Habitat well-drained deserts & slopes. Flowers pink is the most common but can be pinkish purple (magenta, fuchsia). 3" in diameter. 2" - 3" long in a cup shape. close at night and reopen in morning. last up to 5 days. Green stigma in center. Description cactus. perennial. Clumping cylindrical columnar cactus, mostly erect light green stems, 6" - 14" tall, 2" - 4" diameter, branching freely from the base. Comments one of the most common species of hedgehog cactus in AZ. Still, there are a number of varieties of Echinocereus engelmannii, and some are quite rare. Fruit is edible.
