I took the alternate Cottonwood trail 247A . After about a mile on this trail there is a small cairn with a stick pointing left. I guess this can be called alternate Cottonwood trail #2 247B? It traverses a small ridge and intersects Cottonwood just below 3000'. This route saves a mile or probably more to this point along cottonwood. Lots of glyphs after this point all the way to the mesa. Didn't go across the Mesa to the ruins/fort but I did wander around the southern and western edges a bit and saw a few things ;)
