We have been doing this hike for a few years now, only in the opposite direction.
The last time through we went down into La Barge Creek just off of the lake. We made a wrong turn and ended up west of the Indian Paint Mine, we were already over in Boulder Canyon which worked out fine. I'd recommend a beverage of choice waiting in the car and a trip to Elvira's in Apache Junction to finish the day.

The description hits it perfectly. It's a great hike close to Phoenix. We hiked up to the pools just past the big crested saguaro. If you pay attention you will see another crested specimen up the hill on your right about half a mile before the big one. Also if you notice, the saguaros only grow on the southwest facing hillsides. This turned out to be an easy, relaxing Sunday afternoon hike. We saw a few backpackers coming out, and I just suppose there are some fine spots to do an easy overnighter on.

I thought that this hike just couldn't get any better until I read Fritzki's description.
'Thoroughly Therapeutic' sums it up completely. Fritzski, Rusty, Hooli and I joined up to encounter this hike. We went on a Thursday and it seemed as though there were quite a few other people with the same idea. I think I could account for at least thirty people in this 'remote area' that day. I can't say that I blame them for coming at all. Since I was a boy, I have always thought about doing something like Elisha Reavis did, and if I were going to pick a spot to live out in the Superstitions, the Reavis Ranch area would be it. This place is gorgeous; I can't wait to see what it's like when it's a bit warmer.

Along the way you can see many trees showing damage from the Iron Mountain burn in 1966. Some of the trees look like they were burnt yesterday. We put out someone's smoldering campfire on the way back, fire seems to be the big enemy out there, please be careful and don't ruin any more of it with fire. The tall grass you see in these areas is known as lovegrass. The Forest Service planted it after the fire to help prevent erosion. We saw at least six deer and some bear scat so keep your eyes open for wildlife.

At the ranch site you can find many artifacts of a lifestyle gone years ago, please leave things as you find them for others to enjoy. The orchard there is in total disrepair, the trees have been neglected and show signs of drought stress. I believe the orchards could be made productive again with proper care. Anyone happen to know the varieties of apples planted out there?

The four of us saw quite a bit out there that hasn't been discussed here at all. I'll definitely be back to stay a bit longer and check things out again. - GTG

I hiked up to the pools again from the beginning of La Barge creek today. I took a group of people I never figured would enjoy walking the entire way in the creek bed. I told them it was rough and it wasn't like anything we had hiked in previously together, they said they wanted to so we did. THEY LOVED IT. It wasn't what they expected, but we all had a great time. We returned via Boulder Canyon Trail just like I did on 01/25/02.

When I was at the pools before, I never saw Fritzski's fish, today I did. There are numerous small minnows in the pools. When I first arrived at the pools two days ago, I saw a very odd bird fly out of there. Then as I looked for a good spot to eat, I saw what looked like bird poop with small fish bones in it. Minutes later the odd bird was back. He flew around the corner from me, I ran around to see where he landed, because he looked like he was coming down. I didn't see him again. I noticed he had a large bill though. Today he came back, same routine, but as I ran around the corner asking where he went, he came right back past us all again and I got a good look. I'm pretty sure he was a Belted Kingfisher. I have only seen one other, and he was at a park here in Phoenix. If you were to sit quietly in the bushes, I bet you could see it come down for some easy minnows.

01/25/02 I hiked up to the pools in La Barge Box today. I started in La Barge Creek where it meets Canyon Lake. This part of the creek is narrower and more choked with reeds and cottonwoods than the area south of the Boulder Trail crossing up to the pools. About 45 minutes into La Barge Creek, keep you eyes open for a large bird nest up on the east side of the canyon about 50 feet up. You can't see the nest because of the rocks, but you wont miss the pile of bird poop 15 feet long and six inches deep. That nest has to have been there for years. About 45 minutes past the Boulder Canyon Trail crossing, there is a small cave with one piece of interesting graffiti above the entrance. It looks Spanish, but I doubt it is that old. There looks to be an old mine at the south end of Geronimo Head. The tailings are very visible, but I didn't have time to check the mine out, maybe next trip in. From the Canyon Lake Trailhead, down to La Barge Creek, down to the pools in the box took me 3 hours. This includes dilly-dallying with a new camera, studying large piles of bird poop and enjoying the scenery.

We hiked this trail on July 21st, 2001. It great day for it, the temperature was in the low 90's. Taking the trail up to Fossil Springs is a great place to head on a summer day. There is a rope swing and a nice set of pools to cool off in. Without exploring extensively I found at least seven or eight spring outlets on the creek. The flume is a very interesting feature to marvel and discuss on the way. I would suggest you stay off the flume, but I would recommend dipping your hat or shirt in it for a great cool-off on the way. Apparently Fossil Springs is Boy Scout Mecca around here. We saw at least three separate troops on our visit, and I personally know a troop leader that brings his group as well. One of the troops we saw were earning their chain-link fence scaling merit badges that day. There was also a brown AZ Government licensed pickup truck that had brought in about twelve to fifteen people for the afternoon. A friend of mine had recommended this hike because it was one of her favorites, and I can see why. The environment at the springs is beautiful, It's on my list of favorites now.
