Brinkley Point. First off, this is not a beginner’s hike. Although in the beginning it may seem that way. I would consider it a Class III “Bushwhack” (long pants, gloves, hat, boots, map, compass/GPS and over a mile of cross-country trail finding, very steep in some spots) (ropes are not required.. that would be a class IV Bushwhack).

The trail from Box Camp trail head to the turn off for Box Springs it’s nice and easy to follow. Just after the turn off to Box Springs the trial starts to become over grown, it’s not hard to follow, but the vegetation is over running the trail in quite a few places and there are several downed trees that need to be crossed. At the saddle the trail forks, you can’t see the fork but it’s there. If you continue following the trail west you will go to Box Springs. The trail to Brinkley Point follows the ridge line to the south. If you can’t find the trail just follow the ridge line.

For the next mile or so to Brinkley Point the trail is virtually non-existent. Having a map and compass is a must on this part. I also used the “HAZ Tracks” program to keep me going in the right direction. (Thanks Guys). Trees are down and bushes cover the trail. So follow the ridge line and keep an eye out for small sections of trail (about 10 to 20 feet in length) that are in relatively good conditions that appear out of nowhere and vanish into thick brush just as quickly, only to reappear 30 to 50 yards down the ridge. Periodically you should see rock cairns marking the route, I’m not sure if they are following the trail or just marking a general route. Another helpful hint to look for is old trees or stumps that have been sawed off or cut back. From the looks of the trail (or parts of it) I would say that it was a well maintained trail 20+ years ago. At one point the trail goes down a steep ridge/slope to the west. The good thing about it, is that it’s short. Make sure to keep an eye on the ridge line your following, it’s easy to get off track in the thick brush.

The last quarter mile to the Point is fairly easy and has great views in all directions. At the point there is a US Geological Survey Marker (Elevation 7073 ft) and a Trail Registry in a glass jar. You can see Thimble Peak to the south, Cathedral of Rock to the south-west and Lemmon look out to the north. And off in the far distance you can see Baboquivari Peak in the south-west.

At one time this would have been a nice easy trail and a good place to have lunch. It would be nice if the forest service brought it back.

We all think in different ways.
I was telling a math teacher friend of mine (who is into weight training) about my hike up to the window. We talked for a good hour or more about the hike and this is what she came up with.
The hike is 12.8 miles round trip and 4,300 feet elevation gain, in 10 hours.
1 mile is 5,280 feet in length, 12.8*5280=67,584 feet
1 squat is about 1.5 feet in length,
So according to her calculation I did (67,584/1.5) 45,056 squats in 10 hours.
This explains why I’m sore today.

Pine Mountain AZT 21
First, we only hiked the trail section. I had already hiked the road section last year in November. I recommend bicycling this road section. All the ATV and ORV can ruin a good hike.
We started off early but didn’t realize shuttling vehicles would take almost 3 hours. So we started around 10 am.
The trail is a little over grown from all the rain. Most of the way trail finding wasn’t hard but the catclaw was making its presents know to all travelers. The only place we lost the trail was where the AZT crosses Sycamore Creek (33.851782, -111.452808). It looks like the creek had a flash flood and wiped out all traces of the trail in the creek. The trail markers on either side of the creek were fine condition and still in place, but if you’re not use to trail finding/bushwhacking it could be a little challenging. Also the mile or two section (trail south) could use some more marking. The rock cairns were hiding in the grass and could be hard to find in places. All in all the trail is a little over grown but in good condition.
Water was clear, clean and plentiful. We stopped for lunch at one of the pools in Boulder Creek. This was an unexpected find and was the highlight of the hike. It was a warm day and the pool was large and inviting, what a great place to cool down in and relax.
We finished the hike around 4pm. So 7 miles in 6 hours with an hour lunch/swim break.

