Good to be back on Reynolds, and we worked it high enough that we'll be able to go in from Murphy's next time.

The flora and fauna are coming out!

From the Reynolds Creek Trail, we finished Center Mountain to the turnaround stump on the ridgeline. More snow than we expected, and water was gushing everywhere. Really nice if you like a wet, slushy, adverse hike.

We are pushing higher up on Center Mountain. Looking forward to finishing up on the Reynolds Creek side and then pushing up on the Lucky Strike side. But next week we'll be looking at some other things in the Ancha.

There was still some snow on the ground, so instead of working up Reynolds Creek, we continued our work on the lower Center Mountain bifurcation to the junction with the upper fork, then worked that section back to Reynolds where we found one freshly downed tree to remove.

We were both surprised to get as much done as we did all things considered!

It snowed again last weekend, so after I took a tumble before the Wilderness boundary and Jim took another tumble up past the boundary, we changed our plans for work on Reynolds and did more work on the Center Mountain (which really needed the work!).

More snow than we expected slowed our progress on Reynolds, so we backtracked and cleared up a nasty cluster of downfall on the Center Mtn. Trail's lower bifurcation.

We cleared Reynolds from the lower trailhead to the Wilderness boundary. It didn't seem as burnt as Parker, and our work from last spring seemed to hold up pretty well. Also, it looked like the hotshots may have done some work on the trail.

We cleared the trail to the rockfall, except for one tree we'll get next time. It rained since Tuesday, so who knows what may have blown down along the way since then?

From the hwy 288 overlook we continued clearing the trail a few turns and switchbacks up to the stretch that leads to the talus slope crossing. We were slowed down by a couple of real tough trees!

[ youtube video ]

NOTE: Hwy 288 will be closed next Tues-Thurs to repair the washout and install culverts. For us, that means no trip up there.

Cleared the trail from the first switchback to the cascades. U.S. 60 was washed from the storm that day, so we had to take the long trek through Winkelman to get there. We came home via the Beeline Highway. Beautiful weather up there with Parker flowing nicely.

This was our first Sierra Ancha hike since July 17 when the Billy Fire was starting. Lots of burnt out moonscape and blowdowns as a result of the fire and storms. Unofficially, we had to clear away some of those blowdowns to get ourselves as far as the first switchback where we turned around. It was a little warm, and we both got tired of clearing all the fire aftermath. All in all, pretty fun hike. : wink :

We planned on going to Reynolds Creek, but FR 410 was blocked off with firemen running around, so we turned around and drove back down to Parker, which never fails to deliver blown down trees. Sure enough, we found work to do! It was warmer, starting at the lower trailhead (5,050 ft), but as we reached higher elevations, shade and occasional clouds kept the heat at bay. I noticed a wave of heat on an exposed uphill climb before reaching the big rockfall and checked my thermometer to see it was over 90 degrees. Not liking the heat much, I turned around, and we made it back earlier than usual. We made good progress nonetheless.

We hiked down the Moody Point trail to the Rim Trail. Moody Point was in pretty good shape from our work last year, and we had fun hiking through some 6-foot high ferns in places. Our main event was clearing a log that we left on the Rim Trail the last time we were down that way. There was a meander around it, but we cleared the log to fix that. It got a little warm with temps reaching the 80s, but it wasn't that bad at all with some shade and breeze. Any monsoon clouds were to the east over in New Mexico. Looking forward to them getting here.

We hiked down the Murphy Trail #141 to the Rim Trail. Our work on Murphy last year held up well so on the way down we trimmed back the thickets minimally and headed north at the Rim Trail junction where we removed several larger trees between the junction and Cold Spring Canyon. Nice day with the temps in the low 70s.
