I then walked along that going in and out of the forest until I hit 238A which I then walked along for some time. This led me down a nice drainage which has a lot of large old ponderosa pines and gambel oaks. It didn't feel like Arizona. A lot of the burn area really doesn't look that bad, and other than the new snags, it will hopefully end up having had the effect of thinning the forest. A lot of it does look really bad, and while I stopped where I could see everything turn black, I am sure there was a lot of it further south. In a few years it will probably be very similar to the top of Wilson Mountain with a lot of weeds and a sea of falling snags. I estimated my mileage and elevation using the traildex. BTW: Turkey Butte is a little basalt hill with a flow around it. So, the western part of the rim above Sedona has a basalt cap, too. |
