Prime time Canyoneering!

Post by joebartels »

Just a friendly little reminder here to those that enjoy really cool stuff.

Devil's Canyon is just about prime season from now until late June. You might be naming your first born Tyler, Poncho or even Fritzski after this doosey :o

Upper Woods Canyon is prime season throughout June! (My personal ALL time favorite!)

Lizard keys up the ultimate multiday trip
Wet Beaver Canyon Loop

Hiking a mountain is cool, hiking the Superstition Ridgeline is awesome, the Grand Canyon is "grand"...
but the trips above will leave you thinking LIFE IS SO FRICKEN AWESOME for WEEKS on end!
I highly recommend! :)

Joe,

Devil's Canyon looks like a awesome hike...would love to try that but have no rappeling experience. Is there anyone out there that would be interested in taking some people on a hike to Devil's Canyon and provide a "class" on rappeling? Or where could one learn that type of skill? Look forward to some feedback.

BYW Joe...outstanding website!

Joe,

Looks like we might have enough folks interested for a full blown class on rappelling. Any tips, ideas on when and where this could happen? Or who may offer such instruction?

Hey, this could turn out to be an added feature to the wesite..:)

A friend of mine belongs to the Arizona Mountaineering Club (http://www.azmountaineeringclub.org/). They have all sorts of classes and most of them are free (I think if you're a member). Anyone here a member?

Count me in for Devil's Canyon!

Not really free to members:
http://www.azmountaineeringclub.org/main/classes_b.html
Members who have attended the class or have equivalent experience
are encouraged to help out at the classes as junior instructors, so you
could hear the lectures for the price of membership.
Student: "Am I doing this right ?"

I so want to go on a trip to Devil's Canyon, that write up you did, with the pictures of your trip were breath-taking Joe. I did rappelling in the service a couple time during basic training, but I wouldn't mind taking a course to learn how to do it for myself.

I just did the AMC's Basic class, Anchors class last fall, then last month I did their Crevasse rescue class. This club's instructors and trip leaders are superb! Their number one goal in each class has been teaching safety and proper techniques. Their instructors/leaders have been in the climbing community for decades and are very experienced (some with trips around the world). You have to pay for classes (even members) but keep in mind that the Basic class (most expensive) allows you to keep a bunch of gear that you'd otherwise buy anyways (about $50 worth). Besides, when learning a sport that can endanger your life if done improperly, are we going to pinch pennies? This group is fantastic!

I know it's last minute, but their monthly meeting is tonight at the Los Olivas center at roughly 28th st and Indian School. Check their website (link above) if interested, it'll give you a chance to see the group and what it's all about!

Too short of a notice for me but if any of you folks go can you give us an update or your thoughts on whether it would be something an inexperienced rapeller (like myself) would benefit from.

Thanks all,

M-

Hey Marty I'm pretty sure it's a good thing. I've never been and will likely never go but I've heard kudos galore about AMC for as long as I can remember.

...anyhow

Personally, I'm not rappelling anything, it's too scary
The two must rappelles are short. I'll just jump and bring a knotted rope for the return ascent.
It's sounds like the trip forming above may be a ways off. When it comes around I'd like to join if I have the day off or can wing it :)

:D In the mean time if anybody with a burley 4x4 is wanting to do Devil's Canyon this coming Thurs or Sat please PM me I'd like to tag along. Even more so if somebody is wanting to do Upper Woods Canyon on either of those days let me know. For Upper Woods I can drive. Both are strenuous treks to say the least. Upper Woods is toughest I've ever done. Keep in mind I'm thinking of a 4am start at the latest :o , I know that's early but it's necessary to be in&out safe and beat the heat of the day

Joe,

I guess what I would like is to do is Devil's Canyon with someone who has done it in the past such as yourself. Is this hike require much rappelling at all? I'm just going by the website pix and it seems like a great time. I can't make it this week-end as I have plans to hike up in Sedona...possibly Bear Mountain or Secret Canyon. Anyway, as far as the trip to Devil's Canyon, I have a 4X4 Chevy S-10...would that make to the trailhead? If so, I'd be willing to take some folks up there.

Let me know if there'd be anyone interested (if Joe volunteers to be the guide) :D. I have some people on my end that would like to try it too.

I am interested in going, heck Joe, I wouldn't mind going this weekend, but it is kind of short notice. Do you think a diesel 4x4 would make it all right? Got a jeep CJ7 also.

I went to the AMC meeting this evening, it was quite a drive for me, since I am in Mesa. I got to the meeting about 15 minutes late, and there was a slide show going on which was very nice, however it took up the whole meeting. Now I'm not the one to be outspoken, and I might be a little lacking when it comes to being assertive (at speaking, not hiking :-)), so I didn't speak to ANYONE, but I did pick up the monthly bulletin, and I will be looking that over. The group mentioned hikes outside of the state, I don't have the means to do trips like that at this time, but if I did want to go out of state for an adventure, it sure would be fun to go with a group of experienced hikers and climbers.

I keep seeing all these people asking if their four wheel drive vehicles can get down a road, and I hate to get off the subject but:

Your four wheel drive will go anywhere. Seriously anywhere (thats why so many people see them as such a problem). The only thing that limits four wheel drives are the drivers.

Sorry,
Back to the subject.

I too would love to go on a trip like this (especially if it meant I got to learn how to rappel). I am going on the hellsgate trip this weekend and so would not be able to attend but if you decide to do this trip another weekend I would be all for it.