Since I was in the area fishing, I thought I should bag Promontory Butte. But I thought I would try an easier way to the Butte, bushwhack in from the North.
I drove in from Woods Canyon Lake on FR 300, then jumped on FR 76. The drive on FR 76 was a bit muddy but not bad, any hi clearance vehicle could make it, no 4x4 needed.
Parking @ Lat 34.348833 Lon -111.041379. The bushwhack wasn’t much of a bushwhack. It was an easy .4 miles to the Butte, up a gently sloping hill, covered in conifers. Just a great little walk in the woods. Once I reached the cliff I knew I was there and started looking around for the marker and register. The stone cairns made it easy to find them and the stone totem standing over 7 feet tall, hiding in the forest a few yards away was a cool find as well.
It had been threating to rain all morning but didn’t so when I made it back to the truck I figured that I would sling up the hammock and take a snooze and listen to the elk bugling in the distance. But as my luck would have it, just as I was starting to dream happy HAZ dreams, it started to rain.

The Aravaipa had a flash flood a few days before we went in and it took out part of the road and it knocked down a tree that blocked the road, so we had to start at the sign-in parking lot. It added about a mile and a half to the hike in. About the time we reached the trail head a guy from the Nature Conservancy showed up and told us that he was going to remove the tree and do some work on the road. (On the way out the tree was cleared and the road was drivable).
As for the hike in, all the micro trails on either shoreline were gone, some big trees were also knocked down and move around, and route finding could be challenging at times. We all joked that next time we’ll bring machetes. The water was running muddy on Friday but by Monday it was pretty clear. All the camp sites seemed to have survived with little or no damage. And the canyons were fun to explore and find the new rock falls. All the pools survived and were very enjoyable in the summer heat.
One of the unexpected highlights of the trip was all the mud. Yes, it’s funny to laugh when someone slips and falls in (which we all did, repeatedly). But the real treat was all the fresh animal tracks. We couldn’t walk 30 feet without seeing blue heron, raccoon, coatimundi, deer, squirrel, and even bear tracks that were less than 24 hours old.
If you never been through a canyon after a flash flood you should try it sometime. You just might like it.

A little warm but a good hike. The water was running nicely and fun was had by all. But I was almost run over by the Salpointe High school track team. Must have been 30+ running up and down the trail. I don’t ever remember being that young or having that much energy.

This is a great little day hike. The weather was perfect, in the low 80’s and the sun was out with just a few clouds. The petroglyphs were easy to find and didn’t have any recent additions.
Mike the ranger at the store was telling me that they are trying to get a grant so they can fence in a section of the park to keep a few Buffalo’s in. Years ago a nearby rancher kept Buffalo and it became a symbol of the park. It’s even on the park logo. He was also telling me that the new park manager wants to plan a couple of hundred trees around the lake to help with erosion control, day hiking and fishing.
And the big news is that to help increase tourism to the lake they are planning on taking tours to the petroglyphs on the far side of the lake next year. They are planning on making an “official” trail and they are going to be using the FS pontoon boat to make trips 1 or 2 time a day.
I think Mike was glad to have someone to talk.

The museum is under renovation for the next couple of weeks and they are waving the entrance fee during that time. They are also doing some work on the Big House but the Ranger didn't know exactly what they were doing. Re-stabilization of the foundation, he thinks.

This is a great morning hike. Lots of big trees and an easy trail. John at the fire tower will talk your ear off if you let him.

It’s a shame about the fire in 2011 but to be honest. The colors of the trees (yellow/orange and offset by the black) is very alluring. It’s almost like the paintings of the aspens with the horse and Indians hiding in them. This is another hike I’m going to have to come back and do again and again.

Another great hike. Meeting Dennis and his 18 year old Scotch whisky at the top was unexpected and the fact that he shared made him a true “Man’s” trail angle.

I had forgotten how many switchbacks there are after you leave Josephine saddle. But it was still a great hike. Met Tough_Boots and Lily at the top. That’s a happy dog.
