Eight Foraging Bears Killed In Tahoe

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. -- The heavy snow and lingering winter conditions in the Sierra are forcing black bears into the valleys around Lake Tahoe, where an unusually large number of them have had to be put to death in recent weeks.

Nevada Department of Wildlife biologist Carl Lackey says officials already killed eight bears this spring, compared with a typical death toll of just one or two by this time.

"I attribute that to the late winter weather conditions," he said.

Unlocked food or trash lures the bears into trouble in cars and homes. Adding to the problem, Lackey said, is Washoe County has no ordinance requiring bear-proof trash receptacles.

Hot spots are centered near South Lake Tahoe, Tahoma and Highway 89 near the Squaw Valley and Alpine ski resorts.

Cristen Langner, a wildlife biologist for California Fish and Game, said the California side of the Tahoe basin has had three permitted bear deaths this year, which is not uncommon for this time. Each of the deaths was also a result of residents not locking up food trash or food, she said.

Langner echoed Lackey's words of caution and said residents should always be bear-aware and keep doors locked and food secure.

"The big thing is that every time these bears are successful (finding stored trash or food) it just reinforces that behavior," she said.

Ann Bryant, president of the Homewood-based BEAR League, said she's concerned about the death toll.

"I'm pretty shocked because it's only going to get worse as the season goes on," she said.

Bryant said based on calls, sightings and onsite observations, the BEAR League has observed more newborns this year than any other, as well as an increased number of sightings and conflicts.

Usually bears aren't spotted out of hibernation until May or June, Bryant said, but she's seen them as early as March and April this year.

Ice Water and Dawn dish soap would have helped, but most aren't going to carry dish soap on a day hike. The dish soap (don't scrub!) neutralizes the oil and the cold water relieves the hot pepper effect. Not an instant cure, you'll still feel the effects for awhile, but you can at least function.

Guy hunting in Alaska with his dad charged by a brown bear, they put it down with a barrage of shots and the guy put one round thru his leg when he fell back when the bear got on top of him. He survived. Apparent caliber involved a 10mm and his dad had a .40.

Two hunters who shot 530-pound grizzly 24 times share their stunning story of survival. On Sunday[9/1?], Hill and Meyers were archery hunting for elk in the Caribou-Targhee National Forest, west of Henrys Lake in Island Park.

This is in eastern Idaho, near the border with Wyoming / Yellowstone.

Teton NP celebrity bear, Grizzly 399, was killed last night after being struck by a vehicle.

Grizzly 399, the most famous bear in the world, died Tuesday night after being hit by a vehicle on Highway 26/89 in the Snake River Canyon .

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service announced that Grizzly Bear 399 was fatally struck by a car south of Jackson. The bear’s identity was confirmed through ear tags and a microchip.

Grizzly 399 was an estimated 28 years old, a truly advanced age for grizzlies, which almost never live to 30 in the wild.

Resulting in a snub nosed bear. I can just image a hillbilly hunter arguing with a game warden that its not a bear but a hairy boar.

I read a report a couple of days ago about a "problem" bear near Josephine Saddle in Madera Canyon. Below is a video that someone took.


It looks like this bear has lost its fear of humans and sadly it will likely have to be euthanized.

I was in Yellowstone two weeks ago, watching people run after a grizzly that was trying to escape up a mountain.. Maybe they should euthanize humans who have lost their fear of bears.

Ha! Just posted a comment telling Gummo to head there! I'm seeing many photos of a bear or two. Seems the drought might be making bears comfortable with humans.
