Did this from Fossil Springs Road to the Native American ruins with Greg O., Eugene (a new friend!) and Buddy the VLD (Very Large Dog--Greg always takes a VLD along, even if he has to borrow one, as he did this time). The first couple of miles - until the 2nd stock pond (marked Towel Tank on some maps) and its associated corral - is an old 4WD road, so the hiking is easy. Once you pass the through the two gates there, however, the 4WD road soon ends and the true trail begins dropping down to your right (the 4WD goes uphill to your left). The trail is not the greatest: rocky, ravined in places, and indistinct to non-existent in others. Once we got to the creek (which had a trickle of water with small pools), we lost it entirely for a while, and boulder-hopped down the creek until we found it again. But it quickly deteriorated to merely cairns w/ no discernable track. And as others have noted, the grass was high and thick enough that you often couldn't see the rocks you were stepping on, which also slowed us. By the time we got to a flat area directly across from the ruins, we realized that we would run out of daylight before getting to the river, which was our original destination. Perhaps in late February, with more daylight, it would be doable. Definite GPS/map/compass and route finding country. Despite the fact that it was recently burned over, it is still beautiful high chaparral/juniper/pinion mountain/cliff country w/ great views.

Mike and I hiked this Dec. 2-3 2006, starting on the JF trail. It is beautiful all the way. There is quite a bit of catclaw; don't wear shorts!.

On the HB trail, there are 2 tricky spots. First, the trail crosses Tortilla Creek for the final time at the spot where Tortilla Creek, Cedar Basin creek, and an unnamed tributary on the SW all come together at the base of a hill. The trail crosses the first two, then turns left (SW) and heads up the unnamed tributary for about 30 yds., to where a drainage comes in from the right (W). Head up this drainage for a few feet and you will see the trail taking off to the right. The second tricky part is where the trail crosses the mouth of Trap Canyon; game trails obscure the route. The trail is east of the entrance to the canyon. There is a tributary of Trap Canyon (unclear on the topo but very clear on the ground) which approaches the canyon entrance from the east and joins the main creek just as the Canyon starts. If you lose the trail, get up on the south bank of this tributary and walk up and down it a little bit, and you will see the trail heading off towards the poorly defined saddle at the foot of Herman Mountain.

On the Peters Trail, remember that it does NOT go by Charlebois Spring, despite what the USGS map shows. It leaves the Dutchman Trail way above the spring, and stays there. However, the trail does go right by LaBarge Spring. On the Peters Trail, you will come to some false saddles as you make your way up the side of Charlebois Canyon; if lose your way, go right at the first two. When you reach the ridge that separates Charlebois and Music Canyon, the trail swings to your left; if you can't find it, the trail swings around the S and then W sides of peak 3200 as it heads up a tributary of Music Canyon, so if you head that way you will see it as it becomes distinct again. There is a strange wall stretching across this tributary; perhaps someone can explain it. You have to watch for cairns on top of Peters Mesa, as the trail is sometimes indistinct; we put up some additional cairns.

Water report: Charlebois and LaBarge were flowing fine. There were small pools in Upper LaBarge Box near the W end. There was one small pool in Kane Spring Canyon; we did not find the spring. Hikers we met told us that they had just seen water at dripping springs and the red tanks.

Hiked it last week. Hauled water down the Bill Hall. When I got to the Esplanade, some old timers were camped at the overhang, and told me that there was water in the tributary of Deer Creek just below us. They told me there was usually also water in some potholes above the overhang. A brief scramble into the ravine revealed they were right. There was a pool maybe 5 foot across and maybe 3 feet deep at one end. This was in late Oct. of a drought year. So my guess is that if you want to risk it, and you go at the right time of year, you can probably pretty well count on some water in the Esplanade, and dispense with hauling water there. That's what I will do next time.
