This trip served multiple purposes: training for an upcoming marathon AND my celebratory b-day hike. We saw very few people probably because of the rain yesterday and today. The people we did see had children and dogs and were happily enjoying themselves. It sprinkled on us off and on, was a chilly 53 degrees (F). Even cooler if any of your clothing got wet. The trail was soft and sticky with few puddles. I was trail running some portions and was not worried the least bit about slipping. This trail is a great one for beginner backpackers. Some folks have probably already tried this as I saw a handful of fire rings in flat, camp-ish areas.

Cottonwoods are a light green and yellow, Sycamores still have a decent light, green canopy.

Did Tom's Thumb Trail up to the base of the thumb, then back to the car, which is a nice 4.4 miles round trip, but I needed to complete 6.2 miles (10K), so I tacked on a little bit of Feldspar Trail, the equestrian trail, and Marcus Landslide Trail. I parked at 6:45am just as the lightning and rain were ending. There were no other cars in the parking lot!! I had the area all to myself for about an hour. It was so glorious with the fresh rain, chirping birds, moving clouds. I even saw a Desert Grassland Whiptail (Aspidoscelis uniparens) trying to warm up in the middle of the trail. Typically they are wicked fast, but this little one was cold and slow enough that I was able to catch it. The trail was eroded and washed out in a lot of the switchbacks section. Volunteers put in sooo much hard work to maintain the trail for our enjoyment and use. Don't forget to thank them when you see them!

Beautiful trek with the doggo. We were alone the majority of the time! I wanted the San Francisco Peaks experience without the major crowds and exposed roots on Humphrey's Trail. Didn't see any bears, cougars, or snakes. Plenty of squirrel and bird sightings!

Autumn Foliage Observation Isolated
Mostly green with hints of light green and yellow. Isolated groupings of full golden aspens at higher elevations closer to 10,000+. Yellow leaves already carpeting the trail. It's only going to get prettier throughout October!

Very light. Few lupines, even fewer paintbrush.

Started at the Cinchhook Trailhead (north) and hiked south with my pooch. We turned around at the bridge, which is 3.7 miles descent one-way, making this trek a total of 7.4 miles. We saw 2 other people, no animals, tons of birds, plenty of water, and plenty of butterflies. One even landed on me to get some salt off my skin. The north 1.5-mile segment of the trail is very overgrown, rocky, and full of loose rock. Wear sturdy shoes and pants that are resistant to stickers and snags. We didn't see any snakes, but be very mindful of your step. We did see plenty of lizards and some spiders scurrying as we brushed up against the overgrown shrubs.

Green for the most part. Some of the sycamores and cottonwoods are dropping crunchy, brown leaves.
