Having rained the prior night the trail starting out had very few footprints, actually just one. We cruised through the first 2.5 miles then the trail turns a bit rocky taking a bit of the pace out of the cadence. After about 1.5 miles passing the only moisture, you come to the first of 9 river bed crossings, I love my rock hops. Once through the river bed the fun begins, a quick climb and then the adventure across the length of Battleship. After the first vertical climb we met the only other hiker out there, he was going back and hadn't found his way to the end. We continued on and only missed one climb heading out on to a ledge before figuring out our error and finding the climb. My best advice is to always look up and over until the end where you need to go down and around to the left. We had the entire mountain to ourselves enjoying the beautiful payoff that is at the end of Battleship. We both noted that the climbs were actually harder than the descents on the scramble. The other interesting thing about the day was that is was a rare humid day coming in at about 50%. Anita and I both drank about 3.5 liters. While the slog at the beginning is real, so is the payoff at the end, we will be back. |
