What a beautiful day to be out in the wilderness, high atop a mountain. My original intention was just to hike down the Wilderness of Rocks trail to the Lemmon Rock junction and then hike back. However, on the way in I ran into a group of Tucson Backpackers (meetup group), who introduced me to another couple who happened to be on the trail that were going to the Pools. Sweet serendipity! I had never been to the Pools, so I figured this was my shot. It was so lovely up there! Such a hidden treasure! It turned out that this couple wanted to stay at the pools longer than I had, so I thought I'd just head back the same way I came. Unfortunately, it wasn't quite that simple. I did eventually get back to the trail after about an hour and a half of wandering out amongst the wilderness of rocks. It was amazing! And a little unnerving, but since I could see Tucson, and I could see Mt. Bigelow, I figured I knew pretty much where I was and could find my way back somehow. I knew the trail was north of me somewhere (I did have a compass!) and I headed that direction and came upon a nice campsite in the woods, then I knew I was close. I was just about at the junction of Lemmon Rock trail. I then ran into the couple that I met going out to the pools, and we hiked back out fairly uneventfully.

Lesson learned: Do not hike off trail by yourself when you don't know EXACTLY where you're going! The couple had pointed out the easy landmarks when we made our way in, but after a while, all those rocks look the same...

Oh - forgot to mention - I broke in some new boots with this trek! So far so good - I like the Vasque boots.
