It was August and I hadn't been crazy enough to do any hiking in Phoenix recently so I came out here to one of the closest stands of pines to the North Valley with a good trail system. I took #159 to #165 to #166 then back on #159 to the car. It was probably 90 degrees at the peak of the day but by that time I was on #159 which has plenty of shade. #166 and the SE parts of #159 are getting pretty faint in some places. It's still easy enough to tell where the trail is though. The dogs loved #159 but the rest of it was a bit rocky for my Shepherd's feet.

It had been too long since I did anything over a few miles ( the wife likes short trips ) and this looked like a good one to break the dry spell. I did the loop of Cave Creek Trail #4 and Skunk Tank Trail counterclockwise. The first few miles until you get to the Skunk Tank turn off are easy and mostly downhill but it really picks up after that. Saw a couple of Osprey aircraft flying low through the canyon which was definitely cool. I think this trail would be best in the fall when the leaves are turning but it was still a great trail with plenty of shade for the first part and water for the dogs. Only ran into one other person on the whole loop.

This was my first time to Reavis Ranch. I was surprised there were so many cars at the parking lot considering how remote this trailhead is. On the up side since I was doing this one solo it was nice to have plenty of good people to talk to on the way.
When I got the ranch I kept walking past it along the AZ trail a ways and figured I had seen everything. Thankfully someone told me that the main part of the north orchard was actually a little to the east of that part of the trail or I might have missed it.
At 14+ miles round trip this was definitely near the max for me ( and my dogs ) in one day. Next time I'm bringing the camping gear :).

This trail is very overgrown. For the first mile or so there are plastic ribbons tied to branches here and there that make it easier but after that the trail is extremely hard to follow. I didn't see any signs of people having been on it recently. My guess is this one will have returned to nature completely within a few years. Take a gps track and a machete if you're going to try it!
