| no partners | | today was a day of firsts.. my first time hiking a trail in the McDowells, even though I've lived in Fountain Hills for almost 8 years now.. and, first time jogging/running a trail for more than 500 feet!
I started out around 9am and the spring weather was perfect, breezy and 70 degrees. I could tell this was going to be a great day - and I was not dissapointed.
After the first few minutes I stopped to repair a leaky water bladder, then I started to pick up the pace at this section of trail that remains relatively flat. Once I got onto the Sunrise trail proper, I saw only one biker and one hiker. I hiked up to the peak, and snapped a few photos just before decending to avoid more of the strong winds.
So, the second "first" was my trail run down the mountain. I havent run or jogged more than about 1/2 a mile in at least a decade. I was never much of a runner anyway, suffering slight asthma as a kid I would always feel the pain in P.E. and never placed well in races, despite my otherwise physical strength.
A couple of my friends have made comments in the past like "mike, you should enter some races, you have the stamina to be a runner" and "you can definately keep a fast pace, you squirrel"
So, today I felt the urge to just try it out for a while. It felt good. My lungs were happy. My legs and knees were in rythym. I got a nice pace going from the area where the horse tie pole sits and just kept going... no stops.
Now, Im no trail runner and I dunno if I could do this for 10 miles, but Im proud of myself for making it feel easy, and 2.25 miles aint bad for my fist time..
