after the kids got packed up and went home. We went for a couple of hours in the afternoon.

I won't be posting or looking at photos until I can get my internet upgraded, whenever that will be! I lost access to the site from work, and my satellite connection at home isn't fast enough. When I try to pull up a photo my computer just hangs. I don't have the time or patience to wait it out. I'll be off and on, but not alot for a while.

It's been a crazy last couple of weeks. Company came from out-of-State, just to ride around on the desert. This big group of guys come every year to the oldest brother's house, and they spend a week riding. The oldest brother has been a friend of my family since I was a little kid. He has always invited my husband to ride with them, and finally this year hubby got to go. This is always a 'guys only' kind of trip, but they usually let the gals go at least once. Us gals got to go on Sunday before their crazy week started. Hubby and I decided to show them a couple of crested saguaro cactus, and show them some views.

Today is my birthday. We actually did Aravaipa yesterday for my birthday present. Today was a get the buggy on the road kind of day. However, we had forgotten that it was quail season. Too many quail hunters everywhere we looked. So we sat under a huge black walnut tree, had lunch and solved the world's problems. After that, we came home and grilled for our lunches for the week. An absolutely perfect ending to a perfect weekend. I couldn't be happier. :y:

We watched a Harris hawk circling around us, but didn't see much else. That's OK, I spent my birthday with my hubby - my best friend.

Little Running Water. That's what the Aravaipa Apaches called this place. Aravaipa holds a special place in my heart which I will not even try to explain, you would think I'm crazy. Suffice it to say this was a fantastic, emotional, spiritual experience for me. I understand why it was such a special place for them. I've lived close to this place nearly all my life, and this is my first trip into the canyon. It definitely will not be my last.

For me, the beauty starts right after you leave the pavement on the road in. My hubby and I, and his mom discussed every ranch house, every residence we came to. "Do you know who lives there now? I know so-and-so used to live there a long time ago, but I think they sold out. And it looks like someone has redone the house, I wonder if it got water in it in that big flood in '86". And another conversation - "I think the Aravaipa Arabian Horse Ranch is the last place at the top of the canyon, we used to get there by driving around either the Ranger Station, or going by the Nature Conservancy station. I don't remember exactly." "How many buildings did the Woods family have when they donated their ranch to the Nature Conservancy?" "Was the horse ranch part of the old Woods property?" They went on and on during the whole drive.

The Abe White bridge was named after a family that we know well, also. Abe White's grandson works with my husband. And Aravaipa Farms - I worked with a guy who used to own that place as well. It's now a bed and breakfast, and I understand it is on the market again. Then there's the Youngs. They have been in the area for ever, folks who knew what it was like to build something out of nothing, and turn it into paradise.

Wow. Why did I wait so long to come? I know part of this answer. I'm very self conscious, I didn't know if I could hike it or not. I was pretty athletic as a kid and a young adult, but 9 years of working during the day and going to college at night turned my body into a big bowl of mush. I've been working at getting my strength back, and getting some sort of hiking legs back under me, but I wasn't sure how well I would do. And let me tell you, my MIL is 74, she walks every single day at least 5 miles. I was more than a little bit intimidated at her coming along. But I knew she would enjoy it, and she would enjoy a day of just getting away. I had to ask her to come. She loved it.

As it turned out, we went in all the way to maybe a half mile from Horse Camp Canyon, stopped in the shade and ate lunch, then walked back out. My lower extremities were really asking me what the bleep I was doing to them by then, but today I feel pretty darn good. Outside of jamming my right big toe into a rock and making me think I broke it, I survived quite well. Every where we looked, it was another "Oh Wow" moment.

We saw other hikers and campers, even caught one guy skinny dipping. He didn't seem to care we caught him bare naked, he just stood there dressing as we walked up on them.

We left the trailhead at 7:35 a.m., and were back at 3:40 or so. I think we took an hour long break for lunch. I haven't quite figured out the mileage, but that to me wasn't a big thing. Hubby and I are planning to go again next year, but this time to spend the night. What a great trip!

We took the buggy for another trip, still breaking in the diffs for an upcoming event my hubby will be participating in. Good company, tons of fun, saw lots of deer. We went up one canyon, ended up on the Arizona trail, then turned around and headed for Peppersauce Campground. We went past it, past the cave (three cars parked there), and took another road that turned back toward Mount Lemmon. This loop brought us back down the Rice Peak road, which originates from Peppersauce Campground. Great loop, kinda gnarly, gave the buggy a good workout. We stopped on the Rice Peak road at a pull off that's across from a huge area we like to glass for deer. We cooked bratwursts on the grill and I glassed for deer (found some, too!). This pull off is about 4 or so miles from Peppersauce Campground, and there was BEAR SCAT there! Yep, there's bears up there! Apparently the one we saw last year is still hanging around. No pics of it, but lots of sign.

Awesome day! :y:

Today was a break in the buggy diffs day again. We left the house at around 8:30, our main objective was to put some miles on it, and of course see how many critters we could find. We weren't disappointed, that's for sure. The very first thing we saw was the brightest orange Gila Monster I've ever seen. What a beauty! The pics I took were after he had already headed back into the shade, so they do no justice to his color. :y:

We had a great day, put about 30 miles on the buggy, saw a mule deer buck and three does, lots of red tail hawks, quail, and various desert birds we always see. I took pictures of a stock pond that had green algae all over it, I just thought it was kinda cool. I like the contrast between the colors. (Hey, I'm an artist! What can I say...) :D

It got hot on us, so we went home a little earlier than we had planned and got into the pool to cool off. Good times!

