Tahoe Rim Trail (165 Mi) July 25, 2010

Post by Dirt4dinner »

Attention Hikers,
It is time to start searching the community. I am hell bent on doing the Tahoe Rim Trail next year, one year from NOW! If someone is interested in doing this, than let's talk. I am planning on 12-13 days on the trail. A couple days on either end for preparation/ acclimation and recovery, so probably 15-16 days total days gone from Phoenix. This is one of those threads that will die away, and then I will bring it back every once in awhile. I am looking for 1 or 2 people to do this with me.

For more info search Tahoe Rim Trail, there is an association website that can get you lots of info. I also have picked up the Tahoe Rim Trail Guide (BIG BOOK!) with tons of info and complete maps. But I will save that for the folks that want to talk seriously about this trip.

UPDATED INFORMATION:

Dates have been selected. I will be departing Phoenix on Thursday July 15th and driving to Sacramento (roughly 12 hours) and staying the night with family. The next morning July 16th, I will be picking up a friend at the Sacramento Airport and heading to Tahoe. The 16th and 17th will be spent placing our food caches along the trail, and acclimating. We hike on the 18th. We are planning 13 days, but it could be done in 12 or extend to 14. We could potentially be done in as few as 10 days....it's an adventure so no concrete timelines.

Its still on! I have a friend from Seattle commited and his wife might come too. I would love to have you join Alex, I am just worried about your time limitations and the possibility of snow.

We aren't set on the dates yet, I am thinking July...maybe around the 4th of July holiday to save us on days off. I thought you were going to be doing a summer job for the forest service or something?

You may have noticed that I have changed the title to reflect the dates choosen for this hike.

We will be departing Phoenix on Thursday July 22 and most likely returning Sunday August 8th.

I have one friend up in Seattle confirmed for this hike, hopefully Rally Toad will hop along as well.

UPDATED AGAIN! DATE CHANGE!

Hey Gang,
I have mapped out the proposed camping spots on Google Earth, as well as food cache locations and a couple necessary water stops. I will continue to add to this file and will probably break it into sub-folders by section (I have defined sections as the nights between food caches so there are 4 sections).

Here is the break out as it stands now. I would recommend grabbing the book Zach and I are using, if you wish to get better details. The book is "The Tahoe Rim Trail" by Tim Hauserman.

Thursday - July 15, 2010 - Tyler and other AZ hikers depart Phoenix and drive to Sacramento (12-13 hours).
Friday - July 16 - Pick up Zach at SAC airport and head for Tahoe, place food caches with any remaining time
Saturday - July 17 - Finish food caches, scout road crossings and relax!

Starting Point - Tahoe City - July 18, 2010

Section 1 - Tahoe City to Spooner Summit - 46.5 mi.
July 18 - Night 1 - Watson Lake - 13 mi.
July 19 - Night 2 - Gray Lake - 16.5 mi.
July 20 - Night 3 - Twin Lake - 17 mi.

Food Cache @ Spooner Summit and water stop at Spooner Lake (only water for a long ways)

Section 2 - Spooner Summit to Echo Lake - 52.4 mi.
July 21 - Night 4 - South Camp Peak - 19.6 mi.
July 22 - Night 5 - Star Lake - 15.8 mi.
July 23 - Night 6 - Round Lake - 17 mi.

Food Cache at Echo Summit

Section 3 - Echo Summit to Barker Meadows - 40 mi.
July 24 - Night 7 - Lake Aloha - 20 mi.
July 25 - Night 8 - Lake Aloha - 0 mi. (This is our off day, to explore and fish in the nearby lakes)
July 26 - Night 9 - Middle Velma Lake - 11.5 mi.
July 27 - Night 10 - Richardson Lake - 8.5 mi.

Food Cache at Barker Meadows

Section 4 - Barker Meadows to Tahoe City - 23.2 mi.
July 28 - Night 11 - Barker Meadows - 6.5 mi.
July 29 - Night 12 - Ward Creek - 11.5 mi. (or we could finish out and be having dinner in Tahoe city)
July 30 - Day 13 - 5.2 miles to Tahoe City and then drive to Family Cabin between Tahoe and SAC

July 31 - Spend the day at the cabin...order pizza!
August 1 - Drop Zach off at Airport and head back to Phoenix.

Man it's too bad I'm graduating about 2 months before that so I'm not too sure on what my plans will be after that. TBH though I've been thinking of taking a month or two off before actually looking for a job once I get out and doing a longer hike like this is something I've been really wanting to do. I'm not gonna lie though, if I committed to this I would have to bust my butt of training the next few months as I'm a bit outa shape from not hiking since last spring (most of my exercise has been upper body with the kayaking during the summer). Obviously I don't want to steal a spot from anybody though considering how late I'm showing my interest, but it's definitely something to think about and evaluate whether I will even have time to train for it.

Interested parties! Check out the attachment that I have created using google earth.

Just open it in Google Earth (which I assume you all have downloaded) and you can get a good look at points of interest along the hike, camp spots, water availability, food caches etc.
