Nice hike. Great wildflowers in the first 1/2 mile or so. The turn for the saddle is well before the marked route (500 ft?). We found a nice trail starting at a “waterfall” stone structure in the wash. Look for a cairn way hikers left. Nice arch and beautiful views from the saddle.

This hike is a more direct route to the Pass Mountain summit than the Wind Cave trail route. It starts just south of the off road vehicle access on Usery Mt Rd. If you are driving north on Usery Mt Rd, it is the first pull off on the right after the shooting range. If you are headed south from Bush Hwy, it’s on the left after passing the off-road vehicle parking.

The hike itself starts up a wash and mostly parallels the Usery Mt Park fence. It ultimately crosses the Pass Mt trail, at which point it steepens considerably. Follow this trail up to the beginning of the tuft band that Pass Mt is known for. At this point turn left where the trail forks and keep heading up to the band. When you reach it, you will need to climb 4-5 feet up the face to find the trail again. From here the trail goes right. Follow that to a false summit and keep going to the actual top that is covered in bird poo. Shortly before you reach the summit, the ridgeline trail continues to the left.

The gps trace is from the summit down to the parking area.

A nice hike though a little longer than advertised. We came in just under 8 miles on route scout and 7.75 on a Garmin watch. No detours except for a trip to the top of the oven.

The oven has a large limestone arrow on the ground to keep you from walking past it. And good thing, I might have even though I was looking for it.

As for the hike, 2/3rds of it are in “beach sand” washes. Quite the leg workout. The ridge line was spectacular and the hike back from water users to blue point was interesting. I never realized it was there in many trips down Bush hwy on bike and in cars.

Thanks AZLOT69 for posting this hike. It's a fun loop close to home, we'll be back to hike it again. Saw no one on trail on a Saturday morning and enjoyed the solitude.

We parked in Water Users (good option if you have a National Parks pass) and walked up the road with an endless parade of cars at our back. On our return we discovered a trail through the riparian area that avoids the highway. I think others mention this in their triplogs but it would be nice to update the hike description. Here's how to avoid the road:

Park in the upper (eastern) lot and head east past the toilets. You will pass an old faded green Caution sign, proceed past that and follow the trail down into the riparian area. Continue east and you'll find the huge culverts described in the hike log. At this point, head left through the culverts to do a clockwise loop or continue straight to follow the counter-clockwise directions.

Thanks again, this was a very nice hike.