Got to walk home again. I took the scenic route this time, staying off the road. That meant climbing ridges, there's 5 I usually climb. I'm a little sore today. :)

No critters to speak of that I could find, except the lizards, thrashers, sparrows, and some quail. I did see one sparrow hawk, but he was too far away to get a photo. There was fresh sign all over the place where deer and javelina had been through, but I never saw any. I even found the javelina's sleeping place, but they had vacated. If I saw as many snakes as I saw snake tracks, holy moly! There's a LOT of snakes out there. I thought of Gummo... :)

Woohoo!!! My mechanic hubby got the buggy fixed. Rebuilt rear differential after destroying it on Labor day weekend, then tore down and modified the front differential so it wouldn't blow apart the way the rear one did. Good thing too, he said, because the front one had the same problem the rear one did. Just hadn't gone belly up yet. For good measure, he rebuilt the steering box and replaced upper ball joints too.

Anyway - he finished it up by around 11, by 12:45 we were outta there. Packed a lunch/dinner, Iced tea, water and a few adult beverages, and headed up Putnam wash. This was just a trip to make sure the repairs would hold, to just get back out there, and any other excuse we could dream up (do we really need one???). :D

Wildlife we saw: Red tailed hawks, Harris Hawks, black tailed jackrabbits, cottontail rabbits, Gambel's quail, Gila woodpeckers, countless lizards I couldn't identify. Then we ran into a friend of ours at Putnam Springs on the way back, and just sat and visited with him for a bit before going on home. Beautiful ride, good relaxing time and the buggy's in great shape. :y:

I Finally got a day where I could go walking. :y: I took my camera, binoculars, and water and headed out. My plan was to go find a bird that I had found before, trying to identify it. I walked north, downstream of the San Pedro. Then worked my way to the river bottom and walked the water back to the confluence of the Aravaipa and the San Pedro. Then I worked my way back to the house. Beautiful trip. It's absolutely a blessing to live in such a beautiful place.

I found bird I was looking for - after my camera battery died. :( After discussing identifying markings with Outdoor Lover Pam, I know now this bird is a Gray Hawk. The barring on the underside of his tail feathers gave him away. Next time, I'm charging my camera battery before I go out there. Although I don't think I would have been able to get a pic this time, as soon as I took the binoculars down he flew. I'll go again! :y:

Holy pumpkin! Another foot journey home, and this one turned out pretty interesting. I don't like to run across ANYONE when I'm out there. That's because I'm not on any normal hiking trail that other hikers use, so I don't know what anyone else would be doing out there. So when I hear or see someone, I duck into the brush. I just plain don't want to be seen. Well, today I got out of the van, took off down the dirt road that is PZ Ranch road, and immediately heard a pick-up coming down the road. This was my first jump into the brush. After this pickup goes by, I head out. I'm paralleling the road because it's just as easy to walk. Anyway, I had decided to stay on the road so I could get home a little earlier and get something done. I'm hoofin' away, and I hear a dirt bike. It sounds like someone is working on it, and it wouldn't run. It started, stopped, etc. Then I heard ANOTHER dirt bike. So rather than try to figure out what they were doing in the road ahead of me, I turned and shot straight up the ridge. Then I kept hoofin', and I heard the dirt bike finally get started and head the direction I was walking. OK fine, the pickup went the other way, the dirt bike headed out ahead of me. Hhmmmmm.... where the bleep is that second dirt bike? And did I hear possibly a quad in there somewhere to???

I keep hoofin' about 10 minutes more, and then - Oh pumpkin!!! There's a dirt bike that just started up, not very far in front of me! There's a couple of old roads that join the original road I was on. They must have hit that road and I never heard them. I froze, because at that point if I had moved, they might have spotted me. This guy started riding, and made an arc around my left side. So I start dancing around trees, trying to keep the trees between me and that bike - when the second bike started up, where the first one was sitting. Double Pumpkin!! All I could do then was squat down and hope no one saw me. These two bikes are now riding where I don't believe there's a road. And we are on private property. I don't know how they hit that road without going through a gate that I was pretty sure was locked. Hhmmm.....definitely don't want them to see me. I don't think they are up to any good.

So I start using the shadows and the trees to my advantage, and beat feet across country in the direction of the house. I get across a huge wash, the last one I need to cross (crossing a fence too), then take off across another flat paralleling the road. I come to a point where two more roads intersect, and I cross them. My normal path is to walk one of these roads, but I decided not to this time. Then I hear a pickup again. Then I hear ANOTHER pickup. Both are coming my direction pretty fast. One is on the first road, the second is on the second road. Good grief!! Keeping from being seen by anyone has definitely been a challenge today! Anyway, I cut across the flat, one road on my left and the other road on my right, with a pickup on each side. I started feeling like I was being hunted! :scared:

We all three hit the section where the two roads intersect at almost the same time. I stayed behind the trees while the two trucks hit the highway, then I hoofed it the rest of the way home. I have about 75 yards to parallel the highway before I get to my gate.

This wasn't fun today! I have no idea what ANY of them were doing up there. The pickups were on public land, but the bikes were not. :?

Another walk/hike home. Added a couple of ridges instead of walking the road this time, made it a little more difficult. Just what the Dr ordered!

No wildlife to speak of, but lots of critter tracks. Seeing the actual critters will only be a matter of time.
