My original intention for this route was to hike from camp, through "Hells Gate" then swing back east and head to the summit. Unfortunately we got stopped about 100 yds from the Gate, and was informed that we were on private property and were forced to turn around and head back int eh general direct in which we cam from. I got home and investigated the property boundaries and yes, we did indeed cross over to private property. It may be posted coming from the road but it was now from where we came from. Anyhow, we made for the summit. My daughter was excited to find the cache at the top. It was a good hike. Lots of cows, and rabbits.

Spent a nice weekend camped out in Cedar Basin near the Hell Canyon TH. Both Mornings were SUPER cold with a heavy dew that froze over by morning. We actually hike the loop starting at the Hell Canyon TH heading towards the canyon. After exploring the canyon, which was absolutely beautiful, we back tracked and started heading towards Horse creek. We made our way out of the canyon finally intersecting the road at the first horse creek TH. We then headed back north towards Hell Canyon TH and then to camp. It ended up being a six mile loop...

over all REALLY enjoyed this loop. it would actually make a really nice, but short overnight. lots of nice spots for back country camping.

This was a GREAT loop! I planed this hike based on water availability and it worked out rather nicely.....

I am seriously falling in love with this state and these mountains....

dripping springs area was very pretty and camping along the cotton woods was a nice touch.

the hike up Red tanks Canyon was great and spent a solid hour at the summit just taking it all in......

La Barge Box was breathtaking and camping midway through provided for a very nice sunset....

The view at the top of whisky springs and miners was definitely unexpected....WOW!! on the wat day started running into the day hiking crowds but was still pleasant....

My family and I spent three days, two nights in the canyon. It was me, my wife, my daughter, and our dog. Spent one day day hiking in, the next day did a dayhike for water, and hiked back out the third day. The canyon is rugged and gorgeous. Stayed at a nice campsite just past the ruins....

dry dry dry....found two sources of water which was basically two stagnant pools of water...one had a dead horse in it!!!!!glad ours was up "stream".....

nice hike, would definitely do again. Started on the Derrick Trail. Despite beautiful weather and an absolutely packed trail head we didnt see a single person until we made it to the Horton creek trail...after that it was pretty busy with people.
