Escaped out of Tucson to get some outdoor time in up in Flagstaff. Fun little hike with the pups. Very cool rock formations. Gate was closed based on level 2 fire protocols (that's what a local told us), so add about 1.2 miles to the route. Only encountered one biker. Got out before the rains hit, nice little moderate hike.

A very good easy/moderate hike especially to get your dogs some exercise. Always deer and cows along the way and today wasn't different. Great views the whole way of hills and valleys and then panoramic at the top with great views of Kitt, Baboquivari, Wrightson and Hopkins. You break the trip up (kind of) into 1.3 miles section 1) big portion of the climb to the intersection of trails/roads 2) to the little cabin complete with picnic table and rope swing 3) traverse that gets you to the last climb to the towers.

Being a Friday we expected some people on the trail but very few cars were in the First Water Trailhead lot. This was just Anita and my second time doing the route. Having rained the prior night the trail starting out had very few footprints, actually just one. We cruised through the first 2.5 miles then the trail turns a bit rocky taking a bit of the pace out of the cadence. After about 1.5 miles passing the only moisture, you come to the first of 9 river bed crossings, I love my rock hops. Once through the river bed the fun begins, a quick climb and then the adventure across the length of Battleship. After the first vertical climb we met the only other hiker out there, he was going back and hadn't found his way to the end. We continued on and only missed one climb heading out on to a ledge before figuring out our error and finding the climb. My best advice is to always look up and over until the end where you need to go down and around to the left. We had the entire mountain to ourselves enjoying the beautiful payoff that is at the end of Battleship. We both noted that the climbs were actually harder than the descents on the scramble. The other interesting thing about the day was that is was a rare humid day coming in at about 50%. Anita and I both drank about 3.5 liters. While the slog at the beginning is real, so is the payoff at the end, we will be back.

Fall colors were brilliant on this hike, yes in southern Arizona! 3 miles of color with very little climb and then to the top of Basset Peak with really cool views. While hanging at the peak we met one of the more prolific hikers and contributors to hikearizona. And of course keeping the youthful spirit crawling around in the rock formations. This will become a yearly fall hike. Post hike we satisfied our carnivore urges at Big Tex in Willcox.
