After my time at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville and the photo workshop in the Great Smoky Mountains, I thot I might as well drop down to GA and visit my nearly life long friend in Pine Mountain. We met at the Biltmore Hotel back in 1981, where we both worked, and have been friends ever since. The evening before I was supposed to come down she texted to let me know she had been in a car accident and wouldn't be able to get me at Atlanta airport so I would have to rent a car or catch a shuttle.

Monday morning, when our group arrived at the Knoxville airport, I tried to figure out how to just fly home but those options were too expensive so I did end up going to Atlanta where I took the shuttle toward Columbus that has a stop at an interchange not too far from Pine Mountain. Well, like everything that happens around Maria, the first person she had lined up to come get me, their dog got bit by a snake so she had to find someone else at the last minute; otherwise, not too sure how long I would have been sitting at that gas station. And this was just the start of my hectic few days with Maria; since now we didn't even have transportation.

Tuesday morning we took the three dogs for a walk to a park up and over through the woods. She is very near FDR State Park. One of the prized dogs is a bit on the lazy side and the other was out of control spunky and my dog was just right :) . It's mostly a wooded area with trees. The park is nice with a huge plat of grass for the animals to play.

After getting home she was able to find us a ride to a home about 45 minutes south where we could borrow a car until Maria could get a rental. It was a fun stop to visit in the area of Cataula at a very cool Georgian home where we enjoyed bourbon mixed with ginger beer out on the porch.

Wednesday we took the dogs for a walk again but a little shorter as we had things to do. After that, we stopped by the FDR Overlook on our way to the FDR Little Whitehouse. It is a nice tour in this area and surprisingly, "Little" was just not what you would expect for a President of the USA. We later went to Columbus to get Maria a rental car. On the way back home, we stopped at Big Eddy's, a private country club on the Oliver Lake between GA and AL, where Maria is employed.

As usual, Maria's house is non-stop action between the two African Grey Parrots and the three dogs. Maria lived and worked in South Africa for several years, thus the African Greys. However, it's a beautiful location at the end of the road in the woods. We did have a nice Mexican meal in Pine Mountain at their local restaurant.

I took the shuttle to Atlanta, that airport is HUGE, and has a subway to get you to your terminal. The last time I was here, 2005, was also to see Maria in the Bahamas. The airport was so big, and because of the delayed flight out of Detroit, I missed my connecting flight as it was just too far to run with my luggage. I did get to the Bahamas but a day late.

For this flight, we came to Phx over the Rim so I got a couple pictures of Woods Canyon Lake, the Mazzies, Bartlett Lake and my hiking digs of North Mountain and Shaw Butte. Seemed a weird route coming from Atlanta.

Totals for both dog hikes: about 2 miles (high point 1090, low point 971). Total steps 5121 burning 353 calories. The first day the temp was 59 and 66% humidity finishing at 11:53AM, the second day the temp was 48 and 80% humidity finishing at 10:10AM.

I have videos I made from my time there but thot I'd just post the pictures of the dog walk hike, FDR stuff, the birds and the flight over AZ etc. However, you might like the video I made of the FDR Overlook and Little White House (which I knew nothing about): [ youtube video ]

For me, sometimes it's just as much about the journey as the destination.
Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.
