Re: Superstitions 3-4 day trip

We'll be meeting on Sunday morning and hiking through Tuesday or Wednesday. If you're looking for a weekend hike you could check out the hiking partners forum - there's a post up about a 20 mile 2-day trip for the 8th and 9th in the Superstitions that covers some of the same ground as suggested in t...

Re: Superstitions 3-4 day trip

We've both hiked this road multiple times before, so I don't think getting lost will be an issue. Some of my favorite places in the Superstitions.... Terrapin Pass Red Tanks (I like the fun side canyons with springs and turtles) Can't remember the name of this one, but we hiked a nice narrow canyon ...

Re: Superstitions 3-4 day trip

Hmm, I like the concept of this route. However, a friend of mine will be accompanying me for the first day and then will hike back out the following morning while I continue on. While pleasant enough, that 3 mile road hike certainly isn't the best the Sups has to offer, and I wouldn't want her to ha...

low carb camping meals

Ugh. So, I am officially "pre-diabetic" these days. I'm looking for low glycemic index options for car camping (not such a concern) and especially backpacking. And with the extra energy expenditure from backpacking, does anyone know how much I have to worry about this?? I.e., is it ok for ...

Re: upping the ante - 6 week backpack!

Just wanted to get back to everyone with an update, although the update is..... We're lame!!! Well, not lame, but we decided we could afford an international trip and ended up volunteering in Patagonia for a month. Did a little bit of traveling, but no long-distance backpacking. Thanks for all the g...

Superstitions 3-4 day trip

Hello all, I'm looking for a 3-4 day trip in the Superstitions for the second weekend in March. I'm hoping to see some great wildflowers - anyone have any reports? I've actually done quite a bit of hiking in the Sups (and love them!), but this is the first time I'm the trip planner. So here's what I...

Coyote Gulch flood 9/23

Was anyone in or near Coyote Gulch this past weekend? We are supposed to sample aquatic insects there later this week, but there was a large spike flow on the Escalante River and part of the Hole in the Rock road washed out. I would be interested in hearing what the flood situation was like in Coyot...

Re: Newbies in the Sedona area

I would agree that West Fork and Pumphouse are fantastic hikes. Be advised that Boynton Canyon spends about a mile passing next to an upscale resort complete with golf course. It drives me crazy, so I don't hike it anymore, but the canyon really is lovely once you get past the mess at the beginning....

Re: upping the ante - 6 week backpack!

I'm not the kind of person who needs to "start at the start and end at the end" - although my husband is! At any rate, what I'm trying to say is that, any particular stretch of trail would be fine with me, and choosing the most scenic, yet still passable, section of the PCT or GET would be...

Re: upping the ante - 6 week backpack!

Thanks for the info on the PCT stretch in winter. We do own snowshoes, so maybe we'll just increase the adventure factor. As for the Grand Canyon, since we live so close I'd rather go farther afield. I'm also more interested in the idea of a sustained long distance trip, since I've never done one be...

Re: upping the ante - 6 week backpack!

I actually stumbled on to the GET website this weekend and loved what I saw. It looks like there would be significant mountain travel though - not sure how well it would work in late winter, but depending on the weather if we start in Albuquerque and head toward Phoenix, we may be able to miss most ...

Re: upping the ante - 6 week backpack!

Thanks for the replies. We had tossed about the idea of the Arizona Trail, but were concerned about how much high elevation stuff there is down south as well as up north. I guess I would have the same concern about the PCT through the Southern California - I know it goes into some desert mountain ar...

Re: Need some info on Hells Gate Wilderness

Hey, I see you already gave up on this trip for this year, which is a good idea in my opinion. There are some very narrow sections, and I would NOT want to be anywhere near the canyon during the monsoon. For your future planning, some friends and I did this trip in 4 days a couple of years ago, and ...

upping the ante - 6 week backpack!

Inspired by mg's 100 miler below, my husband and I are looking for a good 6 week trip. The catch - has to be in January and February. The budget - $1000 or so for all costs excluding gear. I'm stumped. I'd guess we are looking for a 500 mile plus route. Some snow camping is ok, but certainly not pre...

Kanab Creek, Apr 30 - May 4

Hi all, I am looking for a volunteer to accompany me on a hike in the Grand Canyon from April 30 – May 4. We will drive from Flagstaff to the North Rim and hike into the upper section of Kanab Creek within the park. For the next three days, we will explore the canyon to determine the extent of ripar...

Nogales hiking

Hey all, My sister is unexpectedly going to Nogales for the weekend (July 22-23). I'm going to drive down from Flagstaff to meet up with her. Are there any potential hikes in the area this time of year? Sycamore Canyon sounds good (water sounds great!) but was still not recommended in the summer. We...

Abineau/Bear Jaw had an avalanche two winters ago and is still pretty messy. Most backpacks in the Flagstaff area require you to carry all your water. Living in Flag, I generally just dayhike here and for quick overnighters go down to the Sedona area - but it's a bit hot down there now.

Just got back from Havasu Canyon. I don't know what the situation is like in June, but this weekend (May 14) there were cars parked literally half a mile from the trailhead. The parking lot itself was entirely full. I think it would be easier just to park at the caverns. There is always someone in t...

Thanks for the info. I called the kanab ranger station and one of the rangers had been through last week. He encountered some waist deep pools and said the longest wade was about 30 feet. Most of the pools can be avoided, but some stretch wall to wall. We've been getting a bit of rain here in Flagst...
