After being disappointed with Anza-Borrego I had to see with my own eyes at my old stomping grounds to make sure things are up and up with all this recent rains and so far good to go. Plenty of Mexican/AZ Poppies with Superstition Mallow some hedgehog cactus, Phacelia, Desert Marigold, I think possibly Salvia columbariae, CHIA (Very nice); and plenty of wild brittlebush painting the background.

Though the aspens are begging to change its still too early for much Fall color. The views from upper Abineau are spectacular as you can see the south rim of the grand canyon and a slew of volcanos near the base of the mountain. Its a straight up hike and is more difficult when your completely covered by tree stands for most of the accent. Supposedly some of the Aspens on Bear Jaw turn Red so when they do change I would recommend this hike. Probably beginning of October as this area usually changes color sooner then the rest of the aspens in this area.
I would recommend starting the loop with the Abineau trail 1st unless you like steep declines.
BTW Kendrik Mtn is exploding with color on its north face right now.

Made it to the Superstition Ridgeline via Hieroglyphics canyon. Found the trail just past the petroglyphs. I found the trail to be fairly well maintained. The final thrust to the ridgeline is very steep but doable. I then took the ridgeline between Hogs/Hiero canyons back. I do not recommend this as a hiking route but as a possible canyoneering route.
The views are fantastic though with Hogs canyon and Flat Iron off to the west and Superstition Mountain and its outcrops to the east. I decided to come back down a wash that is just past the petroglyphs (I was trying to take advantage of some scree shale runs to ski down the mountain (about 300' worth)) and managed to miss it along with every possible good route going down (if there is one) all the while in shorts. I've done it in the past and its like a escalator going down. Going up it will drain you of all your energy.
There is a point hiking in the Superstitions when my FUN meter is at negative zero and it's always when I'm bushwhacking. By the time I would've turned around I was way past the point of no return as daylight was becoming an issue.
There probably is a much better route staying on Hog/Hiero ridgeline but making it to the supes ridgeline still requires some canyoneering.

Found uncharted mine hole (yep a hole, straight down). Didn't bother going down, looked like something you might end up stuck in.
