This is from the FDR Overlook not too far from Maria's house. Above King’s Gap is Dowdell’s Knob where President Franklin D. Roosevelt sometimes picnicked and pondered world affairs. Sit-next-to-a-President statues have become popular, but this is the only one that's historically accurate. Bronze FDR is portrayed sitting on an improvised couch (his removable car seat) at his favorite mountaintop picnic spot, which is exactly what he did when he came for picnics. His custom-built rock bar-b-que still stands, although it's been filled in with cement.
There is a hike at the park which explores Dowdell’s Knob, a high overlook on Pine Mountain that was once a favorite of the former President. The route combines the Pine Mountain Trail with the Boot Top Trail to explore some seriously stunning views, looping through a tornado-ravaged forest filled with moss and wildflowers, and visiting a small, trickling waterfall. With some of the best views in the park, Dowdell’s Knob Loop is an all-time favorite hike at FDR State Park south of Atlanta.
