With a full day available, we hiked at a leisurely pace up to Josephine Saddle, then continued around to the south side of Mount Wrightson after a relaxing break. When we got into the sun, my hiking partners broke out their parasols and we continued on to Riley Saddle, where parasols were replaced by trekking poles for the bushwhack (essentially) out to our goal, Josephine Peak.
Along Jo's northwest ridge, we made our way through heavy brush and a section of new growth head high pine trees, spotting a few cairns and bits of old trail along the way before reaching a rocky little clearing at the base of the final ascent. My inclination here was to scramble up the north side and be done with it, but sirena had a route in her GPSr which showed the old trail ascending the northeast ridge, so we worked our way around (more old tread in spots) and were rewarded by finding the cairned switchbacking trail up that ridge more or less intact.
Having reached the summit, we dropped our packs, enjoyed lunch, beverages and the views and took lots of pictures while discussing various points of interest off in the distance. Refreshed, we went back down the way we came, and once we were back on the Super the pace picked up quite a bit as it was good to be back on trail. At Josephine Saddle we checked the time and decided we were good to go for the longer descent down the Super/Roger's Rock/ Pipeline route, which I had heard of but wouldn't have known to take without cindyl leading the way. As someone else said, I'm not sure I'd ever go down the Baldy again, with such a pleasant and uncrowded alternative available. |
